For those who were asking, this is a picture I took early on of my Katori Lavellan. The look was based off of a character with the same name from a book I am attempting to write.

I know it's totally off topic, but I can't help but see parallels between letting Celene die to attempt to help the elves and letting Cailan die to attempt to help Ferelden. I'm personally opposed to neither, but one always reminds me of the other.

I can see the parallel, as well as the risk involved since Loghain and Lavellan are taking a chance on a course of action that they think can help their people. Solas' comments about the different views of Loghain from the Beyond are also interesting - from the villainous usurper to the heroic general, similar to the divergent opinions about whether the Inquisitor is acting merely in self-interest or selflessly.

Elvhen is not the same as Elven

Elvhen is more like the ''ancient elves ''

That's why.

Sorry, I don't get it. Why is it odd that he does not recognise any Elvhen features in a human inquisitor?

I love Cassandra. Probably one of my favorite female characters bioware has done. Probably won't be playing a male character for a while, but she's always my Lavellan's best girl.

I really like her conversations with Solas. They are very different in ideals, but usually quite respectful of one another.

It's not that. Bull and Dorian hook up if none of them is romanced by the Quizzy. You can hear it through party banter, so if you don't take them out on the same team you can't hear the dialogue. Some people don't like the relationship 'cause they believe Bull is not respectful enough... even if Dorian seems pretty happy in the end: when you talk to him after Coryfish is dead, he says he's going to stay because of Bull.

But this is a beautifully scripted romance! These dudes are made for each other! Opposites attract! It is beauty and the beast redux!

Grrrrrrrrr, people are so weird and hung up...

Don't get me wrong I like unicorns and rainbows as much as the next person. But people should undestand that DA is set in a gritty, dark universe.
Ofcourse not everything is going to be ideal, and as long as the darker aspects of the game are portrayed as such and not disguised as ideal I'm totally fine with them existing.
Because let's be real fantasy is fantasy, true but there are different aspects of reality, adressed in each genre of fantasy.

It's not even just that. Good writing is supposed to challenge you sometimes, and make you think. That means sometimes going outside your comfort zone a little. But this is an issue that goes deeper beyond gaming, I think, and it's something I see in media everywhere on all sides of the political spectrum. People are looking for confirmation bias in their news/entertainment, and not so much to be exposed to different ideas.

To bring this back on topic to Solas... I can image this must be how he felt when he approached the Dalish. They didn't want to hear anything new or potentially controversial about their beliefs, and they would chase him off.

  • Elvhenan (EL-vehn-ahn): Place of our people. The name of the elven civilization before the arrival of humans in Thedas.[7] Also could be translated as: "Our hearts".

Wasn't the context of that Abelas basically knocking down all Dalish pretensions of being the heirs of the days of Elvenhan?

He was basically dismissing Lavellan as a shemlen with pointy ears that has no idea what Arlathan was about, while acknowledging Solas as true 'elvhen'.

I believe Siha's response was tailored to, "It's not weird that he only comments about not being elvhen to an elf. It would be very obvious that a human, dwarf, or Vashoth Inquisitor was not elvhen, nor would they make any claims to being elvhen."

Yeah, from what I've read from people who've read the books, she's struggled so hard to help the elves for so long, and we barely get a feather of that impression just from watching the game.

Honestly, Briala sounds like an Orlesian version of my City Elf Warden, who also spent every waking moment struggling to help her people, approached the Dalish hoping they would embrace her as a sister and help her people (while the reality didn't match the expectation, I imagine she remained on good terms with Lanaya's clan, often went to visit, and often brought the Dalish's knowledge back to her alienage) and placed her trust in helping the elves into a charismatic female human noble who became queen (Anora), only to become disillusioned, realize the person she trusted turned on her people to further her own power, then realized she would have to take her people's fate into her own hands. (I imagine the main reason my Warden Tabris traveled West to find a cure for the Calling was because she realized Ferelden human nobles would never treat her people fairly without the Hero of Ferelden around to enforce changes, and realized she needs to live longer to make sure the changes were permanent. Also, so she and Warden Alistair could live long and happy together.)

And Briala is kind of similar to Lavellan. Both want so badly to help the elves and will go to great lengths to help their people. Briala makes that off-handed insult, "Finally slumming through one of the alienages of your people, I see?" but we can't connect with or reach out to her in a meaningful way at all. I headcanoned that my Lavellan wants so badly to help elves everywhere, regardless of their cultural background (contrary to the xenophobic Dalish stereotype), and constantly feels like she's being punched in the gut when fellow elven characters accuse her not caring.

Yeah... I don't know. I get the feeling that, when writing the game, the writers kind of thought, "We already explored this in the book, so there's no need to go into too much detail here. Players will have read the book / can read the book to learn more about this." And I don't think it's right. I feel like the writers should pretend like the books were not written, and flesh out the characters and explain the conflict as though this were the first game in the series.

