Ooohh, I see. I don't really watch porn so when I looked up why people kept bringing him up, he seem like a regular guy filming regular porn. But now that you explained it to me, it makes sense. Were you there when he had his AMA?

Either asleep or at work cause of stupid time zones. :(

It's really frustrating when I wake up and all the juicy thread talk has already happened. Most of the time if I comment it is already old news/topic. On the plus side, I have like twenty pages to read on my cell phone throughout the day. Yes, I read BSN on my smart phone when I am on the toilet at work.

I too see him as a more radical emotional and therefore messy version of Morrigan. They are both arrogant know-it-all but Morrigan has a much better grip on her emotions and has way better intuition. Of course she doesn't carry his burden... but right now I'd much rather put my fate in her hands.

I agree about Solas and Leliana both being the end justifies the means kind of people. To me they represent the dangerous dark side of idealism brought on by disillusionment. Leliana has a crisis of faith while Solas has a crisis about society. They hate the world as it is right now but do care about people a great deal. Both think radical change is necessary. Both are in an angry dark place in this game, and both can be softened up a bit.
I hope it will matter later if the inquisitor impressed him or confirmed his prejudice.

You and me both! I mean when you have conversations with him, it almost seems as if you've had some sort of positive influence in him.

I can't remember the exact wording in this conversation but they were talking about lost causes, or about failing at doing something. I believe one of the answers you can give him is that if you fail, you keep trying again until you succeed. He really likes that answer.

In my head I almost wished my Lavellan hadn't responded that way because I feel like he's even more determined to attempt whatever trainwreck he's working on. The only thing I wish is more insight into his plans and a way to gently nudge him into the right direction. Like we could with Leliana.

I think that's an unfair comparison to Solas because the leggings on the Elvhen guardians at Mythal's temple also had interlaced leg armor. I think it's just a thing that isn't meant to be over-considered like that.

I'm.. not sure Solas/ Fen'Harel would have wanted to be over any one land or have a dominion. The image of him as "the one who hunts alone" is too clear in my mind. I was, however, reading over the Codex entry the Qun, Canto 1 and it is... pretty much exactly how I see Solas/ Fen'Harel. In fact, I am going to BLATANTLY ALTER the Codex to fit.

TL;DR: The Ashkaari was like.. 99.9999999% probably Solas. Hence his anger and frustration at what the Qun has become in time and its limitations of free will on those who follow it. It's almost like the exact same disappointment he feels with the Dalish.

WALKING AWAAAAY~!

The parallels are most definitely there.   However, I think the Ashkaari was a conduit for Solas's ideas (Koslun was like Andraste) not Solas himself.  Like I said earlier: the inferred Qunari-Tevinter rebellion and rise of the Qun is almost a direct mirror for what happened in Thedas.  Revolution tears down an existing social Order, Philosophy of Choice gets set up, Philosophy is twisted horribly over time to support tyranny and Order.   Solas cries himself to sleep.

Then eventually he gets up and tries again.

Also, I have the weirdest hunch right now that Sylaise is just as bad as Elgar'nan, and that early humans (Tevinter) were her thing.  Ignore that for now.  It's probably nothing.

Quoting myself because I want to discuss this.

RANDOM QUESTION OF THE DAY:

What does everyone think Solas's leather underthings actually are?

Picture reference:

Armor? It would help a little, I guess, or provide compression for DVT prevention?....uh that's all I got, heehee

What's interesting is that Ashkaari is like... Hisraad. It's a place holder for a name and many people COULD be attributed to it because it's a word utilized to denote someone's occuptation, not actual name. The reason I speculate it being Fen'Harel is that the parallels are simply too strong and this being from Canto 1, the beginning of the Qun and the quote at the bottom being in many ways in direct CONTRAST to the practice of the Qun, and last but not least the MEANING of Ashkaari: "One who seeks"; scientists, philosophers, or those who have found enlightenment.

Whoa, we need to dig into that right there.  Solas insists on referring to Cassandra as "Seeker".   He uses her title in place of her name -always- and has obvious deep respect for her purpose, the Seekers' quest for truth and restoration of Balance.  There's something here.  Might be a mirrored organization in Qunari society, an original piece of the social system the Qun was intended to put in place.

Seekers, the Chant.  Ashkaari, the Qun.

Gah, I know so little about Qunari.   Need to think about this.

It's after Mythal - he asks what you'll do with the well. Most popular answers are - "I'll fix corypheus' mistakes and put things back the way they were' and he is relieved.  Or "I'll help this world move forward, we can't go back to the way things were" and he's now just speaking about himself and starts "How do you know the future will be better. What if you wake up and it's worse?".  I like that response.  Sera is right about him - his head is stuck up 1000 years.  I know he's ancient and that gives him an enormous amount of knowledge and insight but he was also asleep for thousands of years.

Whatever he's trying to do - it's unlocking power/magic that this world has not seen in thousands of years. The world has changed and shifted to accomodate that.  The world, the people in it now - have NO concept of what it is what it can do, how to coexist with it.  It'd be like handing a machine gun to people from the middle ages and telling them to 'go with it'.  No matter what you say to him, it'll be a trainwreck. That's how the story is set-up.  He thinks he's doing good and i feel that once we know more, you can see how he could be doing good, but  pragmatically/logistically it's going to be a disaster.

