I saw a theory on tumblr I was really digging for the whole rebirth scenario, but I'm unsure If I can find it..
Here It is. It seems plausible enough, atleast to me. But we all have our own Headcanon/theories of course.

I know this has been discussed last night but I never can keep up with this thread. I just wanted to add a way in which this theory might be somewhat true without involving time travel (time travel is such a cop out in my book most of the time!)
So, Fen'Harel/Solas went to sleep at least a thousand years ago. when he finally wakes, he is faced with pretty much a nightmare. Everything he's known and loved and gone and the sacrifice he's done to try to make things better in the past has backfired spectacularly. Not only that, but when he tries to connect with this new world (trying to contact the Dalish), he's rejected. In this new world, he has no one alive, only spirits as company. I can see, in that state of mind, the world of the future not seeming "real" to him. It's easy then to plan on making changes without caring about how it'll affect people. It's quite easy to be very ideological when you have no personnal stakes in the matter.
But then, he meets the Inquisition. Whether he romances Lavellan or not, he still starts, slowly, to make friends. It's easy to see, I think, how aloof he is at first. He doesn't really want a relationship with anyone, as it would complicate his plans so much, but almost in spite of himself, he starts caring for people in the here and now. Much harder to pull off his grand plan now that the people of the future are starting to become quite "real" to him. I think this hits him in the grove, when he realizes he's about to tell Lavellan the truth. He's gone too far; if he doesn't pull back he'll never be able to be detached enough from present Thedas and its inhabitants to put his plan to execution. You can quite literally see his face fall when Lavellan tells him she loves him. As long as he was the only one who'd talked of his feelings, he felt...safer I think? But now, he needs to leave. He needs to put some distance so he can think clearly again. So, no need for time travel at all for Solas to feel alienated from the present. For him, he's quite the nightmare compared to what he used to know, and he's lost everything.
Finally, I have the feeling that the orb breaking pushes him to implement some kind of plan B. Seeking Flemeth/Mythal wasn't his first choice. I still wonder how he found her though. Or maybe she's the one who summoned him? Someone talked about how Flemythal might be manipulating even him into playing into her "reckoning". I wouldn't be surprised at all if that were the case. We'll see.
P.S. : Sorry if this has been discussed before. I'm still 15 pages late on the thread. I just didn't want to lose my train of thoughts.
