I only have one friend that I hug, she's kind of spiritual and maternal though so it doesn't feel weird with her.  I remember when I moved abroad (speaking of which, omg living in a country where EVERYONE hugs and kisses when they greet each other..argghhh, I did it, it was hard) before I went I was with my best friend back then, she's exactly the same as me but since I was moving overseas we thought we better hug each other goodbye..haha oh that was awkward, we both laughed very hard and decided we wouldn't do that again... oh wait there was one time I gave her a hug, but I kinda had to in that moment (she was diagnosed with breast cancer).

I have all the feelings and I'm an extremely empathic person, but not so tactile.. it's a bit of a strange mix really... I have been seen as rather aloof in the past, but also at the same time many people have said I have a very open and friendly face and appear incredibly approachable.

Having said all of this though, I don't have a problem with that with partners on a romantic level.

I do this every time.  I tweaked my video after I published it.  Here's the new version of my most recent Solas fan video.

Gwyvian! Yes! I love all of those links.

I also want to throw in Neil Gaimans American Gods, as it emcompasses a lot of these themes too. I'm going to read through your post a couple of times more before I respond (unless I'm going to be a good girl and write on my thesis instead - I need to stop rewarding my self for the 18 pages I wrote yesterday).

I look forward to it!

Hah, I sympathize deeply. The last month of writing my thesis... did things to me. But I got the idea I wanted there! (It was this very subject, surprisingly.) I got much acclaim for it, too, now I'm trying to expand on those ideas. (And finish my novel. And get the other one published. And sort out the poetry. And work for a living meanwhile. And resist playing DAI constantly. I'm... not too good at organizing outside of my head.)

If there is to be a cautionary tale from that year (those are interesting, particularly tailored to young minds) then I would say do have fun here and there and definitely reward yourself for progress. (Then finish it. Really.)  :D

Also PC online game community are generally female friendlier.

growing up with xbox I preferred if they thought I was a 12 year old boy.

That's also assuming that people create Inquisitors of their own gender, too.  I know of women gamers who prefer roleplaying as men in RPGs.

It's a pretty good assumption that alot of people would play as themselves. Some would say they couldn't imagine themselves playing the opposite gender as though the character's reaction would play differently. Why else would every fantasy game human tends to be the most popular?

Where to begin. The tactical camera is useless, for starters- which means other mechanics like Hold are useless, and it's out of the question to put the difficulty up or turn on friendly fire. The loot mechanic requires you to sidle up to something and find the tiny, tiny hit box and get it to line up just right then watch an animation- over and over again. Navigation is awkward and requires both a hand on the mouse and on the direction keys. If there's an auto-run I haven't found it yet. Combat requires a constant hold on the R key, which is just ridiculous, and no auto-target of enemies so you can end up flailing at nothing. There are other annoyances like only having 8 ability slots, but these are the main ones. Since the game is so big and requires a lot of farming and fetching, having the basic mechanics be so tedious pretty much kills it.

I actually bought a controller because I heard how much easier it was to play with one, and it seems game developers aren't going to make proper PC versions anymore since this happens with other games as well. Unfortunately the controller I got seems to not mesh with the game because only one button worked, enough so that I broke my game and had to manually get it back to MKB controls. I'm not about to spend more money trying to make a bad control system work. I've gotten enough enjoyment out of the game with my Lavellan playthrough that I'm not sorry I bought it, but there's no way I'm getting any other character through Haven.

Something to sum up the difference between a KB + M setup and a controller (for me): Playing Nightmare on PS4 has been easier for me than playing Normal on PC. I have no idea why--I've actually checked to make sure my difficulty was still on Nightmare (it was)--but I am breezing through fights that were challenging for me on PC at a much lower difficulty. Of course, I have more experience with the game now (I have ~7 Inquisitors on PC), but it's still really weird, especially since this is the first time I've even held a PS4 controller or played a game on the PS4. I expected it to be more difficult...

Solas has actually kept me alive on either platform more times than I can count, which probably helps with my fondness towards him. During the Pride Demon fight I was constantly praising him and his barriers, haha. (In the end, Leliana killed it. That was the hardest fight I've had in the game; I haven't died since, excluding the game not giving me Mark of the Rift soon enough and letting me be annihilated by those demons in the cave after In Your Heart Shall Burn or whatever.)

Yet Another Theory on DWARVES and THE STONE

The Stone lives beneath Orlais. Mathas gar na fornen pa salroka atrast.

http://dragonage.wik...iki/Nexus_Golem

How can the Stone be simultaneously everywhere and in one place? There is a core. Think AI core. Think cybernetics.

