I really need to read TME. I read the Stolen Throne way back in the day and I thought it was...alright. But it didn't grab me. Then again, back then I was more of a Mass Effect fan anyways. Inquisition really made me fall in love with the lore, especially elven lore.

Also, Kreebby on tumblr, the one who captured that awesome flycam shot of the fade kiss, just posted the video. And it is amazing.

I like to think he was a buddy of Fen'Harel's back in the day. And yeah, like Abelas. But he strikes me less as the dour Temple Sentinel type and more a freewheeling agent.

If it wasn't for Fen'Harel's hatred for slavery, I'd say he was one of Fen'Harel's priests.

...Even taking into account Fen'Harel's hatred for slavery, I'm going to say that he's one of Fen'Harel's old priests/magical theory discussion buddies, and that the vallaslin is fake.  :D

Yep, even before the game came out, my original assumption was that the vallaslin was fake.  Now I'm not so sure, but I don't think it really matters.  Even if he was one of Fen'Harel's pals, he would have been using fake vallaslin to fool the Dalish clan into working with his plan.

I believe he claims to be Dalish.

Briala: How are the Dalish? You have not spoken of your people.
Felassan: They have a wonderful new plan! It ends with the shemlen killing each other off, leaving the Dales free for the elves to rule.
Briala: *raises eyebrow* How does it begin?
Felassan: Riding around in wagons pulled by deer. They're still working out the middle.

(Copied from TV Tropes Masked Empire page.)

Also while looking this up I found a really important line. "We were everyone. There were no humans, no dwarves, no race but the elves."

But...but...There was a few thousand years where you knew of the dwarves. :o

But at the end Briala accuses him (my favorite part where he gets all scary calm) and says are you even Dalish? And he never has a response. I'm not remembering that perfectly and I don't have my book.

I think he's something like Abelas. Not Dalish, but a servant of one of the old gods. I thought it interesting that his Vallaslin was always moving around and she never spoke of what God it was to...I wonder if it had some kind of magic there that kept her from focusing on it or paying much attention.

Excellent, thank you both!

So while browsing TV Tropes after finding the Felassan thing, I came across an interesting idea in the WMG section.

http://tvtropes.org/...nAgeInquisition

Namely, that the 'dead whispers' Corpyheus heard in the Black City was something similar to the Well of Mythal. A geas placed upon him, if not the other Magisters. They suggest the Forgotten Ones, but I'm more inclined to think it was Dumat/Elgar'nan/Falon'din/The Sun/Okay Maybe It Could Be the Forgotten Ones.

If I remember correctly, Felessan makes a deal with Briala to assist her on the condition she'll never ask about where he came from again. He's listed as Dalish on the wiki, and he certainly passes as one, but I doubt he came from any modern Dalish group. I always got the sense that his people were probably dangerous, and he didn't want Briala to look too closely.

Bloody sea creatures again!

GAIDER!

GHILAN'NAIN!

So what do we make of this hypothetical eighth Old God?

Mims, I got the impression that 'his people' are one of the Ancient Elves that Solas alludes to with Abelas. "Other elves, other duties."

I really want to meet them all in a DLC.

I haven't read The Masked Empire, but it seems like Felassan chose Briala over his duty? Maybe Solas knew their story so that's another thing that warns him to stay away from Lavellan. I feel that Solas knows Felassan, Briala, and Mihris in some way. How else did he know that Mihris was hiding something if you play a human inquisitor?

Still out of likes.  SO MUCH LIKE.

Hnnngh, just the way he pulls her toward him, like he'll actually go crazy if he doesn't kiss her right that very instant.  Also, can we take a moment to send some happy thoughts toward BioWare's cinematics and animation?  We've come a long way from the weird underwear humping and awkward face-mashing of DA:O.

I honestly think that along with the visuals, it's the kissy noises that make a huge difference, even if it means the poor VAs have to make out with their hands in the booth.

I'm on the Forgotten Ones side of the fence.  The idea of the magisters as an equivalent to a well drinking Inquisitor is really interesting.  The parallels actually make sense...

Ah! I take a break to actually play the game we're all talking about and I miss so many great conversations!

I love people bringing their own disciplines into analyzing Dragon Age. :) All of the connections you make to Old English literature are fascinating to read.

And that reminds me that there are ravens everywhere in the maps. And it's interesting that they're so closely tied to Dirthamen (even his vallaslin is a raven). Makes me think of Leliana and her ravens. I always wonder if they're checking up on me when I see them.

