Hm?
The context of the post i quoted, sacrificing anything (including your queen) to acheive his ultimate goal. Made me think of being a slave to mythal. If the epilouge shows him absorbing mythals power my guess is you could be under his control.

Not really - if we know anything about Solas it's that he cares more about the plight of the pawns, the nobodies, than he does corrupt people in power.
This is true. I stand corrected ![]()
What I've always liked about pawns is if you get them to the other side of the board they can become a queen (or anything really but pawn to queen sounds better).
I like how you think.
So I don't know anything about chess, but I did find out that the game is actually this one: http://en.wikipedia....i/Immortal_Game
Interesting.
The line from the wiki article that stands out is:
"In this game, Anderssen (as played by Solas) wins despite sacrificing a bishop, both rooks, and the queen to produce checkmate against Kieseritzky (The Iron Bull) who only lost three pawns. He offered both rooks to show that two active pieces are worth a dozen inactive pieces."
The article also talks about how, at the time, chess players tended to prefer "rapid development and attack" as "the most effective way to win," which this Anderssen guy apparently rejected. Kind of ties into that other banter with the Bull, where Bull talks about how Solas isn't flashy like most mages - most never see him coming.
I also see it as an example of Solas' subversive nature... and the difference between him and the other gods. Other gods would likely prefer big flashy moves, not caring how many soldiers or little people are sacrificed, where Solas sees that it's the little people, in their ability to escape notice, that can have real power. This is echoed in his respect for Sera's cause, and his trying to advise her.
I never got the chess match because I never took Bull anywhere, but I've heard the party banter from Youtube.
I actually think the last round says so much about Solas' character, my head was reeling the first time I heard it.
- Iron Bull: All right, Solas. I've thought about it. Ready to finish this? Ben-Hassrath to A6.
- Solas: Knight takes Pawn at G7. Check.
- Iron Bull: Uh-huh. King to D8.
- Solas: Queen to F6, Check.
- Iron Bull: And now my Ben-Hassrath takes your Queen.
- Iron Bull: You've got no Towers. You're down to a single Mage. Too bad you wasted time moving that Pawn to... to...
- Iron Bull: You sneaky son of a ******.
- Solas: Mage to E7. Checkmate.
- Iron Bull: (Grunts.). Nice game, mage.
- Solas: And you as well, Tal-Vashoth.
Subtle foreshadowing that Solas is willing to sacrifice everything to obtain his goal, including his relationship with Lavellan (his real-life queen).
(EDIT: In fact, come to think of it, he probably ended the relationship because he didn't want to ever be in a situation where he would have to sacrifice her or have to choose between her and his end goal. I imagine ending the relationship was like him taking her out of the game, the way one removes a chess piece before it can get killed by another.)
Sorry to make this depressing if I did, but I just observed that after hearing it.
I'd sooner say Lavellan is the pawn and Mythal the Queen. While I love my inquisitor, to say she even began to rival Mythal in both power, influence, and importance to the chess game of Thedas feels inaccurate. If she were, that would be a terrible case of the protagonist overshadowing the setting and its history. Moreover, her position as a pawn feels accurate - she was a nobody. A non-entity. It's only her moves on the board that make her a powerful piece.
So while in the thousands of years scheme of things, Lavellan is a pawn, a piece limited in both power and movement, Solas took his time to make sure to move it to where it needed to be. Others, similar to Iron Bull, would have abandoned or disregarded it in favor of a stronger entity. Regardless, Solas (who takes the role of the mage piece) is enabled by Lavellan's (or the pawn's) position of power on the board to accomplish his grand coup détat.
Seriously. Whether it turns out tragically or dramatically where we can earn our happy ending, I hope they take advantage of all the feels they can invoke with that potential confrontation.

YES YOU DID BUT IT GOT BETTER.
I used to play chess all the time, and I've since lost my touch, but I love pawns. Like Solas has shown, pawns can achieve so much, help earn a victory, become so much more than they are. Solas sacrifices the bigger pieces, what we may see as the elven gods, but he puts so much value in a pawn - the little people...the Inquisitor, who was a footman in their stories and became someone extremely powerful and important.

