Being an adult is just so much fun though! Unless you mean THAT kind of hippie lol  *adjusts flower crown*

I'm not too sure what you mean.  I just meant the love, peace and tolerance kind of hippie.  This thread had a bit of a repuation for being a place full of sunshine and unicorns back before the game came out.

Just to mix up the gene pool a bit I can imagine a lot of sex happening at the clan gathering and it's another reason why clans would welcome City Elves.

The dalish don't seem that uptight about sex, in DA2 there's ambient dialogue where a female hunter asks another to join her in a hunt bow not required. She does it very openly, the male hunter can be on the other side of the camp when the dialogue kicks in, and there's nothing to indicate her invitation is frowned upon.

A small group of people living close together like that means there can't be many secrets and if birth control is easily available I don't see a reason why sex wouldn't be viewed as a natural part of every day life.

Yeah, but if the Dalish did have a way to prevent pregnancy, then wouldn't Fenarial's (can't remember the spelling) mother in 2 have used it when he was conceived? She was kicked out of her clan for having a human baby.

She wasn't kicked out of her clan she chose to leave voluntary.

Yup. If real life examples mean anything, tribal societies are often very open about sex to the point where it is unknown who fathered the children. In some tribes, refusal of sex is considered a great insult. Ideas about purity didn't really come about until the agricultural revolution. Agriculture brought about the ownership of land and inheritance issues; thus, paternity became important and women's sexuality began to be controlled.

Not knocking the religion but "purity" came along with the Christians.

Probably depends on the particular Dalish elf.  I doubt it's common either, but not necessarily unheard of.  On a side note, I bet the Arlathvhen gets interesting.

True.

Hi everyone!

Long time lurker here!

But I got a funny occasion to introduce myself so here it is. I was about to do some screenies of our lovely bald elf when this WTF moment happened and I couldn't help but to share it with you guys (Thanks for the courage impulse Ajna :P ). So here it is:

https://www.youtube....eature=youtu.be (sorry still trying to figure out how to put the video directly in the post).

Oh and by the way, I wouldn't have been able to make it without guys when the "feels" happened to me back in early December. So thank you so much. Best thread eva! I love you all!  <3  <3  <3  <3

EDIT: This video is about a new version of "Dancing with wolves" I'd say XD

Well, even if my birth control argument is disproven (even though it wasn't part of my argument, just a character aside) I still maintain that its probably not common practice to go through several lovers in a clan. There has been a decent number of exclusive partners mentioned, so I'm assuming that's the norm.

Of course this is all just speculation on my part.

I'd guess that depends more on the personality and willingness of the people involved? The only barrier I can see to multiple lovers is the fact that you've got a rather limited dating pool when your clan isn't that large to begin with. It'd be like being at a very small high school. I can see a lot of serial dating happening between people in the same age range, though. And if something too embarrassing happens then you always have the option of electing to go to another clan for a while.

This also makes me think that the Arlathvhen is a time when a lot of new couples form. It's the first time a lot of these young people have access to a social circle bigger than the people they grew up with.

I can actually see there being a lot of experimentation quite early on within Dalish clans. The structure reminds me of desert Bushman tribes, where sexual activity between age-mates begins quite early (before you have to worry about pregnancy). Once a girl is able to get pregnant, however, she's married off. But since the Dalish have reliable birth control, marriage can be put off.

In DA:O Morrigan (who we can agree is very much like Solas) says how she would take the form of a wolf and wander the Arbor Wilds. I wonder if that meant anything? Even if its just a lil easter egg in the series.

Given that she learned shapeshifting from her mother, who is Flemythal, I think we can draw a link... :D

Eh, Christianity isn't the oldest religion and there are others that control women's sexuality. Naturally, religion helps prop up those values that were deemed practical due to the agricultural revolution; i.e, need to know paternity for inheritance purposes. Religion was a response to this need; not the cause.

This rather unrelated to the current topic going on in the thread, but why the general consensus is that Fen'Harel appears an actual wolf in his true form? Am I the only who thinks he possibly looks like an elf-like figure with wolfish characteristics (tail and all)?

Now if I could only get my digital pen to work...

I don't, it's as symbolic as redcliffe depicting the warden-commander was a gryphon in their own center for her deeds. Fen'Harel's animal is a wolf. Whether it's a lone wolf or a pack animal. A watchful, wary observer, or a hunter. They are mostly known for loyalty for those they love. People put meaning to animals even if in reality they're far from it. Take for an example, owls. Owls are pretty dumb compared to other animals and yet they are symbols of wisdom and intelligence.

People probably depict him has a wolf as his fade self. The fade is weird and surreal. Representations are based on what is 'felt'.

I will admit, I didn't like him at first. But,after talking to him in Skyhold and doing his personal quest, Solas has grown on me. Still no hope for Vivienne though.

I can definitely see the Arlathvhen thing. And if they fall in love and want to stay together, then one of them moves to other clan. I just can't see the average Dalish, one who has no desire to leave their clan, want to start boinking half the clanmates, then be ok with switching families.

I bet it will, that entire video still makes me laugh every time I see it.

(And whoever animates them, should animate that conversation about what clique each character would be in highschool? I listened to that when I was fighting the last, highest level dragon in Emprise du Lion and had to keep reloading because I kept getting everyone killed by laughing too much to pay attention to the fight)

I agree, i mean on a large scale. Christianity was a ground shaking religion that put the idea of purity for everyone high on the list of ideals to follow. Idk I wasnt intending a religious debate as i dont want to offend anyone.

Paternity isn't necessarily only important for agricultural societies. There are nomadic cattle herding societies where paternity is extremely important. I'd say that it's more a reflection on the division of labour. You can see control of reproduction being less of an issue in societies where women are relied upon more for subsistence (such as in hunter-gatherer societies). But the larger point still stands. Since we see no functional difference between the roles of men and women among the Dalish, then Dalish women likely have a lot of freedom in choosing who to marry, when to marry, and whether they have sex outside of marriage.
