Just saw someone describe Solas as an 'awkward nerd'. I get the nerd reference (with reservations) but do not see him as awkward. He comes across as confident and self assured to me. He's firm in his convictions, from seeing spirits as people to helping the weak, and doesn't seem to care what others think of him. I remember some dialogue between Dorian and Vivienne mocking him for looking like a hobo; he didn't care, didn't even bother to respond. He has bigger fish to fry than his fashion choices. His silence made them seem petty. At any rate, does anyone else see awkwardness in him?

ETA: Almost forgot, when I hear Solas and awkward in the same sentence, my mind flashes to the scene where he lights the brazier. His movements, expressions and voice just ooze elegance and confidence.

I can see him a nerd, I guess, but awkward no. I also found him to be confident and smart....However, I think that is what made me love his character. I am one of those odd people who are completely attracted to smart people! My husband is a nerd and extremely intelligent.

I guess it all boils down to him being somewhat hesitant during his romance scenes (and he has a very good reason for this!), as well as him being a fish out of water when it comes to modern Thedas. One could see this as awkwardness, although there's much more to his behaviour.

Edit: as said above, just take him to the Winter Palace and see how "awkward" he is. /sarcasm/

How was he awkward at the winter palace? He seem confident on what he was doing. He knew what role he should play, possibly took the name of elven servant on purpose to let the nobles' guard down. If you asked for a dance from him, he knew it wouldn't win the inquisition favors. Only asking when your mission was over.

I read his first two romance scenes as holding back initially for good reasons as you said. But, when he finally let go, oh boy, awkward he was not! His first two kisses were demanding and passionate. I could really see what kind of lover he could be if he would let the romance happen. During his final romance scene, he seemed very at ease and confident until he changed his mind but, wow, he still delivered one hell of a kiss!

And, yes, he's very cute at the palace! lol

That was probably me.

It was about Varric's comment about how his favorite villains are the ones at your side the entire time, yes?

To clarify, I was referring to how he tries to come across. Completely confident in magical theory, as we see in the Prologue. Says that he doesn't deal much with people and tries to go for the hermit routine, but it doesn't quite work to anyone who pays attention. (Does this mean the only time Solas is really awkward is when he's too smooth for someone trying to be awkward?  )

So, yeah. I concede all of your points. Basically I see Solas as confident to a much, much greater degree than Vivienne or Dorian. It's like you're dealing with the protagonist of the much higher stakes prequel game. He's seen and done a lot more than us. And probably handled himself much more smoothly than most Bioware PC's would have.

That being said, if you catch him in a direct lie and press him, he gets a little awkward and throws out the 'I saw it in the Fade and you should talk about something else  <_< ' routine.

*shrug* I don't put as much effort into my non-Solas thread posts? :P

Um... it was sarcasm. I didn't want to call his behaviour at the WP awkward. If anything, it's the opposite  ^_^

haha, yes I believe it was you! You're right, he does fumble when he's trying to cover up his past or how he knows so much! He doesn't flat out lie very well; he's much better at evasion and omission.

I'm reading through the Patient Observation codexes, and I never noticed this before:

Any ideas what that could be?

The 'grey' is refering to the Grey Wardens and 'too many eyes' is the Nightmare demon.

I remember the first time I played that quest.  I totally took him to Halamshiral because I wanted to annoy the nobles by bringing my apostate nerd boyfriend (to dance with my apostate nerd Inquisitor).  When he had That Line I did an actual spit take.  Then had to reload the save to check that, yeah, I heard that right.

The Inqusitor isn't saying that they're grey.  She's saying 'grey wardens.'  It's just coming out in fragments.

Are you referring to Cole's wonderful little dig at Blackwall during banter or to why are the Grey Wardens called the Grey Wardens? :)

The most likely answer would be that griffons, the symbol of the Wardens and their best weapon against the Archdemons, are usually grey in color.

Or because they are morally grey. Neutral.

Gryphons were grey? Did they pick the color because it's a rad color or did they run out of metals after a century of blight so all they had in hand were iron swords?

Or because they are morally grey. Neutral.

