I don't think so. He would abhor the idea of mind-controlling someone against their will. If he felt that his evasive back-story was not going to be enough, he would have fled. He did tell the truth, just not all of it. They were also desperate - Leliana says so in her final "Solas" codex entry. They needed help so badly and he was so willing and clearly knowledgeable they didn't push the issue. The "agent" she sends to interpret his paints is an art history scholar. So not like an assassin.
The event you are referencing with Cole - he asks Cole as a friend in his grief - one last time to narrate as Wisdom. See Solas as Wisdom saw Solas, so Solas can grieve. It's supposed to be a touching moment. And "saw that in the Fade" is his catch all excuse to mask " I remember it because I was there". THOUGH he could have actually seen it in the Fade. He can do that. That's why it works as an excuse.
Agreed. If there's one thing I'm certain Solas isn't doing, it's mind control. Solas is a bit of a hypocrite but that would be some insane hypocrisy. His absolute loathing of the Qun would tell you as much. He seems to think free will is worth everything.
I don't really see why it had to be an Orlesian linguist to introduce that alternative viewpoint to Fen'Harel, as opposed to another clan - given how the Dalish have been uncovering pieces of their history, and trying to piece together their lost knowledge about Elvhenan.
In The Masked Empire Celene is encourging the universities to rethink the traditional view on the elves. A Treaty on the Pagan and Heretical Customs of the Elven (which is where the Rebel God codex comes from) was even commissioned by her. Having an Orlesian scholar write about this is just building on what was established in lore about Celene's interest in elves and her reforming of the universities (she even starts to force them to admit elven scholars before everything goes wrong).
I'm always confused by this because while I know there's a pretty strong group of anti-Dalish people on the BSN, I never disliked the Dalish or knew anyone who did until coming to the forums. I don't really find them to be written as more or less sympathetic than the dwarves or the humans, and there are certainly more bad dwarves and humans. The Dalish are rude and prickly, but they don't kill your entire family, torture random nobles, perpetuate an antiquated caste system that keeps a large portion of their population in poverty... I guess what I'm saying is that I always found people to complain about the Dalish to be a bit self-centered for being mad that someone didn't like them, while they were usually 100% on-board with people that had actually done bad things like the Architect, Howe, or Bhelen.
FWIW, dwarf-supporters complain all the time about the lack of dwarven content and the poor depiction of the dwarves so... it seems to be that everyone feels their favorite sub-group is unfairly targeted >.>
I am not a super Dalish supporter. I'm not an anything supporter - I have a soft-spot for the Dwarves because I find their history interesting. . That's about it. Though: I think the writing does trend to make out the Dalish as kind of myopic and stubborn. People above me have said it a bit better than I, but the story is framed that they come off as ridiculously arrogant and haughty until a human or a dwarf comes swooping in with knowledge and they are left looking totally stupid and/or like massive assholes. That's how I've felt they've been portrayed at least. Again it's never stopped me from loving Velanna(I miss her) or Merrill or even their clans.

haha yes, started right after my first playthrought, with a bleeding heart. Thanks!
He seems to think free will is worth everything.
This sounds awfully familiar...except replace "free will" with "justice." He better not pull an Anders...
****, he lights veilfire with a flick of his wrist and I look like a lunatic trying to wave someone down a mile away when I light it.
Thats power.
Solas became a god because he alone knows the secret of lighting veilfire and looking sexy while doing so.

So after playing DAI ... here's what I feel happened. And yes there are holes in this theory I know so this isn't probably what happened just how it feels to me:
Fen'Harel sees how the "lower class" elves are being treated and doesn't like it. Also sees how his brethren (the other gods) are treating the elves in general. And decides to do something about it. Possibly the betrayal and murder of Mythal was a part of his reasoning. But, he stages a revolt against the other gods and the upper class. Manages to lock the other gods away. At this point, with the gods gone and the upper class overthrown he then removes himself from the picture thinking ok now the elves can manage themselves without "godly" interference and goes to sleep/uthenera. When he's gone, Tevinter rises and without their gods and their most powerful mages (who would have been killed in the uprising) the elves can't fight off Tevinter and become slaves. Couple thousand years pass (give or take a few centuries) and Fen'Harel wakes up (or gets woken up) and travels around and finds out oh crap this wasn't what he had intended for the elves - they're even worse off than before. Now he has to fix it. Enter Corypheus ... except things go wrong there too.
Unfortunately, "It wasn't supposed to be that way!" is kind of turning into poor Solas' catchphrase.
And as I said, obviously there are holes in this theory and it's not very fleshed out but this was the general gist of what I got. Especially after his banters with Sera.
The betrayal and murder of Mythal wasn't in his plans. I'm pretty sure that, if anything, Mythal's death was a trigger point. Interestingly, the mosaic that you collect, "The Sacrifice" may not about Qunari as the dwarf suggests, but about the elven gods killing one of their own. After all, Mythal and the others are shapeshifters and turn into dragons, and many of them are depicted with horns.

I didn't say that the agent she sent to read his painting was an assassin or anything like that. Just the fact that Leliana wanted some interpretation of his painting shows that she may have had a hint of suspicion about him.
As I said, Cassandra shows a good deal more suspicion but then sets it to one side when it is found that Lavellen can close the breaches. As you say, they just needed all the help they could get and Solas was extremely helpful and unobtrusive.
Do you have a link for the Solas Cole convo?
In the Blackwell convo I seem to recall that there is a slight pause before Solas says, "Yes, I saw it in the Fade" which to me makes it pretty clear he didn't see it in the fade (and the description he gives of the market is pretty sensual, which also points to him being there physically), but, of course, as you say he could have.