Yes, also this! Kinda what I was getting at but... gheh, words... I feel like people miss this aspect of his personality. I mean, I get how he can seem arrogant and out of touch at times, but he has a lot of respect and admiration for the little people. Sera is one example, Briala and the elven servants are another. The Qunari baker with her little act of rebellion, the peasant who against all odds becomes a great poet, and so on.
I have a giant folder just dedicated to Solas fan art/screenshots/gifs...and I am in the progress of making my own...but honestly this can't be healthy.
Why isn't he reaaaaaaaaaal.

lol..My Solas fanart folder is friggin' huge. Before this game came out..Anders (usually playing with a cat) was winning in my DA fan art folder. but now the poor guy doesn't stand a chance. Sorry Anders, Solas is my favorite now.
No, that's perfect. I really enjoyed watching the match on YouTube because I needed the visual. I am not very good at strategy and am very impressed by people who are.I never got the chess match because I never took Bull anywhere, but I've heard the party banter from Youtube.

I respect that...as I am a Fenris fan...I hate reading the GINORMOUS Fanders vs Fengirls arguments....I don't particularily like Anders but he was a bro in Awakenings.
But yes. Solas trumps even Fenris (sorry Hawke) because he's so much more than he seems.

I love all these chess comparisons. I like Lavellan as the pawn instead of the queen too and the idea that Solas may have left in part because he didn't want to be put in a situation where he might have to sacrifice her for his goals.

Oh..My Fenris folder is pretty big too, only reason Anders was winning is because...cats!! LOL
Solas cares. A lot. The problem is that everything he's done to help his people has backfired and turned him into a vilified figure.
He's somewhat of a foil to Corypheus, both men have done terrible things for the perceived greater good of their people for naught. Corypheus takes his failure and attempts to reshape the world, thinking he can recapture the past. Solas has accepted that what happened to his people is pretty much his fault, he'll keep trying to help them; it's who he is but he has no illusions that he can put things back the way they were.
Lavellan is a sign that things could get better. Or we'll wind up with the Aldmeri Dominion, where funky backpack-sweater-vest things are the mandatory uniform.
I am ok with the funky backpack sweater uniform. Totes functional.
The whole game I kept wondering "What is in that bag??? I must know for science!"

I kept Solas in the warden mage armor because everything else looked like **** on him. Kind of irrelevant but whatever ![]()

An Elvhen Dominion absolutely refusing to be crushed by Orlais or any Exalted March would be very satisfactory.
Until, you know, they're inevitably corrupted into Orlais with pointy ears/Keepers as Thalmor.
But those first few conflicts would be glorious.

That warden mage armor is swanky. It's the giant sparkly griffon shoulder, I think.

I agree. I think some people tend to forget about this part of Solas' personality. Probably because his comments about other races or his disappointment in modern elves are more memorable. But whenever people say he doesn't care about anyone in his arrogance, I think of this. He has respect for the "nobodies" of their world and though he makes blanket statements when it comes to big picture things, he highly values the individual. It's with the individual that he's open-minded and recognizes that potential can come in any form.
Him appreciating that Qunari baker and her little act of rebellion was my favorite story of his and one of his most endearing moments in the game, in my opinion. ![]()

Agree. I think a lot of people forget to take Sera around because she seems to rub most people on this forum the wrong way - I get that. I sort of wanted to power through that and have kind of grown to love her. So i'll take her around with me and I love her and Solas' banters. They are up there with Cassandra's. You see this really wonderful side to his personality with both. He seems to oddly respect her and is deeply frustrated by her lack of end goals. I don't think he'll every like her like he seems to like Cassandra but he respects what she is doing.

That's a really good observation. I hadn't thought of it that way.
However, I wouldn't completely rule out the queen comparison, as...

Bingo. Also a great observation!

Personally? That's part of why I love symbolism.
You can learn so much a character on many fronts and ascribe so many meanings to one object or course of action.
Solas' game with Bull reveals so much about him, not just about his willingness to sacrifice anything to obtain his goals, but his value in the little people, his ability to make big changes out of the movements of a small "nobody" that most people would overlook, his preferred method of obtaining victory being to appear innocuous so people in power overlook his small, humble, seemingly meaningless little people/actions until it's too late, etc.
Also, yeah. Pawns can become queens. Lavellan goes from just being some nobody he helps turn into the celebrated Inquisitor to defeat Corypheus, to being one of, if not the most important person in his life. In the chess game, Solas moving the Pawn could very well symbolize moving the Inquisitor and sacrificing the Queen could be him sacrificing Flemeth/Mythal, but at the same time it could still double as a parallel to Solas being willing to sacrifice his relationship with his queen to obtain his ends.
