Okay, I am SOOOOOO far behind now but grocery shopping and international postage don't wait for anxiety attacks to go away. Ah... medication.
I feel like I'm back on the farm: overdosing on painkillers just to make it through the day and still be able to get up the next morning.
Eugh every time someone suggests Mythal and Solas were lovers it makes me feel like Leliana when you ask if what she had with Divine Justinia was more than friendship (insinuating something romantic) and she totally rips you a new one.
It's been said before but I'll say it again: you can be really good friends and love each other without having a sexual relationship.
Continuing discussion under spoiler because it goes into adult territory for the squeamish.
In truth, because of the myth that Fen'Harel refused Andruil and laughed himself silly, and the theory that Andruil went insane and brought upon the red lyrium corruption, I actually headcanon Fen'Harel and Andruil as a bonded couple. The Wolf and the Huntress is not a bad combination. It also adds yet more weight to his "what are you going to do with the power of the well" conversation, because his "wife" for lack of a better term came across an unknown power and it drove her mad, and he lost her.
I admit I have no more "evidence" to go on than that but I like the idea. Plus the guy is like.... what? 5000 years old? He's been in love before. He *probably* has been a father before - which to me helps explain his relationship with Cole a lot better than just: Solas likes spirits. Even if he spent 2000 years in uthenera he's still got a lot of life we know nothing about.
I also still say he used to be the God of the Arts. He's too artistic for it to not have been an integral part of himself. And artists, for better or worse, are always the ones who see injustice first. That is the role of art: to delve deep into the mass of social construction, examine it, and expose it for the world to see, whether the masses want to acknowledge it or not.
What a dragon age inquisition DLC will be about.
I think one of the DLCs for Dragon Age Inquisition will be about the Grey Warden’s Calling and how to cure it with the aid of The Architect. This is foreshadowed in many ways in the game.
In a letter from the grey warden mentions that they are in “the west” looking for a cure for the calling. So long as the grey warden is alive, they will be doing this quest. Supposedly Morrigan is the one who tells them of this tip. I assume if the grey warden is not alive, they will be replaced by another character with similar goals. AKA Alistair, Logain, or Stroud.
Alistair’s mother, Fiona, is in the game. She is the only grey warden to be cured of the taint and the calling. She might be wrapped up in this whole thing in some way.
In the well of sorrows when I reversed the whispers, it talks about the calling. Among the lines said in the well are “go to him” and “the calling”. In the dragon age keep, one of the import world state options was if you wanted to kill the architect. They would not add this if it was not important.
The architect is the only person to ever figure out how to get rid of the calling in darkspawn by doing a reverse joining ritual with grey warden blood. At the ending of Dragon Age Awakening his hoard of non-calling darkspawn can go off and form their own community.
It doesn’t matter if you killed the Architect or not, it is hinted in Dragon Age 2 that he survives somehow no matter what. If you killed him, he lets Hawke know it is him keeping the deep roads clear. If you do kill him, the deep roads are still cleared but you are not told why.
I think the decision on if you killed him or not will only affect his dialogues and disposition to help the grey warden. This type of thing happens all the time.
----
Do I have any holes in my theory?
Its a good theory. Far better than anything I could come up with. I'm not very good at theorising with such scant evidence - probably why I never went into archaeology like I originally planned.
And I swear if this is what happens, and I don't get to see Joan and Zevran make an appearance as a happy couple, I am going to be SO pissed! I already missed out on Fenris, so I WANT ZEVRAN!
It could be a bit of both, lazy animating or holding back a bit to control himself. I try to prefer imagining he is holding back but I do wish that arm did something, double butt grab maybe... xD
I swear every time I see that butt grab all I can think of is Thane. Hey @wildannie ? That was your flycam screenie of Thane's double butt grab wasn't it? Do you still have a copy, for... scientific comparison?
Yes, scientific comparision. That's it. Totally nothing else. Just... science.
(Didn't there used to be a "halo" smiley a little while ago? Or did they get rid of that?)

