EW EW EW.

 

I peeked into reddit and saw multiple huge walls of text ranting about how all solasmancers are just twilight fangirls who get off on mary-sueing and wolf god sex (well... they might be right about the wolf god sex). I immediately went "NOPE" and ran back here to the blanket fort. 

 

It's like, you get this amazing tragic and complex character and all you think of him is "racist fade nerd"? At this point, I'm willing to rename the game into DA:Solas because really most of the tears (and whoo boy are there tons of them) aren't for Lavellan, they're for him. I'd like to think my girl (well, me really) isn't the kind of girl who sinks down into death because a man doesn't love her. She has the inquisition to run, the world to save, Dorian and Bull to get her really really drunk, ect. But all she knows is that her lover left. We have all this meta knowledge of who he really is and how he's suffered alone (considering his greatest fear, this just kills me). Thanks to that PW interview, we know how close he was to coming clean and how close he was to GIVING EVERYTHING UP. That's HUGE. Personally, giving up a lifelong cause just about tops any other romantic gesture I've ever seen in video games (except maybe Alistair sacrificing himself for you). 

 

I don't know. To liken the Solasmance (which feels almost spiritual) to "LULZ well fangirls just like him cuz he's a god" makes me feel really sorry for the people who aren't willing to see that "It's More Complicated Than That".

I had the same problem. Actually, I'd already been spoiled that Solas would leave at the end of the main story. I was just looking up proper builds for my companions because they kept getting their butts handed to them, then that person felt the need to slip that in there even though it wasn't directly combat-related. Then I skimmed the non-spoilered portion of TV Tropes because I was obsessed and it was taking me literally weeks to buy and then play the game, and the "Did You Just Romance Cthulu?" tag made clued me in to him being more than he seemed. (That one was my fault.)

 

I started to suspect something supernatural - a spirit or maybe even an elven god - but wanted to be surprised by the end of the game. After playing through the Fade at Adamant ("Here Lies the Abyss"), I got curious about what Nightmare had said to him in elven. Looked it up on Youtube, and the first bleeping thing the woman says is, "Solas, a.k.a. The Dread Wolf." And I thought, "YOU ******!!!! Was it REALLY NECESSARY to just blurt out his true identity in the first three seconds of the video?? You couldn't just translate what the bleeping spirit said, you had to go and give away something so huge?"

 

What is with internet people wanting to give away Solas' identity where players wouldn't want/expect to learn it and ruin the surprise?

 

This is why I don't fully know how my Lavellan would react to being dumped or learning Solas' identity. I don't know how I would, since I got it spoiled, so I knew it was coming, so it diminished my emotional reaction. *sigh*

 

Exactly! I have absolutely no idea my Lavellan would have reacted to the whole end thing after it getting spoiled. I had to create this whole head-canon to work around it and explain how Lavellan might have known, and...*sigh*. The game's only been out for a few months, why must they spoil something like that? T_T I kind of had the whole 'Solas leaving' spoiled in a conversation too, but that wasn't too bad because I wasn't sure if he would still leave if you were in a romance with him (oh, such naive optimism ).

 

...Man, I'm slurring on my words like a drunk lol (thank god for spell check, I totally spelled optimism 'optimisim' haha)

and I had the fade kiss , did his quest, talked and made out with on the blacony, danced with him at the place, I take him everywhere and I egusted all opptions when talking to him.... i know more is meant to happen, but ... i get the feeling that I missed something... 

 

DID i miss something, or is there more later?  and if so, how do i trigger it?

I don't think it was phrased silly at all, it perfectly describes my Inquisitor's emotional state    and they make her SMILE T_T I had to try and imagine its one of those things where you're just so upset that you start laughing then crying like a baby or something XD

Nope, you didn't miss anything. You get the final romance scene after What Pride Has Wrought.

Just the fact that I and so many others have had to ask this, makes me think that the Solasmance is confusing and missing some content.

