I wouldn't mind having some half god babies with solas.

I know...But poor kid, people would expect too much from him/her and never let him/her breathe or be free. Maybe just keep it a secret and be a savior for another story.

Way to many pages to read so I've just read a few posts, sorry if I repeat anything.

But the 'trickster god' is the label he got from the Dalish. He is the god of rebellion, not trickery.

He is also horrible at concealing emotions and he is really suspicious through the entire game for that reason.

I barely outright lies, and when he does he does it badly "uhhhh FADE! Yes, I saw it in the fade!", he doesn't like lying, he disapproves when he has to lie after the Winter Palace. He is more likely to avoid telling things rather than tell a blatant lie.

He is really compassionate, it's quite obvious, his writer did tell us that you get to see who he really is through his banters.

Plus, he looked horrified when he saw what the explosion caused. Maybe he didn't intend for Coryflakes to live on after unlocking the ord but I don't think he thought it would cause a large scale explosion.

I'm paraphrasing, but I believe one of the disapproval dialogues for Solas after the well of sorrows implies that he enjoys watching those who grasp for power only to be staggered by the very power they are trying to control.

I imagine that's the sort of irony he was going for with Corypheus. He probably smugly thought that Corypheus was going to take the orb, power it up, and then kill himself in the process of trying to access it. Which unfortunately turned into another instance of Solas's pride getting the better of him- he completely underestimated Corypheus's abilities.

I don't think he intended for the explosion to happen. But the fact that he was trailing Corypheus does leave me to think that he did know something was going down, and waited it out rather than intervene.

What you're saying is true but he's also shown to be a strategist and dedicated to his cause. If his Cory and The Orb plan had been successful he would have felt guilty at the high price but he still would have picked up that orb and gone on his merry way to complete the next stage of his plan.

I've no doubt that if he could have ripped the anchor from the Inquisitor's hand, whether it killed them or not, he would have.

For all his good qualities when it comes down to it this is a man who will sacrifice his love and his dearest friend to achieve his goal, the lives of strangers can easily be justified. It's easy to be kind when it costs you nothing.

I have to disagree.  I think he was wandering the world looking for any powerful mage to help him unlock the orb. He probably didn't mean to give it away, just needed assistance. He would have killed the other person - if necessary - but he probably hoped they would help and he would be on his merry way.  Remember what Bianca said --  she told a Warden Mage about the red lyrium. I have feeling the Corypheus was parading as the warden - Larius/the lady - for years.  Solas probably sensed someone very powerful and sought them for assistance.   Then he was duped.  He also seems actually surprised that Corypheus can even access all that power in the orb.  Solas probably only thought a mage could just help him power it up, not actually use it.  That's why I don't think he intended for anything at the Conclave to happen even as a side-effect.  Kind of a theme with him - he tends to be blinded by his own wisdom and continues to make mistakes because of it.

I never thought he spoke in riddles.  Half-truths maybe. Never out right lies.

Obviously, he is indeed the person who believes that the end justifies the means, but I'm pretty sure that if he can control it he will keep sacrifices to a minimum. He cherishes life and freedom.

I don't think he sat and planned anything with Coryflakes, tbh. I think he needed help unlocking the orb, something he couldn't do by himself because he lacked the power, and he gave/let (planted or whatever) Coryfabulous the orb in hope he'll succeed with that. I don't think Solas would've risked having someone more powerful than him (because if Coryshmock can unlock the orb it means he has more power than Solas) becoming the new world's god. He has worked so hard to free the people from the elven pantheon's reins, I can't see him letting the world fall to the hand of some evil magister.

I think Coryfilous searched some elven ruins for a "somnaborium" to try and get to enter the fade and become god, Solas saw a magister, a person who can unlock the orb (perhaps because he has used such things in the past), and let him have it. The reason I think he planted the orb/let him take it rather than go up to him and give him the orb is because Cory didn't recognize Solas in the final battle. Maybe Solas didn't even believe he can unlock it, but he did keep an eye on him (he was at Haven at the time of the explosion, that can be seen in Varric's intro video).

But of course, I could be entirely wrong :D

He's still a trickster, even if he also are the God of rebellion.

Just look at the tales about him - the noble story and the killing of the beast - and you can read in between the lines that he mercylessly uses his wit to deal with situations. In excess of thos you also have his personality in the game to consider.

