Every time I hear "Hedge Mage" all I can picture is Solas attacking the enemy with animated topiary sculpture minions.

Yeah. I'll probably wind up writing this and then looking back at it once we know Solas' voice and everything and i'll be like "What is this crap?" 

 

Heh, that's what held me back for so long. I mean, how do you write PRE-GAME fanfiction? And the key is... you sort of don't. LOL I've been trying to keep things incredibly vague when it comes to Solas, and fairly neutral and polite tones. Just gleaning what precious little tidbits of character peaked through from Patrick's interview.

 

That, and just resigning yourself to the fact that it's gonna be crackfic, basically. When I stopped trying to be too serious about it, it became more fun. Something to do to tide us over to the game, when the real fanfiction can start. LOL

I'm totally gonna get in on the fanfic writing, but it may wait until the game comes out so I actually can get to know the characters, AND I have to wait until after the summer as I'm trying to finish my novel over July/Aug.

 

But, I'm so tempted right now.

Speaking of apostates, it seems the trevalyan mage was sent to the circle at some point. I wonder if we escaped it at some point or if the blast killed everyone that was watching him/her. I look forward to seeing how Solas looks at mages who were in the circle. Maybe he will reveal how he taught himself as a way of saying "the circle is not needed."

Calling someone a hedge mage is not an insult. It is merely a mage that has not been taught the standards of magic by someone else. Solas is a hedge mage because he is self taught. 

Edit: They are just considered to be not proper mages which is someone who has not been taught in what is considered a proper way (the Circle).

There is two lore definition of hedge mages I've read.

One any mage without official training.So seers , shamans etc...

And the other , it's mages who can't control their magic and it manifest in strange ways.(they can't cast a normal fire spell , for example)

 

I believe one is used as a broad term by the Chantry and Circle to look down on other mages.

And the right technical definition is the second.

I think Solas might be considered an hedge mage for the Chantry standards, due to his self-teaching method of learning, but I don't think he actually is one, since he's able to use the Common mage spells.
If anything, I'd say this shows his talent, since normally mages left to themselves won't reach the level of ability in magic that Solas has.
