Playing DAI as a male Lavellan, and it's very strange hanging around Solas without romancing him. As a female Lavellan, he starts off very polite and friendly but detached, and becomes warmer, more trusting, and more passionate as you get to know him. As a male Lavellan, he starts off polite and friendly but detached... and kind of remains that way.
Granted, I haven't gotten to his personal quest regarding the Spirit of Wisdom yet, but it's strange having these conversations without flirt options. While Solas is polite and engaging enough whenever you talk to him, he still comes across as cool and aloof. He seems like he's not really focusing in on you during the conversation; that he's a little distant, distracted, or absent-minded.
When romanced, he tells a female Lavellan words to the effect of "In all my long years, I never expected someone to draw my attention from the Fade." Now that I'm not romancing him, I'm starting to appreciate how true that statement is. When they're flirting or sharing a romantic moment, he's living in the moment. He's invested, interacting, and focusing on her. He isn't just making polite conversation or answering your questions. He isn't pulling himself away from thinking about the distant past, the Fade dreams, or the idyllic future he would rather be experiencing, just long enough to have a passable conversation with you, before going back to daydreaming about those things.
It really makes me appreciate his romance all the more.
I am a bit shy for art chats. But, I am finally working on something for Solas/Lavellan. Will make sure to post up some progress when it is at a stage that can't be used as blackmail.
aw, you could just listen and watch, not everyone has a mic and others are too busy drawing to pay attention to everyone.
It's true! That was one of the first things I noticed about Solas' eyes when we got to view them up close. I wonder if perhaps it's a color unique to ancient elves? I've never seen the option available before now, but with the new CC MANY colors are options that never were before.
Sort of like the unique ancient elf skin tone that male inquisitors have access to but female inquisitors do not? Someone mentioned this in the chat earlier today, but I can't remember who..
Twas I who mentioned the ancient elf skintone that's unavailable to lady elves for whatever reason.
I never bothered using it, because even in the CC it looks... sparkly. Tielis's description of it in-game makes me happy I didn't use it, too. XD
Off topic, anyone disappointed that Morrigan went back to her DAO clothes? I mean they look nice and they're iconic, but who wears the same outfit for a decade lol.
On topic, Solas is so cuteee.
Everyone in DA2?
On topic: Solas' butt.
Wow, this person's Solas gifs are exquisite.

Regarding the Anchor - hearing that name for the Mark bugged me the whole game! Dagna describes it as a key, someone else says it's like a like needle. Those things seem to make sense because in the game you are opening/closing rifts (like a key) and physically entering the Fade (needle through the Veil). But an Anchor? Anchor to what exactly? Not sure I'm sold on the Veil itself but if Cory used the term, it's got to mean something interesting.

Lol I forgot because it didn't feel that long when you're playing it. As for Morrigan, it was indeed several years since we've seen her.
Yeah, it's a cycle of revolution. Fen'harel is the god of rebellion (thus an ally to slaves and the oppressed), but the moment he wins/succeeds, he's given over to pride (thus an ally to rulers--he plays on both teams, so to speak), because there is an inherent contradiction in the violent overthrow of rulers. You become what you overthrew. Yesterdays oppressed are today's tyrants. Today's conservatives are yesterday's revolutionaries, etc. I believe his fascination with the Quizzy, may be in part because she makes him wonder/hope if there could be another way. But it's dangerous to hope for that, because he's seen this same scenario play out and crumble so many times in the past.
This very true. There is no way to break the cycle. It's depressing beyond words. That's why most people are rebellious only in their youth. Eventually they realize there is no winning this war with evil. If we give up completely though, it will be even worse.
Solas represents the radical all or nothing approach, the inability to accept that this war cannot be won and that his mistake can never be corrected. There's still a lot of pride involved in his solitary crusade. Only he can fix it. Forcing his vision of freedom on people takes away their freedom to shape their own future, though. And as you point out, this often leads to one tyranny replacing the other. No vision will ever please everyone. There is always opposition. Cassandra is an idealist too, but she tries to change things from within. She tries to work with the system, not against it. That allows for a more democratic approach. But democracy is flawed as well for the same reason. Consensus becomes more and more difficult to achieve the bigger a group is. There really is no perfect solution.
This is an aspect of DA:I I really loved, especially as a history nerd. It's one of those sad facts of history, that the whole story can and will never be known no matter how well documented. The people who write and remember either don't care, or the story is more interesting one way or another, and that's that. Terribly sad ><
I love this about the game... right down to how the codex entries are written from the perspective of their author, and therefore might be unreliable, or biased, and to be taken with a grain of salt. Much like real history. It's like Varric says in DA2 when Hawke asks why he tells stories...stories have power, and how things are remembered ultimately has a lot to do with who tells them.
Yes, it's quite scary if we think about it. Our own personal history is like that too. Our memories are incredibly flawed. Our entire identity is an illusion/delusion in a way. Our past never happened the way we remember and our future will never happen as we imagine, either. The only thing that is ever real is this very moment. But the second we reflect on it and it runs through our filter, it becomes something else already...
Even history books are not entirely objective, they are written by people after all. Even when we don't intentionally distort the truth for some kind of purpose, our own way of thinking will influence how we write, what we focus on, what we ignore completely. And how accurate is one person's recollection of events anyway? Like interviewing witnesses, they all tell a different story. So what actually happened? Unless somebody filmed it, we will never know.
This topic makes me think of 1984. It's a disturbing thought that our entire lives could be based on false history. If nobody remembers something then it's as if it actually never happened. And lies become truth. Which begs the question what reality actually is. How can we even tell what's real and what's not? We cannot. Is everything real we believe or is nothing real? Does it matter?
If somebody believes you are a hero, does that make you one? It's somebody's reality. You exist as a hero in that person's mind, as a coward in somebody else's. Who is right?
There was a Star Trek episode in which Picard lives the entire life of a dead man in the course of a few minutes. This life was as real to him as his actual life. What exactly is the difference between both lives? What about our regular dreams? Our brains do not even distinguish between real laughter and fake laughter. We have the ability to project and get emotional about fictional characters.
These kid of questions drive me nuts. There is no answer to any of it. The Matrix and all that.

