Similar to Solas in the 'respecting their commitment to their goal'.
Tevinter's goal seems to be 'Survive No Matter the Odds'. Even if it's just Minrathous.
Tevinter's survived for 2355 years if you get snooty. Rome survived for 2000 if you're generous. (And when it comes to Rome, I'm always generous.
)
Considering what they've gone up against, it's hard to imagine anything taking Tevinter down.
But seriously. I'm a Tevinter fan just for their terrifying refusal to die. Like Rome during the Second Punic Wars, but with Qunari and Andraste's Exalted Marches.
One of the first lore things that really made me fall in love with Dragon Age was the Codex entries noting that Andraste's armies stood no chance of throwing down the Tevinter Imperium permanently, and that it was impressive that managed to hold on to anything at all. In Andraste's place, I would have called it off.
So I've been thinking that the spirits we face in the Temple of Sacred Ashes are Disciples of Andraste, but they're different Disciples than the ones depicted. It's mentioned Ash Wraiths are created by them tossing themselves into the sacrificial fire. And should you fail or reject one of the riddles, they turn into Ash Wraiths. Archon Hessarian is known to have ruled for years after Andraste's death and eventually died in bed, but he's present. They're Disciples that are acting out famous characters from their Prophet's life. None dares take the role of Andraste herself. A few may have even been there for real.
Cathaire's comments suggest that the Armies of the Faithful actually witnessed magical fire and lightning that they attributed to the Maker. The Dumat=Mythal=Andraste as a Vessel theory occurs to me.
Ah god... Romans. One of the reasons I dislike Tevinter so much is because of that comparison. But luckily for you I hate Orlais even more
Both are power houses. If either of them are going to disappear, it's going to take everything from one of them, and the conflict would likely end before one is even close to losing.
I'm fond of the theory that says Andraste had Dumat's soul in her via morrigan ritual. Cole says something odd and randomly like "It was wrong to put it in her. She was a child.", which is peculiar to say the least. Then there's the cult that says she's a high dragon. I think those troubling dreams she received was him, just like how Kieren hears whispers.
And it explains why Tevinter says she's a mage beyond just "Hurr durr we want her to be one of us."
Someone had to perform this ritual before for Morrigan to know it. Even if they say no one's killed an archdemon and lived before. There's more to it that we likely don't know.
