I am sorry to go off topic, but I'm terribly sad. My dog is sick and she's not going to make it.
DA:I is helping me so much in not making me think about it. Tonight I had a weird dream, I was trying to find a way to help my dog, then Flemeth came to me and offered a way out... she was going to help, but then I woke up. I know this might sound creepy, of course it was just a dream. I just wanted to share this with someone, this whole situation is driving me mad... I don't know what I'd do without this game to distract me. Reading this thread and all your theories helps, too.

Oh, and on the subject of the Pantheon, is it a general agreement that people hate Andruil? I get the feeling that because of the whole Fen'Harel sex slave thing, that Solasmancer don't care for her. Or is it something else? She's the next elven god that I am tackling and I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something that could be added to my drawing...and no, I am not going to have Solas tied to a tree in the background. Don't worry.

 

I like her.  I like hunter goddess in mythology and what she did is no different from most of what the likes of Zeus get up to in Greek mythology.  Besides, doesn't Solas say something to Morrigan about the dangers of confusing 'myth' and 'fact'?

I, too, have been pondering why Fen'Harel has two distinctly different statues: the howling wolf and the "friendly guardian", as I've come to think of them.

The "friendly guardian" statue is the one that gives you the codex entry on the Emerald Knights, right? They had wolves as companions, so maybe this type of statue represents those wolves, while the howling one is Fen'Harel

I forget where I read it or heard about it (maybe from Solas?) but it seems that she used to hunt slaves for sport.

I had thought that, too, but in Mythal's Shrine, it's one of those Emerald Knight wolf statues that gives you The Rebel God codex entry and it specifically says "Statue of Fen'Harel".

 

So, literally both types of wolf statue have his name on them, that one and the howling wolves at the Offering to the Dread Wolf shrine in Exalted Plains.

Okay, it's been a while since I've even looked at this thread, so I'm not even going to try to catch up.

 

Instead, how about some happy fun theory time?  I'm spoiler tagging these due to length, by the way.  So you can read each one individually.

 

For starters, regarding the Old Gods:

People seem to assume the Old Gods were either "keys" to the eluvians, or they were the ancient elven gods themselves.  I have a theory that instead, they were the chosen of the ancient elven gods--immortal elves who were allowed to take the form of the "divine," the dragon.

 

Yeah I know you're thinking "Hahaha, Brass, that's silly, that can't be true..."  Hang on though.

 

In one of the codex entries from the Temple of Mythal, we see reference to a "sinner" who is punished for taking the divine, winged form.  This form (most likely dragon form, but also potentially any winged form) is reserved for the gods and their chosen.  You with me now?

 

So, hypothetically speaking, each of the elven gods (or at least the Creators) might have had their own Chosen--either as an "heir apparent," or a high priest/priestess.  It would explain why there were as many Old Gods as there were Creators, even though we now know that not all of the Creators were locked away.  Also, it would explain why they originally called to the Tevinter Magisters and tried to send them to the Black City.  The Old Gods weren't seeking freedom for themselves, but for the gods that they were devoted to.  The idea also explains why the domains of the Old Gods do not quite match up with the domains of the elven Creators (i.e. the Old God of Silence, vs. the Creator Dirthamen, god of secrets).  It also may explain why the Old Gods are all said to be male--if all of the Creators' chosen happened to be male, this makes sense, whereas we are reasonably sure that several of the Creators were women.  I can't guarantee that none of the women in the elven pantheon were transwomen, but it seems unlikely that all of them would have been.

 

This idea also affects Solas.  He could have simply been Mythal's chosen (and thus not "truly" a god)--though his statuary being everywhere suggests he was indeed thought of as a god. Or, if he were actually an established pantheon member, Solas could have had his own chosen; in that case, who was this person and where is he/she now?  Or did he not believe that he and the others were gods in those days, either?  Whether he truly believes he isn't, or whether he has a grain of faith in the idea that he is, is a discussion best left for another post.

 

But, it's just a theory, take it as you will.

 

Second theory, regarding the Anchor:

People have suggested that the Anchor is holding the bearer in place, and allows the bearer to slip between the Fade and the waking world on a whim.  Something about that doesn't seem quite right, though.

 

The Anchor came from that glowy green orb that belonged to Solas (or perhaps was originally Mythal's).  Given what we know of Solas and his goals, he has a lot of interest in the Fade and the Veil, and of course we hypothesize that he could be trying to take down the Veil.  But for now, he is strengthening it, so that spirits don't get warped into demons from the pain and shock.