It's a combination of voice and just the character's attitude and way he carries himself, I think. At least, that's why I like him. LOL

my favorite is him scaring a guy flirting with John's future wife

As an aside, I am totally excited for Qunari-centric DLC now.  Was very irritated by the idea before, because no connection to Solas = irrelevant.

Now connection exists.  I doubt we'll see him in the flesh, but still.  His ideas are there, a huge part of his backstory is there.

Totally, totally excited.

Getting him to like you is easy since you can just ask him questions. When it comes to decisions, that's when things get conflicting.

Haven

Elf Inquisitor: Elves rules! Am I right? *Raises hand in anticipation of a high-five*

Solas Disapproves

Questions about  Corypheus

Elf Inquisitor: Tell me more about Corypheus.

Solas: Why don't you ask Cassandra or Varric? I'm sure they know more about it than I do.

Elf Inquisitor: Oh yeah! I forgot Varric already met Corypheus. Haha, thanks Solas! (:

Solas Disapproves

Conscript Mages:

As a player who played mage in every dragon age game. While most mages are acceptable you have to consider the lowest denominator when you are managing them because they make poor decisions every time. If the mages in the circle can't handle their own members, how can I expect them to take care of themselves if freed? Also until they pick a new leader other than Fiona, I shall conscript them rather than view as equals. Because I hate Fiona.

Solas Disapproves

Winter Palace:

Elf Inquisitor: You know what would be the real talk of the town? Stabbing Florianne in front of everyone.

Solas Disapproves

Elf Inquisitor: Elves rule. And Briala has the secret password to eluvians. And Leliana did say the lower the person, the more grateful they will be for rising them up.

Solas Disapproves

Well of Sorrows

Solas: Don't let Morrigan drink from the well, she's like a glutton staring at a feast.

Elf Inquisitor: Well we can't have two gluttons drink from the well. You should drink it, Solas

Solas: No. Don't ask me again.

Elf Inquisitor: Well ok, but I'll drink it.

Later:

Solas: I told you not to drink from the well!

Elf Inquisitor: Didn't I say there were two gluttons in the room?

Etcetera, and so forth. Lots of disapproves.  Lots of reloads.

OMG this is hilarious. I'm guilty of a few of these. For the most part I think I did ok with Solas but I could've done better. It gets easier to learn what he will disapprove or not. For the life of me I could never do a friendly Fenris romance. I could only rivalmance him but I can't complain grumpy Fenris is best Fenris.

WATCH EET. I don't like Benedict's looks outside of Sherlock (the voice is always djHHnhjkf though). The show is really good regardless!

Here is my Lavellan, happy to discover the cave before getting heartbroken. Solas is taking notes.

I know that Solas says the words "Cassandra" and "Leliana" at least once. Not when addressing them directly, but when referring to them. At least once.

Yeah that's the thing that drives me nuts about Solas. He has been asleep this whole time so he doesn't really know how the people in Thedas have developed over the years and how they will react to whatever he's planning. What does he think it's gonna happen if he ends up unleashing all this magic or whatever the heck he plans to do unto the world? That all elves will simply thank him or be grateful? Hey Old Man you need some perspective!

Don't get me wrong though. I've been wanting to do something for the living conditions of elves since DA:O. The city elf origin resonated with me so much is not even funny. ELVEN GLORY!!!!

DSFLKDLKFJDKJF THIIIIISSSSSSS.

And what is Varric? Child of the stone. Much of Solas' and Varric's disagreements stem from the fact that Varric presses for his individuality FROM his essence. What is he most afraid of? Becoming his parents. The Stone. And if the stone is Lyrium.. HAH! Well that's just poetic.

What is his problem with Varric's insistence that Cole, a Spirit, become more human? It would change the essence of what he is.

What is Abelas' name? Sorrow. It's not Frank. It's the essence of what he is and now feels.

Same goes with Solas. Pride. The essence of what he is and now fears.

Being called Vhenan? My heart? That's the essence of what you are to your lover.

Lethallin? Kinsman. Even if not true, it's the essence of your relationship and closeness.

The Qunlat functions similarly - a woman is no longer a woman if she's a warrior. But she is. But she isn't because she's a warrior. Her essence is now her as a warrior, not her as a woman.

My god, you're right.  It's his Thing.  He does that to everyone: refers to them by their role- his conception of their place in the universe.  Solas, you idiot, you totally stuffed the Qun into Koslan's head, and look what happened.

*facepalm*    Time to tear it all down and start over from scratch.  At least he seems to be getting better at putting in organizational safeguards and counter-balances that extend how long a reasonable degree of social balance can be sustained before it all has to be torn down again.

Keep trying, little wolf.  TwT   You'll get it right eventually.

From The World of Thedas:

The Seer of Kont-aar once wrote that Par Vollen is one of the only places where it is possible to understand Qunari society in its entirety.

"The Qunari view their whole society as a single creature: a living entity whose health and well-being is the responsibility of all," she wrote. "Each individual is only a tiny part of the whole, a drop of blood in its veins. Important not for itself, but for what it is to the whole creature. Because of this, the Qunari most outsiders meet belong to the army, which the Qun regards as if it were the physical body; arms, legs, eyes and ears, the things a creature needs in order to interact with the world. One cannot get to know a person solely by studying his hand or his foot, and so one cannot truly 'meet' the Qunari until one has visited their cities. That is where their mind and soul dwell."

@madrar: I am excited too!