I think it's best to view these within its own context, yet with added substance drawn from all of these sources simultaneously to construct a more complete picture of what's at the heart of DA (or Bioware's stories in general, they have impressed me in this) as long as we always keep in mind that going in these more concrete directions can lead to the happy insanity of infinite connections in infinite combinations that ultimately lead us in rhetorical circles.
Aaand I realize that was probably the most oblique way I could have phrased this possible, so I'll just go back to the lurk corner now.
My background is philosophy and history of ideas, so I know what you are saying. I was tempted to throw in Heart of Darkness for good measure, but I really should stop doing half a**ed "modern man ala Zygmunt Bauman" idea tracing and get back to what I'm suppose to do with this game academically - computer game philosophy. I just get distracted a lot. The game is packed to the brim with ideas I wan't to explore, but there's not enough time.
But, please, throw in yours! I'd love to read it.

<Demands of the Qun. Space. Carry on.>
I completely agree with you about Solas having a lot more to his life and a lot of experience. I don't quite ship him and Andruil, just because the two of them as bickering siblings that go on adventures together when Mythal gets sick of their crap is too dear to my heart.
Until she goes psycho, of course.
I also like the idea that he was all artsy. I get the feeling he enjoyed wandering around listening to story-tellers, picking up new types of art, dropping by on the dwarves to see what kind of statues they're carving, that kind of thing.

Personally, I think the only happy ending would be if Solas would have no powers anymore. Just a normal mage with the ability to walk the fade. All his work and plans are what make him so unhappy. If he would just let that go and let himself be with Lavellan. Lose his immortality and work with her for a future. I think finally when he actually lives a life he will be happy. Growing old and sharing aging with someone else and finally not dying alone in bed in the arms of Lavellan would be his happy ending.
A happy ending in the short term... but in the long term, most likely the end of individual free will and choice.
As Flemythal says, "Alas. So long as the music plays, we dance." Personally, I'd rather Solas kept fighting. He has to. The big picture is too important to barter for a few decades of happiness, no matter how amazing the fermented fruit juice might be. Plus, if the Anchor is having the effect I suspect it's having on Lavellan's ability to sustain her physical body via the fade, we offer him the option of a partner in the eternal, brutal calculus of balance: an actual ally, someone to share the burden of sacrifice.
He doesn't have to give up what he believes in to not be alone. ^w^ He'll have us.

Not like you guys would care. But i got a few asks on tumblr about what I think Solas' D looks like.
Most people would ignore this type of question. But me being a bastion of truth dug deep to find the answer.
So I mean... if you want to know... you know where to look.

The last time I made a suggestion to concrete what the physical D is everyone said that was going too far. Best to keep it vague and fictional. Bonus if nonbelievable.
edit1: bonus bonus points to disappoint them. The most average of average of average Ds. The kind that you would say, "meh, it's nothing worth talking" Because on the bell chart of averages, he would be at the center.

This really was a great scene. Ironic that Mythal is a mother figure in the elven pantheon, if I understand correctly, and then you have a scene like this.
No, no... not ironic. Fitting. This is the precise point where Morrigan earns Mythal's God Soul. She passes the test by offering up her own life to protect her child, exactly as Mythal did during the first Rebellion / fall from Eden. Flemeth's upbringing was harsh, but purposefully so. It made Morrigan what she is: forged her into a character with tremendous will, tenacity, and purpose.
This is the point where she proves she has the heart to match. TwT

