I think Kinloch Hold was built by the Avvar. Which makes all the magical weirdness going on there quit interesting. And it's probably why the Vints drove them out in the first place. Magical weirdness is kind of their thing.
So I'm just going to throw out a crazy hat theory that's just now popped into my head.
6625 after its founding, Arlathan is lost.
5185 years after Arlathan was founded, the Alamarri fled modern-day Tevinter and the Neromenian tribes, citing a 'shadow goddess'. They skipped through all the pleasant, arable lands of modern Orlais and the Free Marches and Nevarra, and crossed the Frostbacks, just to get away from whatever happened.
'Shadow goddess' could be Falon'din being so pretty they mistook him for a lady. Or it could be Andruil, twisted by the Void and 'wielding weapons of darkness'.
I remember the guard at Ostagar talking about how it was dwarven make from the Tevinter era, and I think that's when the Kinloch Hold codex entry popped up? Well, if not, I think I remember that they were built around the same time as they were twin towers or something? Or was there a third somewhere?

Oh, and the "shadow goddess thing"! Isn't that the spirit Solas talks about when he tells the story of Ferelden being founded just to get away from a miserable spirit?

No argument there! I think that this is one of the examples where game laws are twisted rather than directly reflected. Representing a "used" combustion resource as anthracite coal doesn't make any sense, logically. The writers probably thought it would be both too direct and lose some inferred meaning (Mythal being a more concentrated, "ancient" version of the Stone's Fade) if she and the orb turned to vapor and ash and blew away.
And yes, I got your reply! I'm still... kind of... wrapping my mind around it. @w@ Because physics. So much physics.
But thank you! It was really helpful!
I agree! I also think the game devs were not focused on making all of the aspects of the game scientifically accurate, because it's magic- so I think theres a lot of wiggle room with the theories. I just wanted to point it out incase you wanted to go somewhere with the whole "Mythal's essence being used to create something new" thing, because I found that idea interesting. I will continue to try and make scientific sense of sparkly video game magic until someone rips my arms off & beats me to death with them. Even if it makes me look crazy. It's a passion.
And oh yes, it would totally be less romantic theory-wise! Somehow, I think having Earth-Mythal "break down into small oxidized products" lacks a certain je ne sais quoi compared to "burn and disappear for the ages". No wonder I don't get invited to story writing parties.
Besides, if they made everything super-scientific there would be no room for theory-crafting! And I would be out of a hobby. Perish the thought.

Well, corndogs are actually pretty good eating and lounge lizards have spawned many fashion trends over the years.
But I had to look up yaoi hands, and OMG all I can say is that (young) people are weird. ![]()

Gah, this thread moves so fast!
Regarding the immortality discussion
What if the first elves were more like spirits in nature, kind of like Cole? Perhaps taking on more physical traits over the years is what caused the quickening - because as others have stated, physical cells naturally die. And Solas does say something about the elven gods possibly being spirits (or mages or something more).
Slightly sad panda
I listened to the Solas/Cole banter about the spirit of wisdom again. Missed this the first time around:
Cole: Your friend wanted you to be happy even though she knew you wouldn't be.
Aw ![]()
Liz's Awesome Bedtime Theories
So Solas's goal must be to tear down the Veil. Then all the magic comes back and everyone is just how they were before. Including Sandal/June and then Flemeth/Mythal can get her revenge! She's just got her good friend Fen'Harel making sure it's an even fight first. ![]()

I think you're thinking of Aeonar. Aeonar and Ostagar were built at opposite ends of the Imperial Highway in Ferelden to consolidate Tevinter power. ![]()
According to the wiki, at least, and I think some Codex entries in Origins, Kinloch Hold was Avvar made with the help of dwarves. http://dragonage.wik...ki/Kinloch_Hold
Speaking of dwarves...http://dragonage.wik.../wiki/BeregrandThis fellow is quite interesting.
I'd completely missed any mention of him up until now.
EDIT: Apparently in the RPG book, Gundaar had a massive lake of crystalline water built as a monument. Could that be what the emerald lake in The Calling was? Just another dwarven swimming pool?

Yes, that's what I was thinking of. I thought Kinloch Hold was a sister tower to both of those.
And Beregrand gives new meaning to the name/legend of Luthias Dwarfson, unless my timeline is completely off, which it usually is. I tend to play "one of these things is a lot like the other" no matter when they're from. ![]()