Just look at Loghain. The Stolen Throne goes into more detail about his past and motivations, but one can still get pretty keen insight into his past and motivations in the game without picking up the book. It's not like he makes it a secret that he lived under Orlesian occupation, suffered horrible abuse under the chevaliers, pretty much gave Maric his victory in the Ferelden Revolution, and did what he did in Origins because he legitimately believed he was saving Ferelden (the nation) from Orlesian occupation.

DAI characters? Not so much. The books can make or break your opinions on them, because without the books you learn next to nothing about them.

True, one can learn about Celene purging an alienage while she and Briala were an item without reading the book, but still... my character felt a little guilty for letting Celene die when she came to the palace specifically to protect her (and felt dirty for playing the Game to someone's fatality). If I'd known more details about how awful Celene was to Briala and her own elven subjects, I wouldn't have felt as guilty.

I also wouldn't have recruited Michal as an agent or restored his standing in the Orlesian court if I'd known his history with elves. >_<

I'm almost glad some of this didn't make it into the game because there is no way my Lavellan would've reconciled Bria and Celene if she'd known the full story, and she happily would've taken the deal with the demon choice spirit and gotten Michel killed.  This gave me more options as the Inquisitor to go with how I felt the situation should play out.

Sadly, you are probably right. I do think some of the fan outcry for the ending of ME3 was justified, but if this is the behavior that it has perpetuated, then it is a very bad sign.

I don't know what this current drama is that is causing Weekes to take another break from twitter. But the drama over Iron Bull/Dorian is what caused the initial tumblr/twitter flame war. Essentially, some people have took the relationship between the two to be abusive and potentially rapey because alcohol was involved. And because Iron Bull later teases Dorian about it. Any rational critique has been lost in a sea of people calling abuse. Gaidar tried to play it off as a joke, that backfired.

It spiraled into complaints that Sera was also abusive and pretty much every other complaint one could have.

Well my reading of Dorian before the romance was that he was an incipient alcoholic... So my headcanon on all this would be that actually, the wholly unexpected romance he found with IB saved him from that. Let's not forget Dorian for all his vanity is a delicate sensitive soul... Due to his moral principals he's lost his country, culture, friends and family... Although, hopefully, I helped bring about some reconciliation with his father. So finding some solace with fellow outsider IB is great for them both.

I thought that Elvhen and Elven had some difference. Sorry I am not a native speaker so I might misunderstand some stuff sometimes.

And I thought it another kind of way actually.

*edit:  And I thought he meant that she has features of an ancient elvhen.

Fun-fact: Tolkien based Quenya (one of the elven languages) on Finnish originally. :D

Elvhen and Elven does have a difference, I think. My understanding that Elven is elf-related in general, while Elvhen is the Ancient Elves of Arlathan. At least, that's how I've used it.

Abelas's line about Lavellan goes something along the lines of her not being Elvhen specifically, correct? I didn't have subtitles on at the time. Can someone fact-check that for us?

I think he meant to point out that she shares some facial features (pointed ears etc.) with the ancient elves (Elvhen). Of course, this also expresses some discontent with the elves of "our" time. He does not much appreciate their ways as it seems (very much like Solas). But the shallow meaning of his words is simply: "Only because you look like us (= are elven) that does not mean you understand our ways or are worthy of being here. But at least you performed the rituals, I appreciate that".

Personally, even though I'm not a big fan of Michel, despite his positive qualities,my inquisitor would certainly choose him over Imshael even though my inquisitor didn't know that both were responsible for the slaughter of the clan.
Talking about Imshael,I find it odd that he didn't seem to recognise Solas and if he did recognise him, didn't comment on it,even in a cryptic manner.

I saw Weekes' tweet. Some people just get off on making others miserable. I mean, I'm critical of game developers at times but I would never go spew hate on someone's social media. It's so ironic that it's directed at people whose job it is to make things that are fun.

On a better note, is there a video or audio anywhere of the PAX lore panel today?

My god, I just listened to the YouTube stuff- I hadn't actually heard it before- and how anyone could get out of that that it's abusive... I think people are projecting, heavily. And hyperventilating, possibly.

This does remind me of the talk about Lavellan "pushing herself" on Solas.

The poor, abused boy.

This is my interpretation as well,I think he meant that the differences between his people and the modern elves, are more cultural than genetic.
After all Kieran still comments how an elfquisitor's blood is very "old".

Yeah, the scene with his father does reveal that Dorian hides a lot of pain and anguish behind his more playful facade. That his father tried to 'change' him must weigh heavily on him. If he found love with someone who accepted him for who he is and doesn't want to change him, all the more power to him.

Oh haha I didn't even know but now that I went to check it out ... that's yes.. I can see how it comes originally from Finnish.. as I am from Finland myself LOL

And I thought that there was a difference and he says to your inquisitor: '' You have the features of those who call themselves Elvhen ''

2) might be but she definetely has something god thing going on with her blood that is some ancient elvish.

to 1)

Of course. The Dalish claim to be the "real elves", as close to the ancient elves as it can get. Their "arrogance" is to still see themselves as rightful descendants of the Elvhen, hence they call themselves that.

to 2)

I see.
