It still breaks my heart, that he had to leave.
I think Solas says it best as you leave the Chantry in the final section of the Battle of Haven, it's roughly, "I understand the strategy, but usually I try to avoid this much attention."
You, as the Herald/ Inquisitor, draw the attention of the entirety of Thedas. They're so busy looking at you, "your" choices, "your" army, "your alliances," that they're not paying attention to the apostate hedge mage in the background. Who is an ancient Elvhen God of Rebellion in disguise. Helping the inquisition because it furthers his goals and allows him to be in a position of power, with the ability to act out against Corypheus. He hides because it's safe and it protects both his identity and his interests.
He doesn't NEED the power of the orb from you if he can guide your decisions and your goals remain the same (i.e. defeat Corypheus, reclaim the orb). He only needs the power of the orb within the story of Inquisition should you actively thwart his plans (which you're not, even if you make choices that he disapproves of - no matter what, you're after Corypheus and the Orb).
I imagine once it is revealed to Solas that removing the anchor would kill the Inquisitor, the potentiality of having to remove it himself becomes ... distasteful. Dirty. A sloppy solution. As he develops respect for the Inquisitor due to their own actions/ choices, and (should they be a willing Lavellan) falls in love with them, it becomes a deeply dreaded and feared possibility.
When you consider that post-destruction of the orb, when all of it's power that remains is as sealed to your life as your spirit to your body, he turns and kills a dear friend he's had 8,000+ years, and Mythal isn't even surprised that that's the call he makes, it's pretty clear he wants to preserve the life of the Inquisitor.
EDIT: Moreover, the power of the orb itself seems to eclipse the anchor. Solas is looking for the whole dorito bag, not a single chip. Especially one that would crumble to pieces in his hands if it can't be reclaimed even if the Inquisitor is killed.
True dat.

.... you mean, Solas's great plan is to quote Disney at us? ![]()

You deserve an unbroken world.
And I’m the only one who can give that to you.
.
HAHAHA you slayeth me.
I will cry buckets of tears if we have to kill him. I can take almost anything else, but not that.
If the choice is to save Solas or save Thedas...
*saves Solas*
Solas greatly disapproves.
(edited whoops ahha)
.
^^^ And this too. I hadn't thought of that!
Although, I thought the Dev Notes stated that the Orb was Mythal's not Fen'Harel's?
If sealing Breach 2.0/getting bedazzled with red lyrium/getting smashed by rocks was enough to destroy the Orb of Destruction, it'd be fair to say that Fen'harel's own foci was destroyed during the apparently Sealing Away of ALL OF THE OTHER LIVING GODS.
Damn, Solas.
If it was possible, it'd have been ideal to neutralize one god, seal, take their artifact, and repeat. Further neutralizing their power. But that's too much of a blank space when it comes to fan knowledge. *shrug*

Dread Puppy, hold my ball.

You lost the ball??? Bad puppy!

Oh no > <
Yeah, I just can't. I couldn't kill Loghain. I couldn't kill Anders. I can't kill Solas. Nope Nope Nope.
But the 'trickster god' is the label he got from the Dalish. He is the god of rebellion, not trickery.
He is also horrible at concealing emotions and he is really suspicious through the entire game for that reason.
I barely outright lies, and when he does he does it badly "uhhhh FADE! Yes, I saw it in the fade!", he doesn't like lying, he disapproves when he has to lie after the Winter Palace. He is more likely to avoid telling things rather than tell a blatant lie.
He is really compassionate, it's quite obvious, his writer did tell us that you get to see who he really is through his banters.
Plus, he looked horrified when he saw what the explosion caused. Maybe he didn't intend for Coryflakes to live on after unlocking the ord but I don't think he thought it would cause a large scale explosion.

I can kill loghain, hand Isabela over to the Qun
but I can't kill Alistair.. or Anders.... I don't even like see Solas fall in battle
so I'm sure if i could kill him...
mmmmmmmmmmmmm........
I uh..
Really can't ignore there is a patch of tall grass growing in the snow.
I don't think that's supposed to be there.
OMG Solas being DA shades of grey made my day lol XD I've never read the book or neither seen the movie but now I know that I didn't make this video for nothing:
(In fifty shades of grey trailer for those who have not seen they use that song)

