It's true that Solas' bald actually isn't the strangest part about his appearance. I never got why everyone laser-focused on that when his facial proportions were so strange. I actually thought that it looked weird and unrealistic when I first saw the change in his design from the first pictures we saw, because his eyes are too far up his head.

After playing the game, I just didn't notice it that much, though. I'd already decided that Solas was my favorite so long ago that frankly he could be hideous and I wouldn't really care. His appearance never mattered to me and they never do for my romance options (I romanced Garrus for Pete's sake, Solas' unconventional appearance was nothing).

His look really is such a part of him, though. That's why I get irked when people decide that if he looked like his concept art appearance or if he had hair, he would be better. I don't mind people saying they would be more attracted to him if he had hair because that's understandable, it's the idea that he as a character would be better that way. Better if he was more conventionally attractive. To each their own, but those are my feelings on the matter for most characters that have widely questioned appearances.

Soo... you showing your Solas art there and discuss drawing techniques or what precisely is it about?

I am such a hypocrite, I know! Jokes allow you to draw things quarter-assed, serious work takes time and too shameful. Like this:

I get what they were trying to do with the elf design in DA2, that is, trying to make them not look like humans with pointy ears. Like you and other people have said, Fenris and Merrill look great (and I personally think Orsino looks pretty good too). But the other elves look just look... weird. :wacko:

I do like how they look in DA:I. It's a pity we never get to see a lot of them up close since talking to NPCs no longer goes to a "cut-scene" like in DA:O and DA2 and instead, re-adjusts the camera angle to zoom in only a little bit to the person you're talking to. I wanted to see the Dalish NPCs with their vallaslin up close. :(

Oh! And the one thing I'll never get over is how skinny my Lavellan's arms are. I don't mind her being lithe, but dang those arms look so odd during that balcony scene with Solas and when she lifted that giant sword when they declared her to be the Inquisitor. I thought she was going to fall over during the latter. D:

I didn't mind the "human with pointy ears" look though. Dwarves also look like short and stout humans, but no one ever complains about that. I thought the scaling system in DAO looked fine. Dwarves were short and stout, elves were lithe and pointy-eared, humans tall and lank, and qunari huge and bronze. I guess I can respect that they wanted to make the race changes a little more fantastical in DA2, but I felt it was... uneven that dwarves remained short and stout, Qunari became more leathery and horned, and elves became sooooooo outlaaaandishly thin and bug-eyed and stylized. Why did elves have to look extra fantastical, but dwarves and qunari could look fairly the same, just the latter with thicker skin and horns added?

I actually like the long thin arms for the Elf Inquisitor though. Every time I look at her, I think she has long spidery limbs; like a daddy long-legs, or Jack Skellington. Admittedly the sword scene was a little silly, but at least it's one scene. Not as bad as DA2, where the anorexic elves that have bones as thin as toothpicks are expected to hold up their large bulbous heads, leaving the viewer wondering where they have the muscle to physically stand up every moment of their lives.

I agree too that it's too bad that most NPC conversations don't have cutscenes, so you can't actually enjoy these new designs. The only elves with cutscenes are Solas and Sera and Briala, and a few scant glimpses of minor NPCs here or there (like that Dalish recruit in the Exalted Plains who nods to you if you recruit him as an agent). If you thought you were going to see these new elf designs up close on anyone but your Elf Inquisitor (if you have one), you were wrong!

Continuing on with coloring my picture thing, but I'm not sure if it is better at night or daytime;

Daytime is warmer but nighttime is a bit more dramatic and makes the characters stand out more. I'd go nighttime.

I agree. It's really the same with me and Cassandra. I like her appearance, flaws and all because that is how she is. That is Cassandra.

I hate the pictures that make her conventionally pretty (no scars, smaller jawline, long hair) as much as I do the ones that make her too masculine.

Before the game came out, I wasn't interested in her at all. The art made her look rather unattractive. Then I saw her in game, and thought "Ok, she looks better, but eh, still not crazy about her." When I started talking to her about her background, that's when I started to fall for her. She was stoic most of the time, but was awkward and you could sense there was more to her than being a seeker. Then when I found out about the romance novels...

:wub: :wub: :wub:  All over.

I don't think I've ever liked anyone, like really crushed on anyone until I've seen enough of their personality to like them. I think that's why I'm attracted to older women more than girls my own age, or women that act older than what they are. They seem to typically have more character. And older women show that in their appearance as well, which to me is hot.

I've got a question, just out of curiosity.

A lot of people weren't interested in Solas prior to the release 'cause "eww, bald!"

For those who felt this way and romanced Solas, anyway, do you find yourself now open to the idea that, "you know what? Bald men can be hot, too!" or is Solas the exception?

