Also, Solas didn't know what would happen with the orb but he expected the Inquisitor to be able to defeat Cory and then to be able to get a hold on the orb. So he was planning to do whatever it is that he wants to do and he knew he could not do it with her and that he has to do it alone.
I am still uncertain on why he had to absorb Mythal's power/soul to go on with his plan.. Was he like completely powerless now that his orb is broken?
Also not sure how to read Mythal's "I knew you would come". Did she know that he was gonna come after her to grab her power? But she doesn't fight or disagree, so it's kinda like they had made this agreement before? Or why would she just let him take it like that? ![]()

Are you sure that's what happens?
If I'm not wrong I've read in this exact thread that if you don't talk to him after Mythal and just go straight to Doom upon the World, basically Solas treats you like a "friend inquisitor" and tells you he'll always respect you? Someone was saying that you actually only properly lock in the romance if you do the waterfall scene.
Correct me if I'm wrong!
No, I am not sure. (Siha slightly approves)
I never "finished" the Solas romance, in no way. Either I broke up with him or I started another romance and ended it that way. I just assumed that the romance would still be locked in (because you cannot start another romance after committing to Soas on the balcony) and it events would roll out like that. If not letting him break up with you leads to him not having romantic feelings anymore, he's pretty lame going back to the friendship path, the final scene makes more sense.

Well nobody is guaranteed eternity. Uthenera's not a picnic, either, since you either need someone to attend to you at first (a melancholy job for a lover, if he has to do it), and you risk something going wrong during your sleep or being weak when you wake up as Solas was- probably because he had no slaves to tend him as others did. But all I'd ask for Solavellan is a shot at having a life and being able to do some good together. If I were Solas, I'd rather be sure of it. I'd go mad knowing that my love could die after I brought about the change (supposedly), and I'd have to go on forever without her after.
I think someone tried this and you get friendzoned because the romance is only completed on the breakup, when his tarot switches. But this question did make me think of something I find interesting. So imagine you do not speak to Solas after the Temple. He will not break up, he will just tell you "I just wanted you to know it was real" (or whatever his words) and be gone. And Lavellan will just look at him while he says it, not respond to it (no questions, no surprise, no confusion), turn around and go.

I like the idea that he's doing part of this for levellan, if that's your arc, but I'm pessimistic to the outcome.
You know.

I also don't think the "old" elves were Solas or Mythal like - after all the pantheon existed for a reason and was worshipped in a very cultist way (these slave markings...), I don't think it would be a case if everyone could be a god. I believe Abelas is a good example of a non-god elf of old times.
Besides, if you drink from the Well, Solas describes the elven pantheon as "elves, spirits or something we even don't know" (I quote from what I remember from game and yt), so I think they are definitely more than ordinary elven people to whom anyway "magic was as natural as breathing".
Hence, I agree the life possibly was more or less similar to now.
Taking Mass Effect analogy, asari may be a good comparison to explain how I see the old elves: all asari are natural biotics, though there is a difference between a talented asari biotic and a matriach.
Btw, would you be able to share some links to "the old gods anchor the mortal world" texts? Saw this topic passing by in this thread and I guess it's related to Patrick Weeks book, but as I don't have access to the book, I was wondering if there is already some good compilation on this.
I agree though Abelas might've only been in some kind of magical stasis, rather than immortal. Though who knows.
Whether the ancient life was ever akin to Solas or the old gods and elven gods (which again clarifying to everyone I don't, for a lot of the reasons stated here) there's no doubt that the fade syncing with this world, if done properly, would bring immortality. Hopefully not just to elves. Sandal suggests for everyone.
As for the texts, the only one beyond fan theory is the one I posted earlier:
http://dragonage.wik...d_Elven_Writing
This elven writing found in the Arbor Wilds is so old as to be incomprehensible.
There are whispers from the Well of Sorrows. It's impossible to understand the entire text, but certain parts suddenly reveal a shadow of their original meaning.
"In this place we prepare to hunt the pillars of the Earth. Their workers scurry, witless, soulless. This death will be a mercy. We will make the earth blossom with their passing."
For one moment there is a vivid image of two overlapping spheres; unknown flowers bloom inside their centers. Then it fades.
We assume that these witless soulless workers are darkspawn. As the Old gods call to the taint so that they'll be freed from their slumber.
There's a text in the western approach that talks about the grey wardens hunting one, and the song grew so strong that they stopped hearing it in their head. They were close enough that they could see the ground shaking in the deep roads, and collapsing tunnels.
More evidence suggesting they are the ones manipulating the dark spawn even not as archdemons:
- WE ARE HERE
- WE HAVE WAITED
- WE HAVE SLEPT
- WE ARE SUNDERED
- WE ARE CRIPPLED
- WE ARE POLLUTED
- WE ENDURE
- WE WAIT
- WE HAVE FOUND THE DREAMS AGAIN
- WE WILL AWAKEN