50 shades of grey ends with having a kid lol.
I never got the chess match because I never took Bull anywhere, but I've heard the party banter from Youtube.
I actually think the last round says so much about Solas' character, my head was reeling the first time I heard it.
- Iron Bull: All right, Solas. I've thought about it. Ready to finish this? Ben-Hassrath to A6.
- Solas: Knight takes Pawn at G7. Check.
- Iron Bull: Uh-huh. King to D8.
- Solas: Queen to F6, Check.
- Iron Bull: And now my Ben-Hassrath takes your Queen.
- Iron Bull: You've got no Towers. You're down to a single Mage. Too bad you wasted time moving that Pawn to... to...
- Iron Bull: You sneaky son of a ******.
- Solas: Mage to E7. Checkmate.
- Iron Bull: (Grunts.). Nice game, mage.
- Solas: And you as well, Tal-Vashoth.
Subtle foreshadowing that Solas is willing to sacrifice everything to obtain his goal, including his relationship with Lavellan (his real-life queen).
How do you get this awesome scene? Love the way they've localized the names of the pieces (not an expert on chess but my understanding is that in some middle eastern cultures the queen is the grand vizier)...
There is actually a similar scene involving Tyrion, another trickster character in A Dance with Dragons...
Now, must get back to work.
I will never be able to unsee the orb/ thedas being bedazzled with red lyrium. THANK YOU, SIR. For the best laugh. EVER.
I doubt it managed to usurp laughing at the Colonel yesterday.
I've been guffawing at regular intervals.
As for the patch of grass in the snow. Shari'El, this is Ferelden. Do you really doubt that Ferelden grass isn't stubborn enough to flip off the world and grow like that? ![]()
Veilfire, Solas's familiarity with it, and how he very casually lights it were some of the biggest hints in the early game of Solas being more than he appears to be.
Skyhold is the first big hint of the mid-game. ![]()
Hm.. what I think would be a cool DLC for Solas if you have romanced him, that you get a choice to go with him away from Thedas, like they do in the last scene with elves travaling to their afterlife or what it was and your Lavellan would be a elven god and stay together with Solas ^^
What sort of Fade-touched, moon-barking madness took over the thread last night. It's brilliant, OMG.
*insert eyeroll gif*
I have no sympathy for the straight male romance whines after seeing so many of them in the forum. And if they can't appreciate Cass then there's just something wrong with them anyway.
People conclude that based on what he says, which is really our only clues as to his thought process. I don't think he anticipated the Conclave- he says it was undoubtedly a mistake Corypheus made, so evidently that was not something he anticipated. I believe Solas can be ruthless but that would just be stupid evil which I don't think he is.
His dialogue with Dorian suggests the Tevinters also were familiar with the orbs, so Solas possibly anticipated that Corypheus would recognize it. It's possible he thought that once the orb activated, it would give him his power back and he could eliminate Corypheus. Instead, Corypheus usurped its power somehow, maybe by tainting it?
Too sad drinking from the well is an optional choice. Otherwise the inquisitor would definitely be bound to Mythal and as a consequence to Solas.
We do not know that. We see Flemeth sink into his arms, lifeless. But Flemeth was only a body. And it was old, already failing. We know that from DAO (and DA2, a bit). Mythal might have chosen to leave it and have the younger Solas take her soul in (possibly until a replacement is found) as Morrigan refused to be a vessel. I would not say he killed her or that it was a hostile takeover. "The soul is not forced on the unwilling", but surely it is also not so easy to steal a soul. She cannot have the OGS in Kieran without his assistance either. She needed the boy's cooperation, else she could have just taken it without all the fuss.
For my Lavellan story... Solas thought she was beautiful as he was trying to keep the mark from killing her while she was unconscious. She reminded him of someone but he couldn't remember who. He knew what color her eyes would be before she opened them. He was impressed that the mark hadn't killed her right away. She must have a very strong mind. He actually went into her dreams and helped her wake up before the mark spread too much. Of course she doesn't remember this, but thinks he looks familiar too for some reason.
This thread gained 60 pages while I was away for the weekend? SIXTY!?
I've caught up on 30. The rest will have to wait until the morning. I'm too used to the other forum I go to which just sorta dies at the weekend.
I think the guy who made the Solas 'fad' thread has made a bunch of troll threads before. I shouldn't have wandered in there with a headache and got stroppy. That's the kind of reaction he probably wants. I should have just gone with this.
Just swung by to start catching up and post the start of poor Niamh's doomed relationship
Although I shouldn't call her poor. I realised as I was screenshotting that she's actually terrifying. Her face when she was going in for that kiss.... Yeesh. She looks like she's going to claim his soul.
Spoiler
POSITIVE VOTE QUOTAS. I WISH TO KILL THEM.

I WOULD SING THIS TO SOLAS ![]()
Sorry for reposting my video XD