He isn't evil but he isn't a goody too shoe either. He sees necessity and does what he have to no matter the consequenses.

He isn't really straight out lying to people, just not telling everything, making up a few white ones to make things easier *cough' saw it in the fade *cough*

Even if he did know/didn't I doubt I'd care about the Chantry.

We know that he gave the orb to Cory, but not why(?)

Cory don't seem to know who he is in the final battle, which tells us that either he's changed his apperance since then or Cory may not even know that Solas/Fen'Harel was the one who gave him the orb to begin with.

As I said I'm totally confused by everything now...

Actually, he says some of the orbs where dedicated to specific members of the pantheon, so it's not certain every god had one. Ofc it could be just him being vague about it.
Here, at 0.56 http://youtu.be/bDbB_tTrBvA?t=56s

True, I apologize. I used a bad set of words for the reference.

Wait...where did he sacrifice anyone?  He betrays them - in a way - but he doesn't really put them in any danger -- at least intentionally -- for his cause.  He actually leaves. He sacrifices his own happiness to put as much distance between himself and the Inquisition.

And I don't think he views the deaths of strangers as "nothing".  Remember his banter between him and Bull about how he did not enjoy killing bandits.  He does have a heart.

I'm with you. I think he leaves, in order not to cause more pain to anyone.

"the path I must walk in solitude forever. Indeed. I do not with this upon an enemy, even less someone I once cared for."

He feels he have to do, what ever it is he have to do, alone. It might be dangerous. It might be immoral/wrong. It might kill people in the process. But he have to do it. And he don't want anyone else caught up in it, friend or foe. So he leaves.

Guys, all this conversation re. Solas taste in trickery (greatly spoken posts of Faerunner and LobselVith8) make me willing to raise another question, bugging my mind from some time.

Do you think the Inquisitor nor anyone in Skyhold could not suspect there is something more about Solas and not ask him question about it?

I mean... I know we're limited to get knowledge about the characters from dialogues in codex entries only. In my headcanons though I always imply there were many more interactions between the PC and NPC than it's given to us in the game: it's like obvious the characters couldn't just talk ONLY about the things we see in the game.

In RL I tend to be curious, to the limit of asking sometimes potentially uncomfortable questions to people, hence (my headcanon again) I hardly believe that my Quizzie never started to dig in deeper into Solas past, background etc. Funny thing is I suspect the same for Leliana (as a spymaster she like to know everything about everyone), but also Vivienne mentions in one of her banters something like "curious, Solas has so many to tell about the history and the Fade and so little about himself", so it seems it's also bugging her.

I wonder from some time how would Solas deal with such "uncomfortable" questions. My best guess (lol, ofc) : every time Lavellan asks him a question he does not want to answer => passionate kiss :D ;)

What are/would be your headcanons on such situations?

I definitly thinks that they suspect things but he isn't called trickster god for nothing. He's bright, has a really good head on his shoulders, and on top of that he seems to have the same power as Cole to make people forget things.

I'm sure they have asked questions but he either pulled a veil over their eyes with some fade story or he simply made them forget...

Okay, I know I'm, like, way late to the "how important should his relationship with Lavellan be to Solas" party, but I just wanted to say that I totally agree with those of you that were saying that she should not be his everything. I am a writer by nature, as in I HAVE to write or I will get severely depressed. If anyone ever asked me to give up on writing, I would not so kindly tell them where tbey could sticK it, okay? That is not just a "thing I do." Writing is absolutely integral to my sense of being. To the point where my mental health is affected by it. I imagine that Solas' s life goals are similar I that way. He cannot give them up without being drastically changed in the process, and he is not willing to accept that consequence. He will follow through or else betray himself and everything he believes in. And besides, I wouldn't want anyone to be in a relationship with my non-writer self. She's cranky.

And that's exactly how I played my game. Lav and Solas love each other immensely. But that doesn't mean that they can't have interests outside of one another. It's natual and healthy. To be consumed by one another is... well, to be honest, it's an immature view of what a relationship should or even could be. My Lav was upset with Solas for the breakup, sure. As anyone would be, but it was not because he was the be all to end all, it was because she knew there was something he was still keeping from her, (I mean "the truth, your face..."? Come on, Solas. That's not even a good cover up.) She's pretty smart, too. She's upset because she didn't get the right truth. The truth he was SUPPOSED to tell her. And she didn't get to decide for herself if it was something she could handle. He made that decision for her (somethIng he apparently has a history of doing To elves in general and she remembers having had that conversation before).