We have speculated that 'The Stone' was crafted by June. Move away from the traditional, medieval idea of crafting from metals. June was interested in the ideas her Pantheon brethren were interested in - manipulation of spirits, godhood, and the ultimate goal of true immortality. But she took a different path than Ghilan'nain's trapping of spirits from the fade. June set out to see if she could artificially create life. Actual lives, who would devotedly worship her for eternity.

From a core consciousness, veins of lyrium would grow throughout the planet - a global neural network. What these lyrium veins are made of is debatable - perhaps they are condensed fade particles? Or simply a product of June's own magic-infused craft. Whatever it is resembles artificial plasma used in cybernetics to imitate blood - particularly, that liquid which serves as conduit for mental synapses connecting, transferring vast amounts of data. This also works for the "flooding" with lyrium of a golem shell to bring it to life.

Actually no, sound works in a very specific way, sound is waves, silence can be created by a sound wave being mirrored.

waveinteraction.gif

Look at that mangled wave. When humans and elves touch lyrium, skin-to-skin, they suffer. But dwarves are at least resistant to the effects. Lyrium's 'song' is the stream of artificial consciousness, which is on a very slightly different frequency than that of 'biological' life forms. Skin is but a slither of membrane potentially connecting two consciousnesses. In theory, perhaps, there may be rare circumstances where data can be transferred from 'The Stone' to 'biological' life forms.

Which leads me onto the existence of dwarves as life forms... which may not be popular. 'Cybernetics' is a broad term, concerned with the way systems work, the way they govern themselves, and the way they process information. These systems can include what is typically seen as machine, or a human body. This area tries not to have bias towards either the mechanical or the biological.

Solas [in reference to dwarves]: Although it may twitch to give the appearance of life, it may never dream.

The conclusion is... dwarves were mostly biological beings crafted for the purpose of being capable of interacting with and experiencing the physical world - though connected to 'The Stone' instead of the fade. When a dwarf conceives a child, a data package with size equivalent to a soul is 'downloaded' into a growing body. When a dwarf dies, it's 'soul' - it's consciousness - is uploaded to 'The Stone'.

Paragons are revered so greatly due to the contribution they have made to the collective consciousness on returning. High achievers are only made paragons on death because of this. Life in the physical world continues to have value, collecting information and experience with each lifespan. This may explain the anxiety dwarves have regarding the surface, too. Dwarves may still return to 'The Stone' when they die, but so much experience with other races and cultures is perhaps not relevant to the collective 'dwarf' consciousness. The data's lack of use for dwarven society in particular lessens the whole.

The term 'Cybernetics' comes from the greek for 'helmsman', 'controller' or 'governance'. Dwarves refer to 'The Stone' as 'she'. I theorise that June, in order to assure success, included her own consciousness/spirit in the process. The core deep under Orlais may be where she initiated this.

If darkspawn reached the core in order to infect it with 'Blight'.... it may be a slow chain reaction in corrupting all 'The Stone's lyrium 'neural network'. Red lyrium may be found in places where the infection has spread.

<snip>

Dwarven legends state, that the Profane are dwarves so corrupt that even the Stone rejects them, they feed on lyrium, and, in fact, chose a name for themselves, because they feel that they were abandoned, although it is unclear by whom. A poem found on the walls of Revann Thaig implies, that when trapped or abandoned aeons ago, the profane "feasted upon the gods".

Now, I've been thinking... what could have made a dwarf corrupt to join the Stone? My guess, it's a connection to the Fade, strengthened by ingesting lyrium later on, as it was clearly revered by ancient dwarves (red lyrium idol). Maybe, and it's a very big 'maybe', mind you, such dwarves were considered a threat for a hive mind of Titans, and thus became rejected and later became rock wraiths.

<snip>

With any localised infection, we may cut the bad limb off or suck out the poison in order to keep the body healthy. Profane are the 'bad limbs'. The Blight, however, infects the very 'spirit'.... something which cannot simply be cut out. Yet, the slow spread and accumulation of Red Lyrium on the surface may indicate 'The Stone' working overtime to flush it out... like puss spilling from an infected wound.

This theory gives more weight to existing debates within Thedas. We may agree with Solas' unfavorable opinions on the Qun - a way of life for those who, for whatever reason, choose to give up their individuality for the greater good. Yet what of those whose 'collectiveness' cannot possibly be a choice? That for dwarves, it may be a part of their very existence? Are we still to tell them that the way they live is not the correct way?

Aaand that's all I have for now. Disclaimer: not expert in any of these things, just a fan.

