There are a bunch of those in the temple of Dirthamen as well, though I think we should probably take the positioning of art assets with a grain of salt.

Symbolism-wise, I never saw my Inquisitor as a Halla (too passive and innocent) but as a big badass stag. I loved that a mage lavellan's card had a stag on it. I get why people are complaining about the wolf/halla thing, and are looking for alternate animals, but stags ain't as passive as people think. They can be aggressive and seriously **** you up.

Ooooh, I agree on the symbolism. I think the wolf and halla thing is sweet in a way. The imagery kind of reminds me of the lion and the lamb. However a halla doesn't really fit my Inquisitor. She'd be more like something large and dangerous that thinks it's a halla if anything. I also see my Inquisitor as more of the moose deer elk mount (the Hart seriously looks like a combination of those things). 

 

But just look at her.

Remember this sidequest?  In retrospect, what this Brecilian Temple codex is describing looks kinda familiar.  This was also the only known (to me) description of an ancient elf with vallaslin before DA:I.

Halla are pretty badass, considering how they were war mounts for the elves and can gore people to death with their horns.  Any animal strong, smart, and steady enough to bear riders into the chaos and danger of battle is not f***ing around.  

 

Lavellan's resting pose (especially in the Skyhold jammies) reminds me rather forcefully of a bird, so that's what I always think of.

My personal answers are under spoiler tags for space saving If enough people reply with their own feedback I'll tally up the answers to see which choices won the popularity contest.

Yes, but only because I only wanted one female elf play through and I wanted to do all the romances now I'm obsessed with Solas.

6. What is your Lavellan's relationship with her clan?

They are a super close family! I head canon that her mom originally was the First but left to join another clan who was in dire need of a First. Her dad went with her mom, but she's close to her Keeper who is also her great aunt. She also has a best friend named Thalia, who is a hunter.

7. What are your Lavellan's religious views?

She's skeptical of any gods actually existing, but acts devoted because of her position as the Keeper's First.

8. Did your Lavellan drink from the Well?

Yes, (I hope that doesn't come back to bite her in the arse) honestly I wasn't going to make the choice for her to drink, but then I realized she'd probably be my only Inquisitor (stupid enough) willing to do it. So I just imagine she didn't trust Morrigan with the knowledge and owe of the Well.

9. Did your Lavellan have Solas remove the vallaslin and why/why not?

No, Ithilia is proud to have been raised Dalish and the vallaslin was part of her heritage. Plus, it looks cool.

10. What response did you choose after Solas broke up with you?

11. How is your Lavellan taking Solas being gone and how are you taking it?

She is furious that he left without saying goodbye and explaining himself. Also very sad, but she let's the anger cloud that.
I have built a shelter in the Solas thread and only venture out for the inconveniences of daily life.

12. What would you give for a Wolf Hunt DLC?

True! It's easy to forget that about the Halla. I really wish we'd gotten a Halla mount in Inquisition.

I romanced him because of that smile, laugh, the rhythm in his voice (i'm such a nerd), and that frackin' Fade dream! He made me abandon my Trevelyan because of it! No regrets, though.

 

A lot of people said the same thing about the Anders romance because he kept pushing you away, and I was just...ugh. Wat.

Speaking of the influence of religion and other real world philosophy on this game, I think it's clear that the game draws upon Abrahamic religions, Greek mythology, and Communism (the Qunari). Are there any other major belief systems that I missed? Sometimes I wonder what the game would look like if some of the races/characters are based on Asian belief systems such as Daoism and Buddhism. It would be so fun if my Lavellan could have said something like this in response to a question of how she plans to rule.

Ahem.

The Qunari are the unholy spawn of extremist Confucianism with some Buddhism thrown in. Geo-politically, they're the Islamic Caliphate that challenged the Byzantine Empire and Western Europe.

The Black/White Divine schism is a funnier version of the Catholic/Orthodox split. (Divine Joyous dies, the Vints declare a national holiday.  )

How the ancient Tevinter put a new spin and names, even co-opting specific constellations, on the elven gods (or so we theorize  ) parallels the Roman syncretism of the Hellenic mythologies.

Some of the Fen'harel stories remind me of Coyote and Loki, from Native American and Norse Mythology. One wonders if he ever got Elgar'nan in a dress to foil a dragon's plot to marry Mythal. 

Some of the failed Andrastian faiths, the ones that died out or were annihilated by the Orlesian Chantry, resemble some of the stranger and more radical Christian offshoots in the days before it became organized.

Wholesome topic: Solas telling stories to little Dalish kids

 

During the story Solas tells about the matchmaker spirit, I pictured him sitting in a chair by the fire with his daughter or granddaughter on his lap. I know you all have heard them already, but this one is at 0:35 here: https://www.youtube....h?v=wBVc8hjizVY

 

Ugh, thinking about Solas actually being happy or having children someday is a kinda painful because I'm terrified he's going to die horribly. If his death is inevitable (banal nadas!), do you guys think there might be an option for a romanced Lavellan to become the vessel for his soul or whatever essence remains? Flemeth says that Mythal is "a part of me, no more separate than your heart from your chest". Not exactly a happy ending, but they'd be together in some sense at least.

June.  Initially for cosmetic reasons, but it fits surprisingly well with her specialization and all the crafting I did.

Yes.  I tried to be good and keep an open mind, but that stupid laugh of his killed that resolution within the first hour.