Oh my gods that is hilarious! Do it again! ![]()
If we're recommending Star Trek spin-offs... Star Trek: Enterprise is a good one if you find some of the utopia aspects of the older ones a little hard to swallow. Enterprise is set at the beginning of the space exploration timeline for humans. They don't have replicators. Money is still very much in circulation. Vulcans and humans don't get along like bros. It's a very humanizing version of the show. There are multi-episode arcs mixed in with the more traditional episodic ones. People should give it a shot too. And you get more background lore on how "modern" Kirk and Picard era Vulcans became what they are!
For general fantasy... Farscape is my #1 recommendation. Someone else talked about it earlier in the thread, but I have to throw in my vote as well. Claudia Black (Morrigan) is pretty awesome, but it's a great old series all on its own. It's definitely different than Star Trek, but I recommend it for anyone willing to get into a setting that isn't focused on humans.
Oh, Farscape was brilliant! I loved that it had aliens who were actually alien. Plus it was an Aussie production full of Australian actors. It's a shame it was cancelled, but that's Channel Nine for you. They always do **** like that. Don't forget The Peacekeeper Wars mini series. They tie off the whole story, and the end is really, really, really sad. ![]()

We need a dwarven perspective. What is special about the dwarven perspective? In the game, they make it sound like it's a unique trait. How is it different from an analystic person of another race?

Was gonna post this earlier while we were in the reasonable theories phase, but had MMO obligations and couldn't finish till now.
Thread's got me thinkin about the possible things Solas is planning again. It seems the two major candidates are: 1) Time Travel that will erase everything we know, and put it back to before he broke the world or 2) Hoping to fix his mistake by erasing the veil instead, and restoring its connection to the mundane. I think both are equally likely, but if I had to pick one, I'd definitely pick the second one. Reasons:
1) The Problem with Time Travel:
This theory absolutely holds water. While many dislike the idea of time travel in the game at all, it can't be contrived anymore, considering we experience it in the game. It can also be said that many of the events of the mage-side could be seen as foreshadowing. I honestly have no in game or lore-based reason why this can't happen. Instead, I'd point out to the powers that be: most people would -not- want to play a game where the things they did and the heroes they created and met simply never existed. In fact, I can think of a single person on the entire planet who might possibly be ok with this, and that would be my hubby, who has 0 interest in this game.
But I say that because...
Take the ME3 backlash, and Imagine the cataclysmic outrage if people found out that their Inquisitors, Hawkes, Wardens and every single game decision that was supposed to matter so damn much never even happened. That's why if this is his plan, Solas absolutely can not succeed. Which means the player must stop him or it's game over, and I don't like the odds that they'd let us do that without killing him.
2) The Problem with the Veil:
Sadly, I feel this theory has much less in game stuff to support it I think. We don't really know how the veil even came to be or what exactly erasing it would do. The lore is all mush and half truths. However, we do have Sandal's prophecy and Cole's banter that seem to indicate this theory is in the ballpark.
So this is the Solas Thing that I'm rooting for.
It would obviously be devastating to him. I've posted this all before and I'm not the only one who's mentioned it, but releasing his ancient peers might not be the focus of the Thing he has to do to fix stuff. It might be an unpleasant side effect. Either way, freeing them does seem to be a part of it, and I believe he expects his life to end when it happens. Countless others will also die until someone deals with the chaos. It may be why he needs us at Skyhold, a place where the darkness (fade?) is kept at bay. Someone has to be there who can clean up the mess when the magic comes back and his old buddies are back in town. The Inquisition has to survive, even if he doesn't.
It doesn't sound promising, but the only reason I prefer this path is because I can see us being able to reach him right after he does the Thing if we get a Wolf Hunt. We'll see him for who he really is, and he'll be exhausted, wounded and either running for his life or waiting for oblivion. We will get to deal with him in true bioware fashion:
Kill Solas [Fen'harel will die. Probably.] <( glowy such important choice circle )> Kiss Solas [Re-Enable Solas. I want Solas Back]
After that, we can decide how to deal with the rest of the crap in DA4.
However, given my seat on team expect-the worst, I have to qualify all of this with the just as likely scenario that we won't be able to change a damn thing and Solas is doomed. Which would be total bullshit and tick me right off, but it won't be the first time they've done something like that, so I'm afraid to actually hope for anything else.