I'm having a hard time finishing my canon playthrough. Should I let Briala take the throne or should I let them all have truce? I kind of want Celene to die but I kind of don't because I'm worried that Gaspard will try to be an expansionist.

*gasp* I am sort of catching up!

Oooh, I would be delighted!

<analysis snip>

I realize all this is very chaotic and probably is impossible to follow. There's just no way to cram this into brevity. Perhaps I will seize upon these ideas individually, yet does that not defeat the purpose of an objective analysis of multiple worlds simultaneously?

...Perhaps I should just stay quiet now.

HAHAHAHA.  Nope.

*forcibly sits you down with crazy eyes*

The Jungian Fade parallel (with potential bonus weirdness of personal consciousness-as-inverted-veil) is something that hadn't even occurred to me, and it really should have.  No idea if intended by the writers, but interesting regardless.

Also, I suspect there's an environmental theme in DA that's just as pointed as Tolkien's Rise of Industry in the finite resource of the Fade- one that's only really lightly hinted at at this point, but is likely to become more clear as we understand the game universe better.   Triad magic (by all indications, the most explosively powerful in Thedas) requires a resource that is sacrificed -irrecoverably lost- in the casting of the spell.  This finite resource is the life essence of the fade component (Earth) and Mythal's in-game connection to anthracite coal is hard to imagine as accidental.  Even non-Triad magic literally draws upon the "soul" of the living world.  It is Change at a cost.  Magic enacted today lessens what is available tomorrow.  Though the underlying reason differs significantly, as with Tolkien, Thedas' decline and transformation into our mundane modern world seems to be both tragic and inevitable.

...with the decidedly more upbeat theme of Choice presented as a less flashy but infinite type of "magic", so it's not all dystopian doom and gloom.  Magic was too easy, as Fade-Eden was too easy, but some precious measure persists in the modern day, the great War goes on, etc.

So tell me about csodaszarvas...   @w@   The only extensive wikipedia entry is in Hungarian, which is killing me a bit.  The halla as guides of the Dalish certainly seems like an apt fit, but is there any additional connection to the significance of a golden halla visiting in times of great need, or do you think that's overlapping mythology tacked on from elsewhere?

Forcing the three of them to work together will lead to another civil war. The best outcomes seem to be either Celene+Briala or Gaspard+Briala.

Celene and Briala sounds toxic.

If you reconcile them, then they both accept/forgive each other (or at least are willing to work together) and become a bit less ruthless, so it works out pretty well  :)

So I heard a song I am desperate to see a fan video to. I can do a fair bit if editing so I could do it myself but I don't have video from my game to record for footage. Xbox one only allows 30 second videos.

So I was wondering if a) anyone would let me use their raw game footage with lots of credit, or B) someone would just save me all that hassle and make one for me who likes to do them?

Song: Sofia Karlberg version of Crazy in Love. I'm obsessed. I'll link once I get to work.

I liked Briala better in the books, I don't know If I could ever put my finger on exactly why but basically I think it boils down to her voice actress who takes me out of it completely.

Ok. So I don't want to make this into a huge debate, but I'm honestly curious about what people don't like about the PC controls. I'm ok with 99% of the default, and have only tweaked a few of keybinds. Is it the movement of the character itself that is imprecise with the controls, or something more related to how the hotkeys mesh with each other when you're trying to fight 4 bears and a Mabari at once?

I kind of feel like I'm in a minority whenever people talk about hating the controls for DAI, or really any other Bioware game. People never seem to expand on the reason other than "it's awful." :/

Personally, I'm okay with the PC controls. I don't hate anything about them, but I do wish they were slightly more... made for PC and not ported from console.

  • Like how there's only 8 skill slots on the hotbar.
  • Or the fact that the main attack is bound to the left mouse button (I'm used to being able to hold down the left+right MB to move in a lot of my games).
  • The over-simplified inventory and lack of more detailed item and stat descriptions.
  • The camera for tactical view is horrible (though someone's already made a mod/hack that fixes that, but I'm not comfortable enough yet to start modding my game).
  • The fact that you can't go from menu to menu without exiting whichever menu you're in first (like opening your Inventory and being unable to immediately switch to the Character page - nope, you gotta close the Inventory menu first [unless I'm missing something]).

But yeah... I dunno. The UI is acceptable, but it's quite obviously meant for consoles.

As this is the Solas thread should we make a group to post the semi academic and the worst of the tin foil theory that ties in to it? A lot of the stuff we do theorize about may or may not stem from a want to understand Solas but we might bug people if it ends up completely off topic? I'm happy to stay here and equally happy to create a theory group if that would be more considerate to people who don't want to read wall of texts with crazy and/or academical theory.