She's very tight with her immediate family (parents, aunt, two cousins), but not so much with the rest of her clan.

She thinks there had to have been some truth to all the religions (the Maker, Andraste, the Stone, elven gods) but it's all been obscured by myth.

Nope.  She cares about knowledge, but the Well forced her to realize that she wasn't going to compromise her identity for it.

Clariel is devastated at first, then intensely focused on getting some of the answers that he denied her.  By leaving with little explanation, he pretty much guaranteed that she was going to chase after the truth.

June. No special reason, I just liked the designs. I do picture her as good with crafting and deft with her hands, though.

30 at the start of DAI.

 

5. Did you intend to romance Solas when you started the game?

Ohhhhh yes. I've been in this thread and on the Solas train for months. MONTHS. I remember back when we were all pessimistic and convinced that he wouldn't be a romance option!

 

6. What is your Lavellan's relationship with her clan?

A good one. They're her family and she's a type that thrives when she's surrounded by people she cares about. She was very lonely at first without them. She was also the Keeper's First so she had to be pretty involved. After the events of DAI it's unlikely that she'd ever return to them for good, though. Or that they'd even accept her back considering certain choices.

 

7. What are your Lavellan's religious views?

She believed in the elven gods at first. Now if you asked her, she'd tell you she just doesn't know what to believe anymore. She puts her focus on people and the here and now instead of gods by the end of DAI. 

 

8. Did your Lavellan drink from the Well?

No. Too much risk for a benefit that might not be there. She let Morrigan take the plunge. 

 

9. Did your Lavellan have Solas remove the vallaslin and why/why not?

Yes. I've gone into this before on this thread so I'll just quote it here with a couple things added. 

 

My Lavellan removes them but I play her as becoming detached from Dalish culture anyways. She wants to start fresh after everything that she learned and that happened during Inquisition. She doesn't feel like she can truly go back to her clan as a Dalish elf after everything, even before the whole vallaslin thing. She sees the elves as a whole differently now and feels they should be united more than ever. I already said a while ago that I see vallaslin as a symbol of the Dalish clinging to a past that wasn't as great as they believed and that they don't truly understand. It's time to move forward. Cari wants to look to the future and work with what the world is now because it has potential.

 

If Solas knew the real reason she gave up the vallaslin, he'd probably disapprove!  

 

10. What response did you choose after Solas broke up with you?

The one where she pleads with him not to leave. It suited her character best and it has my favorite Solas reaction. 

 

11. How is your Lavellan taking Solas being gone and how are you taking it?

She's upset but mostly she's worried about what Solas is up to. Because of the way he was talking when he broke up with her, what he says before he disappears and what he says through Cole, she fears what path he is forcing himself on because he believes he must. That concerns her more than the romance's end. She's too busy with the Inquisition and trying to put proverbial bandaids over the wounds still left all around Thedas to pine too much for lost love. She just tries not to think too hard about it and gather any little scraps of evidence as to his whereabouts that she can between her duties.

 

I'm taking it fine, myself! I just can't wait to see where they're going with this haha!

 

12. What would you give for a Wolf Hunt DLC?

My money. TAKE IT, BIOWARE.

Hello fellow Lavellan,

I've been stalking this forum for a little bit and I have to say, your art has been helping get through my Solas heartbreak! I first went to Tumblr(username SolaceinSolas) for my Solas therapy, and it has helped a ton(I actualy follow RenMiri1 on tumblr, or at least I assume because you have the some Lavellan on your icon XD), but you guys seem amazing too and you can never have enough Solas recovery therapy, am I right?!

I too, am part of the exclusive club of people(everyone else I know in person seems to have either gone after Cullen or Bull so they JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND THE PAIN) who went after the beautiful egg without having any idea the heart break that was to come. </3 He literally ruined me. After I finished the game I was super angry/confused/hurt for about an hour. After crying some angry tears and calming down, I stepped back and realized how he was so much more than I ever thought. I have gone through read and studied so many theories and elven lore now that I'm beginning to think I was born Dalish. XD

 I'm not very good at drawing digitally, but I may can contribute gifs/photomanipulation/amvs and I will be cosplaying Solas at DragonCon this year!


Anywho, this is just my awkward introduction. I just wanted to let you guys know that you are amazing and super talented and I look forward to contributing to the Solas love! 8D

I've never picked an actual age for her, but I wanna say... in her early 30s.

When I first started the game, no. When I created Ellana, yes.

They aren't extremely close, but she was one of the clan's best protectors and took that job seriously. EDIT: I should add that they aren't extremely close because Ellana has no immediate family. Her parents died during a hunt and she had no grandparents, aunts, uncles, or siblings.

7. What are your Lavellan's religious views?

She's more of a "go to church because it makes your family happy" type of person. She thinks the gods existed at one point, but realizes that they sure as heck aren't there now, and she sees no reason to be devout towards absentee gods.

No, because she didn't think she was knowledgeable enough to handle it, and also because she's never agreed with keeping knowledge to yourself. SHARE THE KNOWLEDGE.

Yes, because she always felt a little trapped by it, and finding out that the vallaslin was actually slave markings at one time kind of horrified her and amplified those feelings.

She's super angry and likely to break his nose if she ever sees him again. For real, though. He promised to explain things to her, but instead he just took off. She wanted that explanation.