I have a few theories. I think it is likely he expected he might die. How or why I'm not sure, but I get this impression from the dialogue. Maybe he expected to finally pay a price with Mythal.
But I also wonder if he expected there might be a power struggle for the orb afterwards, resulting in the Quizzy killing him (or the other way around if he/she wanted to use it). It is hinted that Cory sees the Quizzy as a rival for the throne in the black city (Morrigan mentions it as well). If you do drink from the well, you could use it to try and do that. Or Morrigan might have tried.
When he says "it wasn't supposed to be this way" I don't think he really means just the final fight but the whole situation. The whole plan went down wrong, as a result of a mistake he made in the past.
I'm in complete agreement with you.
In my first playthrough, after the temple of Mythal, I was really convinced Solas he was going to die. That he expected to die. He seemed particularly gloomy after that point, though it may have been tied to the fact he had to break both his and Lavellan's hearts. But his vibe was one of things not ending well.
I do wonder what he actually expected in getting the orb back. At least a portion of the power was transferred to the Inquisitor, so could the orb ever gain it's full use again? There is (what I feel) early foreshadowing in the game when he says he won't believe the artifact destroyed until he sees the broken pieces himself. So, was he really hopeful of getting the orb back or just stalling the inevitable the whole time? Trying to right as much wrong until he had to face the music as it were.

Heh, I think you just die. TME describes the process. Eventually the sleepers learn to draw sustenance completely from the Fade, and there's a test to tell when they reach this state, after which they can be left alone indefinitely. But in TME you also find someone who had their throat cut while they were in that state. If no one tends to you, would you look like a shriveled up husk? Because I'm picturing the relationship being like this.

Can confirm. Just finished my nightmare playthrough where I did not talk to Solas after the Temple of Mythal.
Partly because I drank from the well, partly to avoid feels of the conclusion of the romance and because I wanted to get the game over with already. He was the only person I "romanced" in the game.
The final scene after Doom Upon the World, he used the respect line. Though on return to Skyhold, Leliana did remark that we seemed to be close and my Lavellan was appropriately sad.

Nothing pisses me off more than wondering what the hell is red lyrium truly and how it's underground, which as Addai pointed out once, Solas said it's not supposed to be there. The hell does that even mean, Solas?? Damn you, tell me your secrets!

This is without a doubt the most horrendous thing I've ever heard. I don't know why it horrifies me more than any other type of murder. Maybe because they are sleeping. Maybe because the whole practice is somewhat holy/spiritual.

Yeah, I doubt Solas is immortal. Er. We need a new name for immortal. He's immortal, but he can be killed. Its possible that if he was killed, part of him might be able to escape in the same way that Mythal was- but Mythal is still a shadow of what she was. I doubt she could ever truly be considered her own entity again. Similarly, whatever Fen'Harel really is would likely be lost.
For most of the game, he doesn't seem to have any additional powers beyond what a 'mortal' mage would have. Otherwise I'm sure he would have abandoned ship in Redcliffe, and not get tortured for a year. Unless he's going for some sort of oscar as far as charades go.

Anyone interested in a fun art project?
I’ve been inspired by a Tumblr thing I’ve seen several times over the last few weeks on my dash and thought with all the creative types around here it might be fun for us as a group to do.
I’m always down for finding new music, and so many of us have personal playlists that we have in mind when we think of Solas, our Lavellan, the romance, or just Dragon Age in general.
I thought we could do CD Covers of our playlists. If you search for Solas Lavellan Playlist on tumblr you’ll see what I have in mind. Whoever wants to participate will each create our own personal playlist along with cover-art and a track listing. I think it’d be a fun side project and I’m dying to see everyone’s music tastes. You don’t have to “Draw” anything, I’m certainly not going to- and it can be whatever you want.
Yay or nay?