Well, It depends on what "got right" means.
- True, but they didn't know it was something like Tevinter with slaves and slavers. Slavers were actually the gods they worhisp.
- Most of them believe Tevinter destryed them, while Abelas claims that by the time humans came, elves had already fallen.
- Yes, we still don't know the truth. But it is implied he may have been the one betrayed, not the other way around.
- Well, we don't know why. It seems like Mythal doesn't want to bring back what was lost "you don't know what you ask", she says to the quizzy.
- Yes, details are important
It's a matter of perspective, really. I think that they would not be happy to discover the details they missed, because it would make them reconsider everything they thought they knew. I'm not saying they wouldn't do it.
Maybe "lie" isn't the correct word, but most of their history is, if not wrong, then inaccurate. Solas says this many times in the game, and it's the reason why he dislikes modern elves so much.
Our history is inaccurate too, since many thing were lost and can't be recovered, sadly.
- Doesn't matter. They believe the vallaslin are meant to honor the gods and each symbol represents a deity, and they turn out to be correct. They just didn't know about the "vallaslin were for slaves" part, but some details get lost to history.
- Doesn't matter. They still believe they were betrayed from the inside and left vulnerable to being conquered by Tevinter since the gods didn't answer their prayers when they called out to them for help, and it turns out there's truth to that. There was betrayal from inside (though Abelas points out that Fen'Harel is not responsible for what they think happened), and those they would have counted on for help (whether it be literal gods, the nobility, whatever) when Tevinter came for them didn't help them.
- I think it's implied that Solas was the one who did the betraying for what he thought was the greater good, and now regrets it. (Cole: You didn't do it to be right. You did it to save them.)
- I don't know, I remember that conversation, and if the Dalish Inquisitor calls Mythal out for not helping the elven people even though they've prayed and prayed all these centuries, she makes it clear she doesn't think highly of what the People have become and feels her own pursuit of revenge is a higher priority. All I could think during that scene was, "Wow, Merrill was right. The Creators really have abandoned the elves."
I guess I'm a "big picture" kind of gal. I feel the Dalish got the big picture right even if they got little details mistaken, or find that their stories are still based on grains of truth rather than fabricated from complete lies or misconceptions, so I think their believes are fine. I'm not disillusioned at all by their past because they fully admit they don't know everything, are supplementing what little information they have with stories, legends, and guestimates, and want to learn more about their past, and so I feel open to altering the details when more is discovered. I feel like the new details we discover in DAI would warrant one taking out the Big Book of Dalish Information and penciling in the new facts to go alongside the old ones, not cross out the old ones to make room for the new ones.
I bet his toes are ****** freezing tho.
He also knows the secret of not freezing his toes.
That's why the Dalish really hate him.

LOL meanwhile humans are yelling "SHOES! It's not hard, just don't stop adding material when you get to the goddamn toes!"
Even if he's not, I'm cold for him, seriously. I've ran around in snow before as a kid with no shoes thinking it'd be fun. NOT FUN.

Yeah I didn't mean Mythal's murder was part of his plan but more of a trigger for the revolt or as a consequence since they were friends and she might have actually supported him.
Elves are apparently highly adaptable to harsh environments and stuff.
But if we're just talking mages, Felassan used ambient magic to do simple things like keeping the rain off himself and keeping himself warm (he went shoeless too). So I imagine Solas can easily do the same.

I always wondered why the elves never wear shoes...Fenris and Merrill also have their toes peeping out...

I love how he has to rip apart every piece of clothing to keep up with his apostate hobo cred. Like the Battlemage mail - it literally looks like he took the boots and cut the toes off. WHY SOLAS? WHY DO YOU DO THIS? I MAKE YOU SUCH BEAUTIFUL CLOTHES.

Yes. Agreed. Poor argument here. And he seems extraordinarily good at keeping a low profile... However, arguably making others forget you as Cole does is not a fetter on their free will or using something like a cloak of shadows on yourself again would not affect the free will of others.
Is..... is Solas a spirit? Like did he used to be a spirit?

I've decided that Solas just doesn't feel his toes anymore. If you stomped on them, he wouldn't even notice.
I guess that takes care of the horrible possibility of stubbing toes. Man does that hurt. ![]()
Edit: @Sashimi - I've seen it speculated that all the elven "gods" were very powerful spirits who basically manifested themselves as people. Kind of like Cole does on the human path.
- Cole: Bright and brilliant, he wanders the ways, walking unwaking, searching for wisdom...
- Solas: I do not need you to do that, Cole.
- Cole: Your friend wanted you to be happy, even though she knew you wouldn't be.
- Solas: (Sighs.) Could you... if you would remember her, could you do it as I would?
- Cole: He comes to me as though the Fade were just another wooded path to walk without a care in search of wisdom.
- Cole: We share the ancient mysteries, the feelings lost, forgotten dreams, unseen for ages, now beheld in wonder.
- Cole: In his own way, he knew wisdom, as no man or spirit had before.
- Solas: Thank you.
Thanks! I am currently toying with the idea of writing a FF and that is incredibly useful.

Battlemage Mail Legs give him nice matching shoes. But it still feels blasphemous. ![]()

Did you ever watch that cartoon Wild Thornberries? Remember the blonde girl who got new jeans and immediately ripped them at the knees? That's Solas, LOL.

Cole: You don't need to envy me, Solas. You can find happiness in your own way.
Solas: I appologize for disturbing you, Cole. I am not a spirit. Sometimes it is hard to remember such simple truths.
I don't think he is.
