I don't know about Vinmark prison, but it reminds me a great deal of that painting Solas does of the fade (someone provided a screen shot earlier today) with what I expect is the black City in the middle.

I feel the need to do something creative so I may make a sappy music video set to an obscure mandarin song. Maybe. The urge is there, but all I have is windows movie maker and it blows chunks.

Anyway, while I was recording some footage for this endeavor, something occurred to me. In the final battle we see this:

It's possibly been touched on before, but that is the Black City, no? On our side of the Veil?

Or is there even an our side at that time? Thinking to the stuff earlier about spheres eclipsing and all that good stuff, is it possible that when Coryphelus lifted the Temple of Sacred Ashes, we were fighting so close to the breach that the veil simply wasn't there anymore? The sky looks nothing at all like the Fade, but it also looks a little too fantastic to be the sky on the 'real' side of the veil.

If it's true, I wonder how Solas felt then. In that small space, where for a while, everything sang the same again. It may have been what he wanted, but it became twisted by the darkness/taint that Corypheus brought with him. So close, yet still wrong.

Also, regarding the topic a while back about how Lavellan just drops the orb on the ground like it's nothing; It's true. She did. But not before using the last of its power up. It seems she pointed it at the breach and emptied it into the sky. Alternatively, if the theory about it having partially charged us with Fen'harel's power before is correct, it's also possible it continued to do so once it was green and in our hand again. So maybe that's how we were able to just plain obliterate Cory.

Regardless, when the orb hits the ground, it's black and smoking. Nothing says all used up quite like turning into a piece of smoldering charcoal. And if you ask Solas if it can be fixed, he says it doesn't matter, that it wouldn't regain what was lost.

Or perhaps he meant what was accidentally stolen or used up.

He should have just told her who he was. She could have just plain passed the orb to him as soon as she Jedi'd it away from Corpheus. Dammit Solas. Why must you make things so difficult?

Ugh that sad face when he's standing at the top of that stairway though. I... can't watch this anymore. Heading back to the blanket fort.

So Solas broke up with me and it's awkward now. Every time I walk up a steep slope and fall back down, there he is like, "Oh, almost caught you!" Then he just as quickly dashes away like, "excuse me inquisitor. I did not mean to almost touch you." But I'm all, like, trying my hardest to fall down slopes now... hoping he'll catch me.

Okay, it's been a while since I've even looked at this thread, so I'm not even going to try to catch up.

 

Instead, how about some happy fun theory time?  I'm spoiler tagging these due to length, by the way.  So you can read each one individually.

 

For starters, regarding the Old Gods:

People seem to assume the Old Gods were either "keys" to the eluvians, or they were the ancient elven gods themselves.  I have a theory that instead, they were the chosen of the ancient elven gods--immortal elves who were allowed to take the form of the "divine," the dragon.

 

Yeah I know you're thinking "Hahaha, Brass, that's silly, that can't be true..."  Hang on though.

 

In one of the codex entries from the Temple of Mythal, we see reference to a "sinner" who is punished for taking the divine, winged form.  This form (most likely dragon form, but also potentially any winged form) is reserved for the gods and their chosen.  You with me now?

 

So, hypothetically speaking, each of the elven gods (or at least the Creators) might have had their own Chosen--either as an "heir apparent," or a high priest/priestess.  It would explain why there were as many Old Gods as there were Creators, even though we now know that not all of the Creators were locked away.  Also, it would explain why they originally called to the Tevinter Magisters and tried to send them to the Black City.  The Old Gods weren't seeking freedom for themselves, but for the gods that they were devoted to.  The idea also explains why the domains of the Old Gods do not quite match up with the domains of the elven Creators (i.e. the Old God of Silence, vs. the Creator Dirthamen, god of secrets).  It also may explain why the Old Gods are all said to be male--if all of the Creators' chosen happened to be male, this makes sense, whereas we are reasonably sure that several of the Creators were women.  I can't guarantee that none of the women in the elven pantheon were transwomen, but it seems unlikely that all of them would have been.

 

This idea also affects Solas.  He could have simply been Mythal's chosen (and thus not "truly" a god)--though his statuary being everywhere suggests he was indeed thought of as a god. Or, if he were actually an established pantheon member, Solas could have had his own chosen; in that case, who was this person and where is he/she now?  Or did he not believe that he and the others were gods in those days, either?  Whether he truly believes he isn't, or whether he has a grain of faith in the idea that he is, is a discussion best left for another post.

 

But, it's just a theory, take it as you will.

