 Did you have the Arcane Knowledge perk? I NEVER GOT IT THAT OPTION.

I did, but I can't remember if that was a requirement. Pretty sure the magic nerdery was the flirt option (which explains right there why I love Solas's romance so much).

If you guys want to make a NSFW group, I wouldn't mind joining. I found the ball talk amusing honestly. Not so much the sex dolls, but I've been around the Internet a loooong time; I ceased being easily offended years and years ago. :P

I'm down for that! I just don't want newbies to pop in here and feel too weirded out or uncomfortable to post.

Speaking of the influence of religion and other real world philosophy on this game, I think it's clear that the game draws upon Abrahamic religions, Greek mythology, and Communism (the Qunari). Are there any other major belief systems that I missed? Sometimes I wonder what the game would look like if some of the races/characters are based on Asian belief systems such as Daoism and Buddhism. It would be so fun if my Lavellan could have said something like this in response to a question of how she plans to rule.

I have a secret longing for Dragon Age to crash into a rebooted Jade Empire.

I wonder if we're not reading too far into this Solas quote (then again, if we didn't make a habit of reading too far into things, this thread wouldn't be half as interesting...). But, in this case it could just be that Solas, with his unique ability to enter the Fade through dreaming, would in fact have more trouble if he practiced blood magic. There's a lot of evidence (largely anecdotal, mind, but it's referenced enough in the game and books that I think it's true in most cases) that the use of blood magic attracts the attention of demons. So, were a Somniari like Solas to practice it, he would have a harder time entering and navigating the Fade with all the pesky demons about going 'pick me! pick me! no? well, how 'bouts we fight dude!?' In his case it could simply be that the practice of blood magic would turn an enjoyable experience for him into an irritating or dangerous one.

Though I do wonder what it is exactly that attracts demons when blood magic is practiced. Why is it that areas that have seen a lot of death, where blood has been spilled, or blood magic practiced (like Kirkwall) draw spirits and demons the way they do. What is it about blood that weakens the veil? I know it ties into the whole three cups (blight/blood/Fade) theory, but... I don't know. I'm still not getting the the more practical 'why?'.

I think it might tie into spirits' essential desire to reconnect to the physical world.

We know that spirits are drawn to strong emotion (perhaps a form of Will, in concept) but there's nothing more definitively physical than blood.  As for why that weakens the veil, the analogy seems to be that in pressing against it trying to get through, spirits actually do make it thinner over time.  And since a thinner veil means easier/ more obvious access to the physical world... a cause-effect cycle begins to loop.

There's the Avaar religion. The game says that they believe there are gods in everything, so it's an animistic(sp?) religion, but I'm not sure what real world relgion it parallels, if any, since that's basically all the information I got from Scout Harding.

Actually, the Qun is basically militant, expansionist Buddhism. The whole "everyone has a place when they come into the world and must acknowledge their place to be truly happy" is very characteristic of Buddhist/Daoist traditions. Except unlike Buddhism, which largely preaches pacifism (though not always), the Qun does not shy away from conversion by force.

Has anybody done the Solas romance with the American accent? I don't think I've seen a single non-British Lavellan, haha.  I'm curious if it's good!

I love that the dragon age series is already a very complex game in terms of the philosophies that it mentions. It would be even cooler if they added in some other major belief systems aside from the western ones. I guess the Qun is based on communism, but eastern countries have way more material to pull from than just that. I guess the writers are either not familiar with these belief systems or they just don't want to make the game overly complex.

I'm no expert on eastern religions, but something makes me suspect Solas might appreciate The Middle Way.  =w=

This thread becomes super argumentative in the beat of one second.

All I want to see is cool Solas theories and pretty fan-art :c

Yes. We need some Solavellan comradery.

Clearly we need to change the topic to nsfw stuff. Hmm, Solas' body is so manly. Is it considered a swimmer's body?

I support this particular change of topic <3 hehehe.

Well, I don't know anything about the militant branch of Buddhism, but it is clearly not Daoism. Daoism is closer to Solas' beliefs in which people should be free to follow their nature.

Yeah, Solas' desire for freedom and so on touches on some daoist elements, but I think daoists are wayyy more lay back than he is. That's one of the main difference. They wouldn't advocate some sort of major rebellion or provoke some major crisis to achieve an environment in which people can be free to follow their nature.

Yeah. It's not an exact comparison, but it struck me how the Qun was similar in that following one's nature is paramount. Except rather than an individual meditating on their nature and relationship with the rest of creation, the Qun has created an entire infrastructure devoted to helping you realize what your nature is and then equipping you to follow it to the best of your ability.

Of course, "what your nature is" is not up to the individual, but to the Qun. And your nature cannot be denied, even if you think that it might be something different.

EDIT: Whoops, top of the page. Have some Solas dancing.

That's my problem with the call for censorship. Technically the forum rules are pretty strict, but it was fun when we can just talk about anything. Where should we draw the line anyway? Talking about Hades is ok, but Satan isn't? Talking about balls is ok, but sex dolls aren't? Not gonna lie. I miss the smut talk a bit. It was definitely wilder here even before the incident that started the argument about NSFW stuff making people uncomfortable.

I really hate poking this dead horse.  But no one was actually calling for the NSFW to stop.  Just to put it behind spoiler tags, and mark it NSFW.  Smut and balls etc do not bother me in the slightest.  But no one wants the thread shut down because of jokes about sex dolls and balls.  Smut talk all you want, just be mindful of the people that aren't here for it, or getting the thread locked.

Can we really stop bringing it up now?

But with the bug, it's not a full romance. He doesn't call you vhenan I think.

In the bug, Solas only called my Lavellan vhenan during his cutscenes--specifically the balcony and his final romance scene.  In his outside dialogue, he'll only call her lethallan and my friend.  There won't be any outside gossip about it, either.  So no, it isn't a full romance-just a bug/exploit.  The one exception is that she's still able to ask him about what happened after his romance scene and he'll become colder and stop calling her lethallan and call her Inquisitor instead.

The American voice seemed too deep for my Lavellan, but I mainly picked the British accent because I just like to hear British accents (I have an American accent myself). LOL.  How have you liked the American accent for the emotional scenes? I'm thinking of using that one if I ever get around to making a female qunari.

In an innocent way, of course.

I bet he's one of those people where you can do the annoying thing where you poke him to get his attention but he'd have a will of steel and never acknowledge you.

Right, but I think the bug part is the lethallan/my friend bit, particularly since you still get the vallaslin scene.

You know what I find both hilarious and sad about Solas's view on the Qun?  He's not that different from the qunari in his perspective on peoples' essential nature.

Saarebas, DA2: Existence is the only choice.  I can't choose to not be.

Solas, DA:I: We cannot change our nature by wishing.

EDIT: Just realized that in both quests, it falls to Varric to be the voice of change.  Maker bless you, Varric.