That's my $0.02, anyway.

Like the kid of every great person in the world - to much unintended expectations from people.

There's a reason such kids often rebel.

I wouldn't mind the idea of a child though. emoticon-heart-24px-image-picture.gif

Ah god... Romans. One of the reasons I dislike Tevinter so much is because of that comparison. But luckily for you I hate Orlais even more ;) Both are power houses. If either of them are going to disappear, it's going to take everything from one of them, and the conflict would likely end before one is even close to losing.

A true European at heart. Hate the Italians, alright, but most of all hate the damn French.

I feel like BW should've definitely put a big red warning on Solas.

But... they did? A guy can't do more than constantly tell you how he might really really mean trouble for you. Consequences, considerations, really should go, would be kinder in the long run... he really tried hard to make Lavellan see reason. Most real life guys wouldn't bother so much.

And when we're at songs representing Solas, could any one song be better than

No one knows what it's like
To be the bad man
To be the sad man
Behind blue eyes
And no one knows
What it's like to be hated
To be fated to telling only lies

But my dreams they aren't as empty
As my conscience seems to be
I have hours, only lonely
My love is vengeance
That's never free

No one knows what its like
To feel these feelings
Like i do, and i blame you!
No one bites back as hard
On their anger
None of my pain and woe
Can show through

No one knows what its like
To be mistreated, to be defeated
Behind blue eyes
No one knows how to say
That they're sorry and don't worry
I'm not telling lies

No one knows what its like
To be the bad man, to be the sad man
Behind blue eyes.

The ONLY reason I regret not saving the mages in Redcliffe (screw you Fiona and your terrible decision making skills and/ or strategic planning, you do NOT give Tevinter access to a port. BAD, Fiona, BAD) is because I feel so deep for Conor. He had a helicopter mother from hell, drove Redcliffe into the ground trying to keep his father alive with the best knowledge he had as a child, and is now an adult. Hollowed, haunted, aware. I want him in my future party too.

He does? How, when? I met him in Redcliffe once but that's about it. What did I miss?

And even MORE validated into not siding with Fiona. I don't care that she's got some sparkly magical unblightable womb that popped out the most adorable king to grace Thedas, GIRL HAS GOTTA PAY.

I also prefer the Templar arch. But I don't think it's "siding with Fiona". It's "saving the innocent mages who are not responsible for her mistakes".

I never got the chess match because I never took Bull anywhere, but I've heard the party banter from Youtube.

I actually think the last round says so much about Solas' character, my head was reeling the first time I heard it.

  • Iron Bull: All right, Solas. I've thought about it. Ready to finish this? Ben-Hassrath to A6.
  • Solas: Knight takes Pawn at G7. Check.
  • Iron Bull: Uh-huh. King to D8.
  • Solas: Queen to F6, Check.
  • Iron Bull: And now my Ben-Hassrath takes your Queen.
  • Iron Bull: You've got no Towers. You're down to a single Mage. Too bad you wasted time moving that Pawn to... to...
  • Iron Bull: You sneaky son of a ******.
  • Solas: Mage to E7. Checkmate.
  • Iron Bull(Grunts.). Nice game, mage.
  • Solas: And you as well, Tal-Vashoth.

Subtle foreshadowing that Solas is willing to sacrifice everything to obtain his goal, including his relationship with Lavellan (his real-life queen).

(EDIT: In fact, come to think of it, he probably ended the relationship because he didn't want to ever be in a situation where he would have to sacrifice her or have to choose between her and his end goal. I imagine ending the relationship was like him taking her out of the game, the way one removes a chess piece before it can get killed by another.)

Sorry to make this depressing if I did, but I just observed that after hearing it.

I don't think it was Lavellan, I think more of line of Mythal.

Don't forget the mage is the one who does the last move, so mage = Solas. I don't think Solas' Lavellan would be a queen.

Edit: I've responded to this before seeing the discussion that was created from it. So yeah... You said exactly what I think!
