I know this will sound weird but this is just a question about pure definition. I don't want to ask the Devs because I KNOW they will think I'm a weirdo. But I just want to know for the sake of knowing how sacrifice works.

 

Blood magic is done with blood. Can you do it with menstrual blood? I mean why not? Does it have to be taken violently? Cramps seem pretty violent. Plus there is some dissolved flesh in there so you get like extra sacrifice.

We-ell...Dorian says that you can perform blood magic by taking blood from yourself or a willing participant.  So violence is not necessary.  However, the more powerful spells require lives to be sacrificed.  I am not sure if this is due to the quantity of blood required, or the emotions evoked by the fear/suffering of the victims.  

 

Also, forget menstruation, I can't believe there aren't blood mages lined up every time a woman has a baby, to take advantage of a birth.  (Great image, right?  You're welcome.)

.......I....never thought about it before, but I don't see why it would matter. I don't remember them saying that the blood had to be taken violently in reference to blood magic, just that blood is needed, and I think it has to be from something still alive, like not from something already killed before the start of the ritual.

It seems like it's the sacrificial aspect of it, the letting of blood... The sacrifice of it's loss. Pain and suffering weaken the veil just as blood itself apparently does. I don't know. Menstrual blood is more... waste material, really. You wouldn't lose anything by using it. Plus, there's not very much actual blood in it, despite appearances. Lots of other stuff mixed in.

On a more serious note, I agree that the blood has to be fresh. Unless there was a way to use blood magic with random blood spatters (of which there are many everywhere), I personally can't recall there being such an incident in the Dragon Age games, I don't see menstrual blood as a valid option.

Sure, why not?  I'm pretty sure if I were a mage in Thedas, I'd want to do some blood magicking while on my period.

I really hate poking this dead horse.  But no one was actually calling for the NSFW to stop.  Just to put it behind spoiler tags, and mark it NSFW.  Smut and balls etc do not bother me in the slightest.  But no one wants the thread shut down because of jokes about sex dolls and balls.  Smut talk all you want, just be mindful of the people that aren't here for it, or getting the thread locked.

Wholesome topic: Solas telling stories to little Dalish kids  I'm kind of torn on how Solas would be around kids, like I think he'd be able to indulge their imaginations and have a lot of patience with them, but I also think he'd be a little annoyed if there were too crazy... what do you all think?

No sacrifice, since it's something you're losing anyway and essentially the opposite of life sustaining. Blood magic in DA seems to require some measure of sacrifice, violent or not.

And me being like "it's blood. There is flesh in there too. Bonus! It was going to be a baby if it was fertilized. You can't see it but the egg was in there. So i mean that counts too"

 

And the demon just leaves all grossed out.

He's a man who loves to teach, and loves imagination. He would like kids a lot. I'm not a huge fan of kids, but I can see a teacher inside Solas. 

 

He's a very patient man. Most of the time when he gets annoyed, he lets that anger go really quickly. (because he knows that anger, hate, greed, ext feed bad demons). He treasures curiosity, intellect, and wisdom. He would greatly enjoy being around kids who want to learn. And he would be okay around bratty kids because he would tell them scary stories to get them to behave.

 

The guy loves playing tricks and telling stories. Nap time would be like the magic school bus for him and any kids he was given to take care of.
