Oh there's no way you're only person who doesn't care for the "wolf sex/god" thing.  I'd be over the moon if he weren't FH.  It makes me want to bash my head repeatedly into my desk whenever I see someone miss the rest of his character and latch on to only that... and then cry.

This so much.  It's why I'm so against the whole 'Solas is the Maker/Shartan/Falon-Din/Anders/The Flaming Knicker Weasles That Plauged Andraste' thing.  For me the most important thing is that Solas is Solas.  The fact that he's also Fen'Harel, that's an enjoyable side benefit of his character.  It's why I tend to stay far, far away from most fanfiction as I'm not a fan of the way Solas' 'god' attributes are played up (I also subscribe to the 'gods were powerful mages and didn't body hop' theory.)

I am almost positive that Gaider answered this question at some point, but I cannot remember if it was here, in the old BSN or on his tumblr.  I can have a hunt around but I'm not likely to turn up much.

And yes, Weekes wrote Solas.  He also wrote The Masked Empire which adds a great deal to elven lore and the Orlasian court and he wrote most of Here Lies the Abyess (which happens to be my favourite of the main quests).

My favourite main quest is What Pride Had Wrought, that's so ****** tragic right?

Well, to me it's actually more disturbing than a case of loathing. I'm interested in why these things are prevalent and I feel that this reflects a real problem. I get worked up about it because I want to be able to get to the heart of what we reflect as a society and I want to find the niches where I can slip in and put forth new ideas.

I know the feeling of irrational loathing towards pop culture, and I know that particularly in certain circles it's difficult not to get into that mindset in a way that it becomes a permanent feature of your outlook. Yet, it was exactly this environment that first flatly told us "no pop culture bashing" which got me thinking - it's just not something you can back up with acceptable evidence, academic research and thoughtful insights, that attitude.

After this, cutting away the extreme opinions (and this also includes the glorification of academia) it really comes down to what your angle is. My angle is primarily a literary psychology hybrid, and from that point of view things like Twilight are disturbing. This is not true, however, of a lot of different areas of pop culture. A lot of it I like and accept, a lot of it I have big issues with. I suspect it's the same for anyone, yet my point is that just because it is in a spotlight and people love to hate it as much as others love it, that does not negate the possibility of valuable arguments and conclusions to be drawn from that element.

I..love you, I think we have a same page situation going on here ;)

You lot are being compared to "Twihards"?

I'm not that keen on Solas and I'm disgusted at this comparison.

Funny for me. I like the twilight parodies relating the Solas. I say take whatever you dislike and turn it into a joke.

I find that if it's noticed that a sizable amount of women are into something or a character, eventually they will be made fun of for it in some way. Usually called "fangirls" or "irrational" and often compared to the Twilight fanbase. Solas is that new character for Dragon Age. It's been Alistair and Cullen in the past and I saw similar statements about Garrus fans.

It's one of those inevitable things that I've always seen happen in multiple fandoms. Best not to let it bother you.

I usually have the same attitude

Yet... I guess Twilight is a sore subject for me.

I suppose it's a psychological/pride thing; the DA universe, I consider it to be cool.

Twilight... not so much.

EW EW EW.

I peeked into reddit and saw multiple huge walls of text ranting about how all solasmancers are just twilight fangirls who get off on mary-sueing and wolf god sex (well... they might be right about the wolf god sex). I immediately went "NOPE" and ran back here to the blanket fort.

It's like, you get this amazing tragic and complex character and all you think of him is "racist fade nerd"? At this point, I'm willing to rename the game into DA:Solas because really most of the tears (and whoo boy are there tons of them) aren't for Lavellan, they're for him. I'd like to think my girl (well, me really) isn't the kind of girl who sinks down into death because a man doesn't love her. She has the inquisition to run, the world to save, Dorian and Bull to get her really really drunk, ect. But all she knows is that her lover left. We have all this meta knowledge of who he really is and how he's suffered alone (considering his greatest fear, this just kills me). Thanks to that PW interview, we know how close he was to coming clean and how close he was to GIVING EVERYTHING UP. That's HUGE. Personally, giving up a lifelong cause just about tops any other romantic gesture I've ever seen in video games (except maybe Alistair sacrificing himself for you).

I don't know. To liken the Solasmance (which feels almost spiritual) to "LULZ well fangirls just like him cuz he's a god" makes me feel really sorry for the people who aren't willing to see that "It's More Complicated Than That".

Well you have to admit there's an element of that in the fandom, hence why some of us have avoided some/ a lot of the fanfiction that's being traded around. I even got heebies from one that was popular on this thread because I dislike the Fen'Harel lounge lizard vibe so much. I mean, I like that Solas having been a bad boy and a player in his youth is part of his character, but he looks on that time with regret and sorrow. He's grown up and he's a much richer character now, why focus on that time in his life for lustful fantasies? Then there is the kink stuff which is as dull as cold potatoes in my book. It's so much hotter to explore a character in a realistic way and not just made-up extremes.

Whatever, people like what they like. What reddit says concerns me about as much as Sera yapping would concern Solas.