Eh. I think the twilight thing is funny. We have made jokes on here relating to it. I can see the perspective of people who make some parallels for twilight. I may not have read the books and only watched one movie. People say twilight because it's one of the most notable cases of "Powerful Being falling for a Mortal" in pop culture. In twilight, edward at the beginning tried to keep vampire thing a secret and sucked at it. He watches bella while she sleeps just like Solas watching you while you sleep when studying the ancher. Edward always pushes Bella away because of the danger he could cause, just as Solas wanted to push Lavellan away. Edward is immortal and acts like from a different time, Solas is immortal and also acts like he's from a different time.

 

And yes, the racist fade nerd is pretty close, though prejudice is closer. And those things you pointed out? Not important if you didn't romanced him. It's as big of a deal as Cassandra fans fawning over her being a Divine. 

 

Also I think Alistair is lame at jokes and whines alot. Zevran rules.

Easy way to get around this, it's a war table tied cutscene, so wait until after the breakup.

 

Then you can canon that the gang took you out for drinks to cheer you up after getting dumped.

Wicked Grace is better in the Fade.

...I think you kind of missed my point. Or rather I didn't articulate my thoughts well enough since I'm sleepy

 

All those things are true yet... miss the point entirely. It's just such a shallow skim of his character to boil him down to "racist grandpa/wolfgod" when Patrick Weekes has crafted such a complex narrative. 

 

I totally agree with you on the Alistair thing btw. His romance is cute and fluffy IF you're fem!Cousland and/or roleplaying a character who is used to being in charge. Zev ftw!

I think I'd put in very thin black lines if possible

 

A few pages back there was some comments on his use of past tense after the break up, 'once cared for' 'what we had' etc... I just think of what he said at the start, 'posturing is necessary' and remember that he did manage to become a trickster Legend so is really good at telling lies.  We know he loved Lavellan, and it is not possible to just turn that off.   If he let the truth show, he would be undone, he has to be cold or the breakup would crumble.  Also I don't see how taking Flemeth's power would change how he felt.

He has less content in general than the other companions.  It's not just romance content.  It's also easy to burn through all of his conversations not long after getting to Skyhold.  I always make the same mistake with Dorian as well.  I really need to stop talking to Dorian so much, long before midway he has nothing left for me, once his personal quest is finished.  

 

I think the biggest culprit in causing confusion is the assumption that all of the companions have equal amounts of content and dialogue.

 

In regards to Solas, I think it's deliberate.  Whether you romance him or not, in light of the reveal of his identity, they might have decided to hold back on letting the players know too much.  Plus people already feel like they were betrayed and he was just lying and manipulating the Inquisitor.  More content might have made that reaction even more strong.  

 

It sucks, I know.  Especially if you like Solas.  And I like Solas.  Not because of only the romance, I just enjoy the character in general.  The lack of a repeatable fluff scene doesn't bother me too much.  I know that if I want a romance that has more of that there's multiple options in the game.  Cullen's romance was very satisfying in that regard.  I haven't finished Iron Bull's romance yet, but I like that one too.  I like variety, and when you make everything equal for every character so that it's fair and even, I dunno it doesn't always work as well as you think it would.  The Solas romance isn't for everyone.  I know there are folks that look at us that repeatedly choose Solas for LI like we're nuts.  Why on earth would you go back again and romance the guy that ruins your face and leaves you?  He has less content and no fluff scene, gross what a terrible romance!  I know right, we must be off our meds!  Yikes that paragraph got away from me, sorry.

It's funny, there are actually a lot of songs in twilight that are about Edward and Bella's relationship that kind of work perfectly for Solavellan XD I can definitely see the similarity in their relationships. If only they ended the same as well T_T the way the Solavellan relationship was concluded would be like if they'd ended Twilight at New Moon. 

 

Aww, I always thought Alistair was funny XD but I won't argue that Zevran rules. hehe.