I've seen the headcanon that the wolves are helping to guide you home (with some direction from Solas) thrown around, and I must say I really like the idea.

I half-expected such as well, but now I'm pretty well convinced. Retroactive headcanon accepted! :D

Thank you!

I think the wolves guiding the Inquisitor is spot on. It was too deliberate of a decision to just provide atmosphere.

Indeed. Especially since there is some foreshadowing to hint at this perspective even within the game; provided one completes the right quest with the right party member.

Since wolves are often a negative symbol in European literature and folk stories (that I know of), most European fantasy games depict them as just mindless beasts that'll attack anything that moves (that I know of). When the Inquisitor goes to see Master Dennett and runs into its first wolf pack (theoretically), I kind of rolled my eyes and thought, "Ugh, this again." But then, during the quest to stop the wolves, the NPCs make it clear that attacking people is not normal wolf behavior (they even cite real-wolf behavior, like just going after livestock and then fleeing when humans come running with torches), and then it's revealed that they've actually been coerced by demons. When you free the pack from the demon, you hear howling in the distance, and Solas specifically says that they're happy to be freed.

Given what we know of Solas and his connection to wolves...

Then the Inquisitor is later lost in a blizzard and trying to find his/her way back to the others, and hears howling in the distance. While the aforementioned quest was optional, I felt the devs themselves set up the idea that wolves are neutral or benevolent rather than evil by nature, and that howling signifies "all is well" as opposed to "doom is upon you."

At least, that was my gaming experience. ^^

I wrote a thing.

Actually I wrote a thing a long time ago, I only just got around to posting it. I was hoping for some feedback. I haven't written anything since my mother died and it's been a real struggle, so I am very unsure of it's quality.

I was thinking that Felassan did either that, or realized that bringing the gods back wouldn't make things better. Probably both. Briala opened several eluvians, one of which could lead to where the gods are being held, or at least lead to a place close enough. With Felassan betraying his master...they're stuck. Again.

Bioware's animation team deserves all the kudos in the world. I loved every single romance scene because they're just so artfully animated. The way the characters move just says so much about them. Like how, even when he pulls away, Solas waits until the last possible moment to let go of Lavellan's waist. I just noticed that and it's the sweetest thing. He's just so reluctant to let her go.

And yeah, the noises do make a difference.  I salute the VAs for all of the awkward hand-kissing that went into making them.

He did! Although he possibly did it while working within the confines of a geas. I don't know how I'd describe their relationship, but it felt a bit fatherly. He loved Briala, but not necessarily in a romantic way.

As for Briala/Mihris...I'm not sure. I think Solas was just suspicious of Mihris, and was probably already familiar with the ruins and what it was she might have been after. That said, I played a mage, so I don't know if I missed out on some additional dialogue there if Solas was the only mage in the party. Briala he doesn't seem to know, but that could be him lying too.

Just checked my Kindle and yep, he doesn't really want to answer that question:

Briala: "Are you even Dalish?"

[...]

Felassan: "Do you want to know the answer to that question, da'len, or do you want my help?"

[...]

Felassan: "That wasn't a rhetorical question."

She swallowed."I want your help, hahren."

"Good". And with that he pulled her into a hug. "And because you were wondering, you were the flower. Now..." He stepped back, and his grin now was predatory but familiar and safe, at least for Briala. "...let us go kill some itchweed." (referring to the Dalish clan in TME)

Agreed. :)

As for wolves in European folklore, yeah, they're basically seen as vicious, cunning killers.

The only 'mainstream' European groups that compared themselves I can think of off the top of my head are the Romans. (I know I'm missing a few.) The Romans took the few that, "Yeah, they're dangerous, they fight dirty, and they're awesome. We don't like them, but we bet you're a lot more afraid of them than we are. Romans 536 A.U.C! *waves aquilifer*:

However, head to the east, and the Turks and the Mongols have myths about how they're descended from wolves, and wolves are portrayed more positively as being cunning and cool rather than evil. My personal theory is that that's because the Romans and the others in the southern band of Eurasia, the 'civilized' agricultural areas saw wolves as a large danger to their livelihood. Wolves are sneaky when it comes to eating your livestock. But the Turks and Mongols were more nomadic, and saw the wolves as the ultimate hunters. They respected that.

Yes I do feel the need to shoe-horn Romans everywhere I can.

I'm holding out for a Lair of the Shadow Broker-style DLC for him, which ties up enough loose ends and provides a "happy for now" sort of open ending. Then a new protagonist for the next game.
