The codex mentions that the mine/hole was unstable and lots of wardens were killed when a tunnel collapsed on them. One of the Wardens tried to convince the Warden Commander that if they did one more big push they would reach the Old God, but the Commander at the time wasn't having any of it and abandoned the project.
<edit> I'm pretty sure it also says "ancient Warden journal" as the title when you pick it up

City elf is a good origin for Zevran. Relates to a lot of issues he can share. As for gender, he mentions that if given a choice he'd prefer a woman. In the city elf origin, you get a nice comment if you tell Nelaros "not until I saw you." Also if you're on PC, you have to get the Zevran Dialog Fix mod. It adds Zevran romance content that was in the game files but wasn't scripted properly. Originally you only got the Friend responses at the final battle, for instance.Since I pretty much live in the Solas thread now.. which gender elf do you recommend to romance Zevran? I've started a new DAO run with a female city elf (because I like the f!version of the origin), but now I'm waffling over whether I should switch to a dude (and maybe do Dalish origin for feels). I'm going to spare Loghain, so it doesn't really matter as far as dark ritual goes, but... I dunno.

That the Wardens know where the Old Gods are buried and haven't focused all their efforts in between Blights to organize the surface nations and Orzammar infuriates me. Then they might, y'know, have a chance at cutting through the darkspawn. *sigh*

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm 28. I don't do fangirling, I don't do fanfics. The shows I like have been off the air for years so there's a beginning and an end. I loved Dragon Age since the beginning but was never emotional about it before. I mostly loved the characters the same way you'd love the memories of a fond child-hood friend. Aww Alistair/Warden. Aww Shale. Awww Nobody in DA2 - I obviously let Hawke die. DID YOU HEAR HOW ALISTAIR TALKS ABOUT HIS LADY?
This romance BROKE ME. When I first played through it, I was absolutely gutted. I have so many other things I need to do with my time...I need this to be resolved.
I'm dissertating and checking this thread. Because of reasons.
I'm a medievalist and writing on the great pagan question of what happens what mortals have to confront the divine, when gods are made flesh. So. Obvious appeal is obvious.
The tragedy of Solas (not even in the romance context) is so palpable in the game.
When teaching Anglo-Saxon literature, I like to make my students imagine living in Europe and seeing pagan ruins (think Roman ruins) and knowing they were important but the meaning is lost and negated. I like to think that the tragedy of Beowulf the confrontation of such a loss. When I was playing the game, before even knowing the ending, the setting was super-charged with this feeling of loss. Especially for the elves, only fragments remain.
Anyhoo, I have a lot of feelings.

I am on the PC, and I have all the dialogue bugfix mods! Morrigan's, ZDF/Zevring, etc. I have already anticipated the awesome that is being fixed in this playthrough. I did start with f!city elf because I love the origin, and I totally wanted to see Zevran's reaction to marriage later on. Also, Shianni.
I do like hearing what other people have headcanon'd as their personal Zevran romance Warden. Most of the fanart has Zevran and female warden, though I've read some adorable fanfics with a male Warden as well.
Most of the people in the thread have their headcanons pretty well established, but I haven't really decided who my Warden will be (I really like how romanced Morrigan plays out in DAI though). This will be my first time actually paying attention to Zevran and not kinda fumbling around just to get the achievement. I'm pretty excited, and it'll give me a break from later being heartbroken with Fen'Inan when she gets dumped.

I suppose the fear is that their digging will attract the Darkspawn and make it easier for them to reach the Old God, thus causing the very problem they want to avoid if they got to it first and turned it into an Archdemon.
Warden: Good news everyone... we found the Old God!
Public: Hooray!
Warden: Unfortunately, all that digging made it easier for the Darkspawn to reach it before us...
Public: Hoo... wait?
Warden: And now it's an Archdemon and rallying them into a horde, with a clear line to the surface from the tunnels we dug!
Public: What does that mean?
Warden: To put it simply... cheese it!

Poor darkspawn, having to dig all over Thedas to find the stinking Archdemons. The last three Archdemons of the archdemons were probably delayed because they were hipster gods that hung out in lame places like southern Ferelden.

It's especially sad that even with over four hundred years of occupation by the Romans, some of the gods of Roman Britain, both the pagan gods worshipped by the native population, the pagan gods worshipped by the Romans and the gods of both cultures who were conflated into one and the same, have since had their names and legends lost to history.
It really does bring home the idea that Solas brings up in the Temple of Mythal, that the Elven pantheon only exist now as half remembered stories, that were half-true to begin with and we more than likely half-mixed up with those of other cultures, such as those of Tevinter?