Ideally, yes. That's what they strive for.

You mean there'd be another walking around God somewhere out there? After our (mine) Solas!   :o

That's a rather disturbing thought.

Just a quick thought; imagine the triangle drama that could create  :P

We know Mythal is also stirring and talking to people in their dreams. Hence why I thought the "Thin Scratches" guy might have been hearing a voice as well, and he's feeding him revenge fodder against Fen'Harel. If you haven't read The Masked Empire, it ties into what happens there.

responding to old posts as usual... :P

As everyone says, it is because of some of the concept art, but personally, I just cannot imagine Solas ever having long hair like that.  I could maybe imagine a shortish mohawk, but long dreads? nope.  The art posted is very well done, but I don't see Solas, just nice artwork of an elf guy.  I also think the hair colour given is often too dark.

Yeah, since the artists said they discarded those early concepts, I don't see them as "young Solas." Anyway it doesn't do anything for me to depict Solas younger, since I like him older. To each her own, obviously.

Personally, I'm with the team that believes that this(Fen'Harel's mortal enemy) is who Felassan was working for.And his last sentence  in the book was going to end with "Fen'Harel" instead of "you",something that was going to displease the individual in question. I'm leaving it out of context just in case there are still people who haven't read the book. :)

My interpretation is that this is the god whose vallaslin Felassan wears, but he's working with Fen'Harel now, hence why the other entity is stalking him. And my guess is that it's Falon'Din or Dirthamen.

I thought the "Thin Scratches" codex was another breaking the fourth wall joke.  The mysterious clicking noise?  Listen to a keyboard, a mouse, or a controller... :P

This is my canon young Solas. I just love the hair style. The hair in the front makes him look extra playful. Also, remember that he is a redhead.

tumblr_nglxq0OVUq1u11n6xo1_1280.jpg

http://falsesecurity...t/105242675519/

I think his hair would be a slightly darker red but yesssssssssss. This is my favorite drawing of him with hair.

Could try to take some if you had an idea where to find a good sampling of it? I run the game on ultra on PC.

Uhhhmmm... you can try getting a screenshot of the note Felix gives the Inquisitor when you talk to Alexius in Redcliffe? There's a split second where its the only (and biggest) thing on screen, and we know what it translates to. It'll be easy to tell if it's just gibberish or if it's actual writing using something that already has a translation.

Cause it kinda is more oc.

Sorry to say, but IMO, there is no such thing as OOC when it comes to the Warden, the Inquisitor, or even Hawke. They are what the player makes them, and while there are restrictions to just how unique you can make their personalities in-game, nothing is truly canon regarding them. You might not see your Lavellan(s) as being a dom, but other people are perfectly justified in seeing their Lavellan(s) that way.

But why are grey wardens grey?

B-because... I don't actually know. Probably just because they're referred to as the Grey Wardens, but I don't remember what the Grey is supposed to represent, if anything.

Also, people say the "many eyes" thing is a reference to Solas but y'know... the Inquisitor sees the Nightmare demon and its little terrors as spiders, so. I think that's a reference to the spiders chasing them out of the Fade.

Hmm. From the wiki.

"Warden legends sing of their leader Carinus, and the sacrifice the founders made as they tried to save the world while their families perished. It is thought that Nakiri of the Donarks was the one who first suggested imbibing the blood of the darkspawn, as his people were known to consume the blood of their enemies to absorb their power. Tevinter mages in the group added to this knowledge, and it is said elven slaves also contributed ancient knowledge from Arlathan. This was in return for being treated as equals in the Order, and with the intention that, after the Blight was ended, they would concentrate on freeing the elves. The Joining symbolically cut their ties to all worldly concerns, in order to dedicate themselves to fighting the darkspawn. They called themselves the Grey Wardens, and would accept anyone, no matter their race or background, without distinction if only deemed suitable to join the Order.

The Grey Wardens first appeared on the battlefield during the attack on Nordbotten, arriving mounted on griffons, plunging into the darkspawn with each Warden taking on crowds of ten or twenty darkspawn at once."
