I'm not saying that some entanglements wouldn't be messy, but I also think that culture has a very definite impact on how people solve problems. Sometimes, the way people in similar societies deal with breakups is simply by finding another partner, or putting the health of the group over their own personal relationship issues, or if none of these is a possibility then taking a bit of a break and visiting some relatives for a while. I'm not saying that emotional attachments wouldn't be formed, but that it's likely that the Dalish (as a whole) teach their kids to bounce back quicker because the health of the clan requires them to be able to quickly forget grudges.

And not just in the case of romance but the every day too like people borrowing without asking and big stuff like someone close to you dying from a hunt gone wrong. To survive the dalish have to be resilient.

The chasind too. (I hope DA4 lets us learn more about the chasind)

Heh, no problem. I probably should've said that my opinion is very much coloured by my discipline (Anthropology). I've spent years reading about cultures that have very different appreciations of sex, love, and marriage when compared to western society. Sometimes it seems very alien, but there's always an internal logic to it. So when a kind-of anthropological discussion about the Dalish started up I got a bit excited.  ^_^

FWIW I understood where you were coming from. "The way things are" is a very tricky subject, colored by things that are ingrained in us from birth and in our very language. If you have no word to express a concept, does the concept still exist? How would someone explain it to you?

There's a good bet that all the Thedasian cultures are colored by western Anglo-European mentality, even the Qunari. Bioware has to sell games to the mainstream, after all. But I like the possibility of exploring other mindsets, otherwise why write fantasy?

I'm a bit envious of some of you guys that have backgrounds in things that give you so much more to look at the game with.  I actually find the idea of you applying your Anthropology knowledge to things like the cultures in the game really interesting.  I love that stuff.  So if you ever feel like extrapolating on anything (I think I used that word correctly?) you have at least one person that will read it.

Exactly. And that's why enduring (suledin) is such a fundamental concept to the Dalish. It is thematic of their purpose of the "last of the elvhen" as well as their way of life.

Here Solas is thinking that the elves of the Dales really got overboard with this whole Wolf thing.

Tehe, taking screenies of Solas with his statues is my new favorite thing.

I prefer thinking that they didn't :P
I kinda enjoy how somehow he always keeps her on her toes immediately after saying such sweet things.. it makes him feel more mysterious and I imagine my Lavellan having these explosions of feelings inside.. like when you want to reach for something so tempting but at the same time you don't because it's like.. dunno.. spoiling it..

Or maybe I'm weird.
Solas: "I love you, my heart." *turns his back on her and leaves the room*
Lavellan: nnnnnnnh... *sighs inside* you tempting egg.. get back here now!

But aside from jokes.. to me it's like it went beyond sex.. like they had such a strong emotional connection that it wasn't even needed. Dunno.

Circle mages are discouraged from forming emotional attachments (not permitted to get married or have kids) but are allowed to have all the sex they want. It depends a lot on the environment.

Given what we've learned about the differences between Circles in various parts of Thedas, I wouldn't be surprised if that even varied between locations. For example, I would guess the Kirkwall Circle was stricter - at least after Meredith started going nutty - and depending on how the Inquisitor describes it, the Ostwick Circle might have been the kind of place where the templars didn't care to enforce the rules that much or could be bribed to look in the other direction.

With as often as the codex mentions that elves used to work in tandem with wolves, I stopped finding it surprising that they would have so many statues depicting them. It apparently used to be a thing. Which is a really cool thing that I now have a lot of questions about.

Not really a good thing, but I "work" from home, so I have way too much free time to spend reading this thread.  I don't read every single post as much anymore, but I do try to catch up.  Some days there's just too many pages to read!

Personal Headcanon: I think they did. At least once - but not then.

After that scene.  She definitely swooned.  My gal was not big on upfront affections. She was coy and flirty, but never the big stuff. She was older and was never really attached to anyone like that - it was almost always about sex.  So when he told her 'i love you' she was really overwhelmed. She didn't realize how much she meant to him and then in turn how much he meant to her.

The Neverending story is a terrible movie. As is Charlie and the Chocolate factory which I still can't bear to watch it's so horrible. Its one of the most frightening movies ever.

Wait, what?

I'm all for the free knowledge!

Imgr, why have you forsaken me?  :(

I'll fix that. Thanks for pointing it out.

Oh.

And Rivain=Moorish Spain. The Moors were also famous for their pirates. (Yes. Religious tolerance, center of learning and commerce, great weather, and PIRATES.) The most prominent Rivaini we know is Isabela, who was a pirate. And we have the Felicisima Armada, based out of Llomeryn, just off the coast of Rivain.

I usually have the thread up on my computer or my phone, and I'll skim through it, but most of the time I miss like 20 pages and I just can't be bothered to try and read them all. I wish I could because I like the discussions that go on but such is the life of a lazy lurker.