I used to be real vocal about the books that I saw as lowbrow..then I wrote a book. It took almost two years to do and I put so much work into it. It actually made me gain respect for writers. Even if a book is terribly bad, it takes a whole lot of work and dedication to make something out of a blank page.

Also, I would hate to ward off potential readers of my own by crapping on something they actually love. It's the same as movies, I think. I love some movies that are known as "some of the worst movies to ever be created." but there are two reasons I go to the movies, 1) To experience some great moving story that leaves some lasting impression on me and 2) To simply be entertained.

I only watched the first Twilight and read the first book. It wasn't really my style but I know it works for some and I'll just leave it at that.

As someone who has little to no interest in the twilight books [but did watch most of the films in connection to riftrax]...it is time for the twilight circlejerk to come to an end. I somewhat dislike the notion that girls and women aren't capable of distinguishing fiction from reality. Like anyone who reads twilight is now doomed to having problematic relationships for the rest of their lives.

Its like saying reading a crime novel is going to make you a criminal. Sure, twilight might be the junk food of literature, but at least people are reading. One day maybe they'll pick up a good book. Or they'll decide to write their own book or fanfiction.

Whether or not Solas romance is 'twilight' romance is a null point. You can certainly critique things you don't like about the particular romance. I could certainly say a few things that turn me off from Bull's or Blackwall's. But when you get to the point that you're saying: 'all fans of this romance are X', you've destroyed your argument. It just comes off as someone who is really committed to their romance, and is incapable of imagining someone else wanting to experience something different.

Also remember that this sort of generalizing is not limited to Solas romance. I think just about every romance has had something nasty said about it towards their fans. [IE; Sera/Iron Bull is abusive111, Cullen/Josie is just for disney babies, ect ect.] Just be aware of it, laugh it off, and make sure not to respond by making similar comments.

TLDR; Critique is fine, generalizing just makes you look silly.

Ah, not the Twilight comparisons again.

It's less my dislike for the story and more my absolute hatred for that ghastly excuse of a 'female protagonist' that bothers me. By comparing my Solas romancing to Twilight, it sounds like they are saying my Lavellan has similarities to Bella.

Niamhminus_zps6931d5cb.png

Sorry to any Twilight fans. By all means, like what you want to like and screw everyone else.

I read the first book because I'm of the "don't knock it until you have tried it" mindset, but I hated every word of it. Mostly because of the fact that Bella is nothing more than a self insert character and I could never, or want to be like her. Bad female 'rolemodels' is why all my idols have been men and partly why I've grown up wishing I had more Y chromosome.

Ah, but in short, time for my go to reasoning behind why I dislike something.

Heh. My dislike for Bella is so strong, the mere suggestion that my quizzy could be like her makes me want to go running back to playing as a man. D;

Eep. Yes. Enough on that. Back to Solas.

I'm sorry but I just had to share this. x'D

This...This make everything better. It's so beautiful.

Finished my Lavellan playthrough, and I feel conflicted.

Despite the intense drama and the depth of the scenes I got with Solas, I find I've been spoiled by my previous romances.

The ending, leaving the banquet felt very... empty to me. I didn't get the satisfaction from this romance that I expected, not nearly the level of satisfaction that I got from the Iron Bull romance.

Maybe it would feel better if I was able to approach Solas for spending some time together, the way you can with all the other romances, or if there was just another extra cutscene...

If I hadn't have romanced Solas first, then I expect I wouldn't hold it in such high regard. At the moment I hold it joint with Dorian but haven't tried all of them yet(I gave up on Cullen because I hated it, haven't tried Bulls yet. Got my quizzy created for him though :D). But I do understand where you are coming from. He gets a lot less content and absolutely no closure. It's the closure that I am holding out for which helps keep him a favoured romance as it could potentially be really good.

Or, it could not. In which case I may end up removing it from my canon and Thedas heroes will start to become something of a boys club. Woe. Poor femQuizzy.

So I was mucking around with flycam today in my post-ending save. Remember that symbol we see on the walls of Kirkwall all the time? Well... I found something in Solas's room.

DragonAgeInquisition2015-01-1719-06-39-4

It looks like some sort of scroll... or a letter. With that symbol on it. One more reason to believe that symbol is used for rebellion? Fen'Harel symbol?

When I first saw it I was all "HOLY CRAP DLC???", like maybe Solas left that for the Inquisitor post-ending? So naturally I clocked back on my earliest save to confirm. Alas, it's been sitting in that bucket ever since you got to Skyhold. Still, it's interesting that he has it at all. What do you think it is? What do you think it means?

Yes it's the same symbol that's found all over Kirkwall, and is supposed to be in the shape of a dragon I think. I thought the same thing when I saw it and compared them. This one is different from the Fen'Harel symbol. Under the cut:

Spoiler

And here's the Fen'Harel symbol again:

Spoiler

If I had to guess, I would theorize the dragon one is more a symbol of conquest (given the dragon associations with royalty, power), and the wolf/fen'harel one of rebellion. Sometimes these concepts are intertwined.