What I've really noticed while playing my male Lavellan, is how very, very sad Solas is. The romance does offset that a lot with the warm moments and all the "vhenan" talk in-between. It's difficult when Dudevellan is all oblivious, and Solas needs hugs so very badly.
No, no! Everyone totally loves youuu.

And glitter is the thing everyone loves to hate. Herpes of the craft world and all that. One you get some on you, it'll never come off.
Like.. idk Solas? Fade ******? Where's Birdy or Sashimi when you need a glitter ****** joke? xD
<edit> Ahaha, the censor put more asterisks than letter for my original word. Ahem. A synonym for sexual "lip gloss." That's what it was.
AH, this explains so many arts and crafts glitter incidents... I can't believe I never realized.
I intend to embrace this newly founded glitter fetish.

lolol. sexual 'lip gloss' X*D

I've never liked anything of Solas with hair. Preferred bald Solas every time. THIS though?! Oh my!
edit: Top of the page, this seems to happen to me a lot. Hrmm there's already a Solas picture here. Ah screw it, have another Solas!

That bothers me too! why don't you get a new outfit!! Even if you wanted resemblance of your home origins, at least upgrade it! There's a trillion tailers in orlais who could make it look however you want with better quality materials. Hell, fereldan tailers are all about craftsmanship and comfort. Everyone got a new outfit except morrigan!

Yeah, they could have kept the same look, but added some extra material to it. Kind of like how our armor looks the same and you just add pieces to it for the higher tiers lol.
Question for the lore people around here: do we have a name, or at least an accepted way to refer to the squat, creepy Cult figure we come across every once in a while in Thedas? The one with the candles, and the sacrifices, and that particularly creepy cave where the statue itself is described as feeling almost alive?
I think Liz was poking at this idea not too long ago, but I can't remember whether it's just "that weird creepy thing", or whether we have a better term from codices.
I know others have said it's a Dumat altar but I swear it was referred to as "The Thing in the Dark" somewhere and that's much, much creepier.
I am studying this Latin text about the fall of Troy (I am dissertating . . . it's fun) and the translator notes that this is "one of the most despairing books ever written." Later, the author helpfully lets his readers know that there will be "no consolation" in this history.
Don't worry, now that I've romanced Solas, I got this.
Thank you, Solas.

Yup! In the Western Approach, there's a little shrine to this creepy little guy. I think on the map it says "The Thing in the Dark" after you've claimed the landmark. *Shivers.*

The Art of DAI book has some really cool concept art of Morrigan's possible look for the game. Mostly they look like her outfit but winterized to match the climate of Skyhold a bit better. The book says that Morrigan "was imagined in several outfits designed for different climates, but ultimately her traditional appearance was favored".

It only works if you do digitally. The platform is google hangout so at the left-side should have a sidebar. This bar can include text chat and important sharescreen. the sharescreens allows you to share either your entire monitor or only a certain window program. So you require your own program to project.

I'd say the best export of the text is the Helen measurement of beauty.
