About water as conductor: It's possible there's something about water being a conductor of magical energies. There's the Well of Sorrows, which as Colonel pointed out isn't unique since Lake Calenhad seems to be one big one. Blood carrying magical power also.
I can't help but think of the comparison of Lyrium to water or tears of the fade as you mention this, while also thinking of red lyrium as blood. Water and blood magic... why these two. Maybe there's some symbolism to the maker here. Jesus was pierced and blood and water came from his wound. I still like to think that some sort of "Maker" had to die to split the world from the fade, and lyrium is the end result. More or less. Byproduct.
And maybe demons can "possess" lyrium? They can possess trees. Or somehow change it. And when the fade was breached, the energy from the rift made red lyrium appear from underground, supposedly tainting it. We know there's a connection of blood magic to demons and Dumat. One even the Tevinter acknowledge, and as a lot of people know, the name is similar to the angel of silence, who has ties to demons outside of dragon age. And of course inside, dumat is rather similar, being the god of silence. As you know already.
If lyrium is something alive, and it's magical, it could be something akin to spirits. And spirits can go from normal to demonic as well.
So basically, I think that claim that the taint isn't of the fade is bullshit, at least if we assume it came from red lyrium. Which at this point I think isn't true. It might be "blighted" but I don't think it is in the same sense. How would people even figure that out?