I was not but I really went into the game as blind as I possibly could and make my decisions organically. If there was no romance gate I would have romanced solas on my first playthrough. No question.

@Nightsymphony

But don't you have to upgrade the console too? There comes a new one every or every second year.

A computer today isn't like ten years ago, the technology has stagnated and one can last several years.  I had my previous one for seven years, and then I simply died on me.

@Elessara

Then we're sitting in the same boat.

I'm not judging or anything, just wondering why(?) choose something that has less performance. Can't get my head around it. And when I get going on the subject I can't stop ;)

@Lucinia

Today all 'younglings' seem to prefer console and I can't understand why.

Before gaming was a PC thing, but now most games are made on console and then converted to PC and it just sucks. I'm wondering if it's beacuse they think a tv is better than a computer screen - it's not!

That's what I mean with a dying bread and being old. And thank you. (for the old part)

Alright, I'm going to drop this subject now. *dropping it*

_______

As I've said before (many times now I  think) I fell in love with Solas character for his morals and spirit, not for his name or looks.

He could have been a slug for all I care. He'd still been my choice

And lets face it, he'd been on hell of a charming slug.

I was going to say the same thing. After romancing a character with mandibles I'm not sure a quirky looking elf could ever phase me anymore.  :lol:

I guess, if I had to pick something out physically, he has a perfect upside down triangle body shape, that just screams super masculine to me.

I asked the question because I was thinking back on it and I've never met a real guy that was bald that I also found attractive and I think I understand why.

Most guys that I see with shaved heads, they are really beefy guys. Guys like Iron Bull...Not my thing.

Pretty guys like Cullen? Not my thing.

Slim guys who are kind of awkward looking? Totally my thing. Solas fits the bill. It's just him being bald is one aspect to him and I have never seen my type of guy, appearance-wise with no hair. Just an interesting thought, I had.

I don't really like seeing all the art of Solas with hair. I draw him without hair because, to me, that is Solas. I feel like when I see him with hair, it's like I'm looking at an entirely different person whom I have no connection with. idk. People are free to draw what they like, I just don't usually go for it.

Are we going to do the superior PC thing in here too?

People enjoy different gaming mediums for different reasons. I grew up playing on consoles because our PCs weren't strong enough to handle it so now I prefer it.  I also like that TV screens are bigger because it's easier to see the game.

I'll admit I've been spoiled by male elven DA companions having great hair (Zevran and Fenris), so I was a little put off when I saw the next one had no hair (like Zathrien), and surprised to learn he was a potential love interest. I figured BioWare must have felt confident in his personality to make up for his lack of conventional attractiveness though. Since I didn't know what his personality was like yet, I decided to hold off hoping or planning until I learned more about him.

Lo and behold, his personality won me immensely, and I feel his appearance perfectly suits and reflects his personality, even if some of his physical features were not ones I personally find attractive.

Sadly however, Solas is the exception when it comes to baldness. I still don't find it any more attractive now than I did before. However, I don't hold it against the person if I know the personality makes up for it. If someone sporting a bald noggin just happened to have a winning personality, I would find them just as attractive as if they did not. The baldness just becomes part of the whole package, which I wouldn't want to change.

Put it this way: I also find facial hair repulsive, but my boyfriend has been sporting an impressive mustache and beard since years before I met him. I still don't find beards attractive, and I don't find them attractive on other people, but on my boyfriend it looks fine. He's toyed with the idea of shaving a few times since we started going out, and I've honestly told him every time that he can do whatever he wants, because at this point it makes little difference to me.

For me Solas is all about mannerism rather than appearance as far as physical interest

That said, he is esthetically pleasing to look at (size, proportions, smile, etc.). Just like Garrus in a way.

I got nothing against bald man, but its not a turn on per say. Most bald man I find hot were good looking with hair too when they were younger. Some people jsut look good whatever you throw at them.

Little Mama - I've had my XBox 360 for 7 years now..never had a problem.  I will have to get an XBox One eventually to play the newest games.  My laptop I've had for 5 years..it will not play DAI. I have a really hard time playing Sims 3 on it...I know it will not play Sims 4.

I am a member of the faction that believed they weren't going to like Solas, but not because of his lack of hair. It was more or less that I just didn't think he was going to be all that interesting. I mean another elven mage... I was already not a very big fan of Merril... thought she was kind of whiney. And the apostate angle had been covered by Morrigan jn DAO... Thank the maker, we had Patrick Weekes there to show me the error of my ways. Within the first few minutes of dialogue with Solas, I was able to reevaluate and decided "okay, this guy is cool. He'd make a good bro. Or dare I say it: romance option."

