I don't think they'll make him a cliche villain. Patrick Weekes specifically said in the NerdAppropriate interview that if someone says "Write me a villain," he'll do a passable job; but the best he can get is this mean, snarky, taunting villain, like the Nightmare's voice. (When the party's in the Fade at Adamant and the Nightmare taunts everyone with their greatest fears and shames - apparently Weekes wrote that portion.) Good enough, but not great. However, when someone says, "Write someone who truly believes they're doing something for the greater good, and might make what they know are questionable choices to make it a reality," his writing shines. And that's how he started off answering his Solas-portion of the interview. I don't think BioWare would start Solas' character off as this sympathetic, complex, good-intentioned, well-meaning extremist if they just planned on throwing it all away and made him a straight-up villain like Corypheus or Nightmare.
In that, I think we're safe.
Yeah I think Solas as he is right now, truly believes he needs to do what he needs to do for the greater good. I want to almost compare him to Leliana (not sure if this is an entirely appropriate comparison), back in Haven, where we have the option to stop her from killing the agent. During the game she's clearly someone I would consider some kind of an antagonistic figure. She's obviously cool in our book because she's on our side, imagine if she wasn't? In her mind, after all she went through, she believes the end justifies the means, so even though she doesn't like doing certain things she feel she needs to become this cold killer to get what the Inquisition needs (Even worst as hardened Leliana).
I think Solas is going through a similar struggle. With Leliana we had enough power to influence her choices because we were privy to some of those choices but with Solas what do we have? People here probably have a better clue what he might do but in my mind I'm not entirely sure what he wants to and how he plans to do it.
Does he want to get rid of the Veil? Does he want the spirits of the Fade to come hang out with us? Does he want to release the Pantheon from their prisons? If he restores the Pantheon, is he planning to build us a cool Temple too? We're kind Demi-Deities yes? (I remember this was an insult if he hates you lol). Does he want his hair back, if he had any in the first place? Does he want to restore magic to everyone in Thedas? Is he in a hurry to stop someone from doing something, hence why he needs more power?
Solas what is it, tell meeeeeeee......And if it's any or none of those things, what is he willing to sacrifice to succeed?
Bolded: Great, now you've given me a fanfic idea.
On the rest: You can say that again. I like Solas a lot, and my Lavellan fell fast and hard, but it did consistently bother... well, both of us that he is so disdainful of the Dalish. While he can become more open-minded, acknowledge their positive points, and even accept that they're important to Lavellan even if they aren't important to him (*ahem*SERA), it did kind of bother my Lavellan that he didn't accept her people, who she considered a huge part of who she was.
Yeah I wish we could've had a discussion about the Dalish but more specifically our Clan. Not enough bonding time what the hell~ Solas let me tell you about MY PEOPLE, k?

Rant over~ lol