 

What does this have to do with anything?

 

I think the Anchor may be holding the Veil in place.  It was originally part of the orb; Corypheus wanted it separated from the orb so that he would be able to use this tremendous power for himself, and get to the Black City.  Some of Solas's hand gestures suggest to me that originally, the Anchor was attached to Fen'harel (so why did he put it in an orb?  Safekeeping?).  All of those elven artifacts strengthen the Veil, but without the power of the Anchor, it comes loose and unravels.

 

This would also suggest that the orb's original location--or the location of another orb--would be within Skyhold (due to the past suggestion that there are two, because an ellipse requires two foci).  So, either Solas woke in Skyhold, or sooner or later he's going to have to return for the orb that got left behind.

 

Either way, the shiny green orb that is now broken contained the Anchor, which is now attached to the Inquisitor's hand.  The Inquisitor did not BECOME the Anchor.  She holds it, and with it, Solas says, "the key to our salvation."  Whose salvation?  Probably, the ancient Elvhen, or elves in general.  Though Solas may truly believe that everyone will benefit from... whatever it was Solas wanted to do with the Anchor.

 

If I'm right, then having the entirety of the Anchor's power means that the Inquisitor has the ability to either continue to uphold or completely remove the Veil, though he/she will probably need to go through some extra step or steps that we don't know yet to unlock that capacity--a failsafe, if you will.  Solas needed the Anchor for whatever he's planning to do--freeing the Old Gods and/or Creators, or removing the Veil, or both, or neither.

 

We also know that, had Solas gotten the orb, we would have seen whatever the truth was.  Perhaps he would have made another Anchor, or perhaps he would have been able to remove the Anchor from the Inquisitor.

 

And for the third idea I've had, regarding Mythal:

I think I tossed this one around in the past, but I believe that the head of the ancient elven pantheon was not Elgar'nan, which even the ancient myths seems to suggest, but rather Mythal.

 

It was Mythal who kept Elgar'nan in line, Mythal who dispensed justice among the gods and elves, Mythal who maintained the peace.  Even if we also consider him as a sun-god and thus highly important for being a giver and/or taker of life, Elgar'nan's swift wrath and vengeance would have made him a poor leader in comparison.

 

Mythal's friend, Fen'harel, could indeed have been a messenger as others have suggested, or he might have served as Mythal's spy, her bodyguard, or he could even have been her chosen, and was raised up to the pantheon due to his usefulness.  Elgar'nan doesn't appear to have been jealous of Fen'harel, as he would have been if Fen'harel had been Mythal's lover.

 

We also don't hear a whole lot about Elgar'nan, other than that he and Mythal were wed, and had at least one child who also joined the pantheon.  They adopted others.  We could just be missing the stories, at this point, or it could be that Elgar'nan took a back seat to Mythal.

 

It's also telling that Mythal was murdered, and it was by people like the Venatori.  Humans from the future Tevinter Imperium?  The grasping followers of a would-be god?  People under the influence of red lyrium?  Why would they specifically choose to kill Mythal, and not Elgar'nan, if Mythal were not of utmost importance?

 

I'm thinking Mythal's murderers fell under "grasping followers of a would-be god."  They might also have been influenced by red lyrium.   Perhaps the would-be god is the source of the Blight?  Hard to say, but it speaks volumes about Mythal's importance to the pantheon.  It also explains Solas's remarks about true gods not needing great displays of power on the level of Corypheus.  If you need to kill the top god to become a god, yourself, well...

The dread wolf of rebellion vs the loyal hound is my guess.  Technically, even though he was the Dread Wolf before he was Fen'Harel, I don't think the howling wolf iconography factored in until well after Solas was reinstated to the Pantheon as the "loyal hound".  It would have started to appear in Elvhen context after he began to turn Mythal to his way of thinking, getting back a bit of control over his "leash", and then again well after the fall of Arlathan in the planted seeds of social republic in the human society of Ferelden.  (Where we see werewolf lore and howling wolf imagery everywhere.)

 

I haven't even started trying to pin down the timeline or write out the lore background behind all that, though.  So much wiki, so little time.

Yes, the wolf guardians of the Emerald Knights... that's always made me wonder if they have some connection to Fen'Harel himself, such as if he was meant to be a Protector sort of "god" or whatnot. If he was the one who gave the wolves to the Emerald Knights. Those sorts of questions.