To be fair, though, I didn't think I would like Blackwall either and turned out to be totally correct about that. And had the opposite reaction with Sera, where I thought she might really be cool people and then she spent the better part of the game annoying the **** out of me with her immaturity and ignorance. I was glad to be wrong about Solas, though, as I found him a character that I could really connect with.

AHHH I misread your reply (maybe)? Are you talking about the chat room?

It's just talking various topics and helping with drawings if there is a possibility. The last two times there were drawings, we bull-sh*it critique the picture if it's posted on the thread. It can be funny like the maidan in the water with excrement around her and her face? Then we make it sounds good enough that people can take the art seriously and well-thought out. Same with the lavellan elixor. Find symbolism and all that to allow it to sound greater and meaningful. Personally really fun.

Are we going to do the superior PC thing in here too?

People enjoy different gaming mediums for different reasons. I grew up playing on consoles because our PCs weren't strong enough to handle it so now I prefer it.  I also like that TV screens are bigger because it's easier to see the game.

I had my first nintendo when I was 7/8 in 1987/88.  We had a Super Nintendo, and I gave my sister a N64 for Christmas one year.  I got a Playstation when I was 17.  I grew up on consoles.  Computers were very expensive in the 80s, and my parents could never afford one.  I was in my 20s when I started gaming on a PC.  This was near the end of the PS2's life.  The last games I bought before I got myself a PC were Kingdom Hearts 2 and Dragon Quest 10 (I think it was 10).  I had the original Xbox that I played KOTOR 1&2 on, lol and Fable.  I am at the point now where I have a hard time using a controller.  Which is so strange, the muscle memory has left me.

As someone who has played both I see the pros and cons for both.  I don't have a problem with either.  I don't subscribe to that PC Master Race nonsense.  I do prefer PC, but console gaming has its place as well.  Competition breeds growth.  Consoles and PC need each other if you ask me.  Anyways not going to talk on that any further.

Solas:

I hope GDL continues to do VA in the future.  I love how BioWare always manages to find actors that make the characters feel like real people rather than just reading lines from a page.

Yea I got mine a few months after release I think. I forgot how long, but they sold too quickly the first time.

I waited in line for hours but there were people ****** waiting since yesterday and the store only had 13. I told mother I was going to run for it lol. I was ready to fight, until they told us they were giving them out in order. Plan failed.

Was super disappointed. That was supposed to be my b-day gift, but they were still sold out by the time November rolled in. They were not prepared for sale at all. Rushed to the max.

I'm not judging or anything, just ..

But you are judging. And I don't see why this is so important? It's the same old crap we've had about machines forever. Over and over again. 15-20 years ago the hype was that only Linux is cool and if you don't use Linux you're no real hacker. Then enough people went for it and it was not only to be Linux, it had to be some Linux from-scratch distribution. Riiiight, build your own mediocre kernel, that surely makes it better. Ohhh those sissy Suse users! And then only Mac made the cool kids. And so on.

Metal is better than Rock. Speed Metal is better than Metal. Noise! Now, Noise is better than Speed Metal any day, only the really cool cats get into Noise.

Don't get me wrong, I was like that too. I understand the basic motivation. You prefer some sort of music or gengre or platform or clothing or whatever and you define yourself (most of all distinguish yourself from others) by feeling good for being a minority. And then you feel the desire to tell everybody how much you know and understand and how right you are. Superior ingroup. That's fine. I suppose we never get rid of that, or at least psychology suggest so. But do we really seriously have to argue about that here? If playing via keyboard is ultimately better than playing with a controler? That there is only one way to be and that is the one preferred by a handful of real whatsoevers?

I think, I actually preferred the sexist topic if we really must go back to arguing about different taste and individual preferences.

And I assume you will get me wrong and take offense in this. Maybe it even is. I honestly don't know, I just know that I am tired of following discussions that are not based on facts but simply on taste. I think that is not fair and it makes no sense. Every coice has two sides, everything has advantages and disadvantages.

When it comes to fictional guys that catch my attention straight away, no, Solas was not one of those. I have a "type" I guess. Well, two types, really. I favor the brooding pretty boys - preferably with long, black hair - and the scruffy, ruggedly handsome types. Solas does not fit into either of those categories.

So, to me, he is an exception. He has not changed my tastes, rather he surprised me. He fascinated me. I was drawn to his voice, his stories, and his personality, and eventually he became the best looking guy in the game, and a rival for that honor in the entire franchise.

That said, he isn't the first who has surprised me like that. There have been several characters in the past who have come out of left field to claim my fangirl heart. Likewise there have been those possessed of every physical trait to net them my obsession, and they turn out to be so completely unlikeable to me in the personality department that they just end up grossing me out.

Good writing changes everything.
