I like how every artist comes in here and is all like, "I just thought I'd show a sketch *disclaimer* it's not that great. It's not, really."

*shows off some awesome awesomeness*

Kurt-Crying-kurt-hummel-gleek-10950246-3

I just want to take my finger and go "SHOOSH! Just let it happen, babe. Show me everything you've got." but that might come off creepy.

Seriously, though. If any of you out there want to show me some fanart porn (all good fanart is porn, tbh), be my guest. Gimme a PM, if you're shy about it.

What would you say if someone's like "Hey, here's some artwork I did. Isn't it really well done?"

lol

I think people just don't want to come off arrogant.

I take this to be the reason Solas isn't invited to game night

That's too diplomatic, I'm not a word dancer. I rather just take the drawing and draw on it to point things out. Disrespectful, but direct. Yelling techniques at them is a gamble.

I think sometimes you have to be diplomatic. One approach might not work for everyone, and you risk shutting down quality talent by being too harsh where a more nurturing hand may have molded growth.

I don't mean -you- specifically, just using -you- in a broad sense.

To me the big problem with DA2 elves was the same one DA2 had in general: rushed development.

Plot relevant elves looked good, I liked the big eyes and yes even the nose Avatar inspired as it was because it helped them look less human with pointed ears and more like a unique race all into themselves. IMO it was the overall body proportions that needed re-thinking rather than the idea be scraped altogether.

Yeah, I liked the direction DA2 took with the elf design.  Big eyes, more non-human, I liked the DAO elves, but I thought the DA2 elves were more unique.  Some of the background elves that didn't have as much work put into them didn't look so great, but a lot of them, like the ones at the Dalish camp as well as the plot elves looked awesome. I just wasn't thrilled with the idea of making them taller.  To tell the truth, I find it easier to identify with small elves than the tall ones.

I don't mind elves tall and lean- I don't even mind elves a bit on the skinny side. But their heads never fit the rest of their bodies. It's just weird. Solas looks okay.

I think they need broader shoulders. Not to mention that for the Dalish the unusual skinny arms, especially for males are a bit unrealistic considering that they spend a lot of time hunting and doing various tasks that might involve intense physical activity.I like the fact that they're more lithe than the humans.I prefer the body types they used to have in origins tbh.Solas and the sentinels are just perfect though!

That's precious! (diplomacy at work)

It's okay to have a bit of pride in your work. I might say that I am pleased with how something I did turned out but I don't think that makes me arrogant.

For me, If I have a personal problem with my work, I have learned not to point it out. Most of the time, if I say, "God, my hands are terrible in this pic and it was sloppily done." That's when people actually look. There have been times where friends of mine have looked at something I've done and I was just waiting for the comment but they never saw anything wrong with it. Us artists are our own worst critics.

If I really want critique it's usually along the lines of, "There's something off about her face. I can't quite put my finger on it. What do you think?"

Ugh. This is terrible. I am talking about art because I can't touch my art, right now. My desktop monitor is on the fritz. :/ Ghilan'nain, it looks like you will have to wait for another day.

There's also the fact that the vast majority of people tend to be hobbyists rather than someone working professionally. Which isn't to say they don't want to get better- but that their mindset is very different from someone who is actively pursuing a career or someone who is focused on the act of making art itself. Their work is more of an expression of their feelings or fandom than it is about the actual ins and outs of composing a picture.

Unless someone is specifically approaching me for critique, I tend to only focus on the better points of a work and maybe one or two things that could be adjusted. Or if there is a glaring problem that the person didn't intend for.

Do you use a tablet? I was thinking about buying a cheap one, very cheap, nothing fancy, just something to play around with (drawing for me is little more than a boredom hobby) and wondered if anyone here had any suggestions?

4 pages!? Seriously speaking, this thread moves to fast...

And do we ever actually discuss Solas? (more than just at the side and through images)

I have a lot of mods for DAO but my favourite is TMP's elf one. It gives them the look of DA2 elves but without the bobble headedness.

And Sera too, but that would ruin my headcannon that all elves once had appropriate body types once upon a time and have over time become waifish and alien looking via some kind of genetics. lol.

Anything except wacom for budget friendly + Lazy Nezumi Pro extension for if you have shaky hands like me.

Wacom is generally the best brand to go with. The new line of intuos is their introductory set, usually costs around 75-100 dollars. You can also look for their older starting model, which was called bamboo.

I've used most of the wacom boards. There's not really that much difference between them beyond size, and some of the super expensive ones have view displays.

It's pretty obvi that things will go off topic a tad when we're this far out from release with no dlc. You guys stay more on topic than the other threads.

My HC about the elven bodytype thing is that the clan was never particularly well-fed. Being a hunter-gatherer society probably means they mostly ate game (meat with lower fat content) and whatever plant life they could scrounge around for while on the move, supplemented by halla milk/cheese. The little money they have is used to buy necessities only, no wheat or grains for bread making. That diet combined with a hard lifestyle usually leads to a lean, wiry musculature (which the body model has, just to an extreme extent).

Solas looks like a body builder in comparison lol.

Why do I have someone else's Origins character under my avatar name? Can I get rid of that?
