1. What is your Lavellan's name?
Yara. I’m not completely sold on this though. Its actually the name of one of my warcraft characters.
2. What is your Lavellan's class?
Knight-enchanter mage. She uses a magic sword and doesn't afraid of anything.
3. Which god's vallaslin does your Lavellan use?
June. I picked it mostly for cosmetic reasons, but perhaps her family were crafters in clan Lavellan.
4. How old is your Lavellan?
Early twenties. I actually intended for her to be about a decade older, but the Dalish Inquisitor seems to fit best as a fairly young woman. I also liked the idea that she was experiencing a lot of firsts in her great adventure in the outside world: seeing the ocean, large human cities, tasting unusual foods.
There is something amusing about Solas appearing to be about twenty years older than her. She's definitely the Nimue to his Merlin.
5. Did you intend to romance Solas when you started the game?
Yep. By the time I had started the game for reals, I already knew all the spoilers. I was getting on that ship and going down with it.
6. What is your Lavellan's relationship with her clan?
Yara loves her clan! Although there were times when her arrogant nature put her at odds with her family. Her closest relationships were with her grandmother and father. Her mother and her often argued, being similar in personality. Her relationship with Keeper Dashana was also somewhat combative at times. Dashana worried that Yara was a bit self centered and reckless.
Dashana had hoped that the trip to the conclave would give her a sobering taste of the human world, and she would return home the better for it.
7. What are your Lavellan's religious views?
At first, she is as religious as any Dalish. She had no reason to assume otherwise. Over time her faith started to falter. She saw how easily she could mislead the humans into worshipping her, and she became receptive to Solas and Morrigan’s more jaded look on the past.
She still does have some spirituality though. She might even have an affection for the chantry. Not a conversion, but just a respect for the truly pious.
8. Did your Lavellan drink from the Well?
No. Cole advised against it, and she wasn’t about to take the risk if Morrigan truly wanted it.
9. Did your Lavellan have Solas remove the vallaslin and why/why not?
My Lavellan did not. She could have. By the time Solas offers it to her, her clan has been destroyed and she knows in some small part of herself that she'll never be able to leave the larger world and go back to the wood again. I think, had Solas framed the removal of the vallaslin in a more pragmatic way, she might have agreed. Or at least thought about it.
But putting it into the context of slavery, and the idea that its just another thing her people got wrong... I don't think she would agree with Solas on that point. Whatever it meant back then is not what it meant to her. She worked hard for those markings. They once meant something to her. She certainly doesn't feel as though she is a slave. I think she is even emboldened by the idea- that anyone, even Solas, who deemed to look at her as a slave would come to regret it. She's proud of her people.
They have been wrong about many things, but they are survivors. And so is she.
10. What response did you choose after Solas broke up with you?
I can’t remember the line exactly, but it is the one where she offers him her help in finding whatever it is he needs. It hurt the most when he rejected her. Prior to that, there hadn’t been any problem she couldn’t solve. Everyone let her help. To be rebuffed like that by someone she loved, to feel as though he didn't trust her- that infuriated her.
11. How is your Lavellan taking Solas being gone and how are you taking it?
The anger has left. The battle is over, but she’s left with the unsettling feeling that something is unresolved.
She’s worried, mostly. Both for herself, and for Solas. She worries very much that she made a big mistake by trusting him. She worries that she didn't say the right thing at the right time.
She worries that maybe its all in her head, and he left her simply because she was too young to ever understand him.
Two Bonus Questions
12. Her closest non-romantic relationships?
Yara generally gets along with everyone in the Inquisition, but her closest relationship is probably with Dorian and Cassandra. Cassandra was a friendship that grew out of rocky ground, but eventually, both women came to respect one another.
After the events at Redcliffe and then losing her clan, Yara has come to see Dorian as something of an older brother. She loves him. They have similar, over the top personalities that jive well together. You can't go through hell and back and not have something of a unique relationship.
13. What animal would represent her?
A fox. She's quite smart, maybe a touch vain. Her color theme favors reds and autumn tones. Despite her temper, I don't think I could ever see her as a wolf. And she's not as gentle as a halla might be.