 

Second theory, regarding the Anchor:

People have suggested that the Anchor is holding the bearer in place, and allows the bearer to slip between the Fade and the waking world on a whim.  Something about that doesn't seem quite right, though.

 

The Anchor came from that glowy green orb that belonged to Solas (or perhaps was originally Mythal's).  Given what we know of Solas and his goals, he has a lot of interest in the Fade and the Veil, and of course we hypothesize that he could be trying to take down the Veil.  But for now, he is strengthening it, so that spirits don't get warped into demons from the pain and shock.

 

What does this have to do with anything?

 

I think the Anchor may be holding the Veil in place.  It was originally part of the orb; Corypheus wanted it separated from the orb so that he would be able to use this tremendous power for himself, and get to the Black City.  Some of Solas's hand gestures suggest to me that originally, the Anchor was attached to Fen'harel (so why did he put it in an orb?  Safekeeping?).  All of those elven artifacts strengthen the Veil, but without the power of the Anchor, it comes loose and unravels.

 

This would also suggest that the orb's original location--or the location of another orb--would be within Skyhold (due to the past suggestion that there are two, because an ellipse requires two foci).  So, either Solas woke in Skyhold, or sooner or later he's going to have to return for the orb that got left behind.

 

Either way, the shiny green orb that is now broken contained the Anchor, which is now attached to the Inquisitor's hand.  The Inquisitor did not BECOME the Anchor.  She holds it, and with it, Solas says, "the key to our salvation."  Whose salvation?  Probably, the ancient Elvhen, or elves in general.  Though Solas may truly believe that everyone will benefit from... whatever it was Solas wanted to do with the Anchor.

 

If I'm right, then having the entirety of the Anchor's power means that the Inquisitor has the ability to either continue to uphold or completely remove the Veil, though he/she will probably need to go through some extra step or steps that we don't know yet to unlock that capacity--a failsafe, if you will.  Solas needed the Anchor for whatever he's planning to do--freeing the Old Gods and/or Creators, or removing the Veil, or both, or neither.

 

We also know that, had Solas gotten the orb, we would have seen whatever the truth was.  Perhaps he would have made another Anchor, or perhaps he would have been able to remove the Anchor from the Inquisitor.

 

And for the third idea I've had, regarding Mythal:

I think I tossed this one around in the past, but I believe that the head of the ancient elven pantheon was not Elgar'nan, which even the ancient myths seems to suggest, but rather Mythal.

 

It was Mythal who kept Elgar'nan in line, Mythal who dispensed justice among the gods and elves, Mythal who maintained the peace.  Even if we also consider him as a sun-god and thus highly important for being a giver and/or taker of life, Elgar'nan's swift wrath and vengeance would have made him a poor leader in comparison.

 

Mythal's friend, Fen'harel, could indeed have been a messenger as others have suggested, or he might have served as Mythal's spy, her bodyguard, or he could even have been her chosen, and was raised up to the pantheon due to his usefulness.  Elgar'nan doesn't appear to have been jealous of Fen'harel, as he would have been if Fen'harel had been Mythal's lover.

 

We also don't hear a whole lot about Elgar'nan, other than that he and Mythal were wed, and had at least one child who also joined the pantheon.  They adopted others.  We could just be missing the stories, at this point, or it could be that Elgar'nan took a back seat to Mythal.

 

It's also telling that Mythal was murdered, and it was by people like the Venatori.  Humans from the future Tevinter Imperium?  The grasping followers of a would-be god?  People under the influence of red lyrium?  Why would they specifically choose to kill Mythal, and not Elgar'nan, if Mythal were not of utmost importance?

 

I'm thinking Mythal's murderers fell under "grasping followers of a would-be god."  They might also have been influenced by red lyrium.   Perhaps the would-be god is the source of the Blight?  Hard to say, but it speaks volumes about Mythal's importance to the pantheon.  It also explains Solas's remarks about true gods not needing great displays of power on the level of Corypheus.  If you need to kill the top god to become a god, yourself, well...

So I've now abandoned my previously beloved theory of Old Gods=Elven Creators in favor of this one.    Also agreed with the Mythal being leader thing. If Elgar'nan was the 'leader', I figure it was a very close race between him and Mythal.

I read a short fiction story in high school based in the Victorian era. Apparently cucumber sandwiches offered by the hostess of the household were used as a sex euphemism during conversation. I don't know why that cucumber comment made me remember, but it did. Apparently way back in the Victorian era people would use the topic of food if they wanted to talk about sexy things.

 

And on that note: what foods would Solas use as sex euphemisms for flirting? >.>
