Its like saying reading a crime novel is going to make you a criminal. Sure, twilight might be the junk food of literature, but at least people are reading. One day maybe they'll pick up a good book. Or they'll decide to write their own book or fanfiction.

This is funny but that's how I got into art. I watched too much CSI, wanted to get into forensics. Friends draw anime bodies for their forensic papers, I didn't like it. So I studied human anatomy for a month to draw a more anatomically accurate dead bodies. Funny how far you could go just to prove a point.

edit: I draw the living nowadays.

But he did look like that in the future due to being caged with red lyrium. He was dying. That one rebel mage quest.

Can I just show off some shots of Solas in his tangerine/carrot robes? (These are actually some of my more decent phone pics of my TV so, YAY! xD)

Spoiler

And a shot of my (barefaced) Tala in her Dalish Scout Armor because, why not? :P

I never really got into Twilight when it was out, but...the whole tragic/can't be together romance trope is older than dirt and has been done so many times long before Twilight... Twilight is just a recent example in pop culture, so I guess we get the comparisons.  I think people who criticize it for being too Twilight-ish just haven't read or seen enough stories? Everyone always thinks their generation invented everything.  :P

Flemeth_2_zpsfff3f6b7.jpg

I think perhaps Meredith wanted to think she's like Andraste. Maybe that headgear just looks like it's cool and powerful so flemeth has it too. Maybe it's some ancient symbol of authority.

Edit: Oh, only the Flemeth pic got quoted. The original post had a pic of Andraste and Meredith looking the same.

So... when I was taking pictures of Solas in his Battlemage Mail (don't remember the exact name but it is some variant of it), Cassandra suddenly piped in about the vallaslin again.   (This must be the 5th or 6th time now. I'm keeping tabs.)

Ugh! My heart...  :crying:

As someone who has little to no interest in the twilight books [but did watch most of the films in connection to riftrax]...it is time for the twilight circlejerk to come to an end. I somewhat dislike the notion that girls and women aren't capable of distinguishing fiction from reality. Like anyone who reads twilight is now doomed to having problematic relationships for the rest of their lives.

Its like saying reading a crime novel is going to make you a criminal. Sure, twilight might be the junk food of literature, but at least people are reading. One day maybe they'll pick up a good book. Or they'll decide to write their own book or fanfiction.

Whether or not Solas romance is 'twilight' romance is a null point. You can certainly critique things you don't like about the particular romance. I could certainly say a few things that turn me off from Bull's or Blackwall's. But when you get to the point that you're saying: 'all fans of this romance are X', you've destroyed your argument. It just comes off as someone who is really committed to their romance, and is incapable of imagining someone else wanting to experience something different.

Also remember that this sort of generalizing is not limited to Solas romance. I think just about every romance has had something nasty said about it towards their fans. [IE; Sera/Iron Bull is abusive111, Cullen/Josie is just for disney babies, ect ect.] Just be aware of it, laugh it off, and make sure not to respond by making similar comments.

TLDR; Critique is fine, generalizing just makes you look silly.

Yes, agreed! And also, those movies were perfect for rifftrax. All the pausing reminded me of Touch of Satan (if you also watch mst3k).

I seem to have stepped into this thread at an odd moment, but honestly I don't see what's wrong with people reading/enjoying bad romance novels.

Agreed. Dates back past even Romeo and Juliet.

Twilight is just a very, very, very bad version... Sorry, really hate the series...)

Is there a consensus in this thread for the apparent contradiction of Solas' motivations?

By the end of the game, he appears dedicated to restoring the elven people. However, when my Male Human (thus not a romance) Inquisitor asked him, after Halamshiral, who was his people, he didn't seem that particularly invested in the elves.

According to his own words, they were a "lost cause". I could understand an elven Inquisition convincing him they were still worth saving but what about other playthroughs? Was he simply deceiving the Inquisitor?

Of course, there is also the fact after Haven he appeared concerned of Corypheus' actions leading to a backlash against the elves so, yet another contradiction.

He doesn't consider Dalish his people, He considers the Elvhen his people, who people theorize he trapped inside the Eluvians. And -that- is who he's trying to save.

Yes, I saw that. It's easy to make a Twilight/ Solas romance comparison if you dislike both and want to rant about it. But I just don't really find the comparison (or the ranting) a big deal.

The second twilight film with rifftrax is almost my favorite comedy. Every line from it is hilarious.

[Touch of Satan is also great, eheh.]

The elvhen? Would these be the elven gods?

If you are referring to ancient elves like Abelas, I would point out he said to him that his people remained (which I assumed it was the other elves) and that the elven slaves of the Imperium had to come from somewhere.

I'd argue that the person was probably trolling for a response so to p*ss off the growing Solas fanbase.  Like was said before, it's usually something that's popular with mainly women/girls that seems to be the target for such ridicule.

It obviously worked, whether that was the intent or not.

Maybe? Some think he means the pantheon, others think he had to also sacrifice a small amount of the followers along with the gods to trick them into being locked into their "paradise".

No one really knows for 100% sure, but we know that he does NOT think the Dalish are even remotely his people.

He doesn't see the Dalish/City elves as his people. Consensus is that he's talking about the elvhen.

That said, a lot of things Solas says are still contradictory. Most likely by intention to keep the 'audience' unsure what his end goal will be. Its very possible even he doesn't know what his motivations are. He just knows that he's made a mistake, and he's the one required to fix it.

That seems about right.

Except 'wherefore art thou Romeo' means 'why are you called Romeo'
