I uh..
Really can't ignore there is a patch of tall grass growing in the snow.
I don't think that's supposed to be there.

It's next to the veilfire torch. It's elfy grass!

And I already have the HIGHEST hopes for random people I saved/ helped in Origins.

Especially BEVIN. I mean, I'm sure the random kid hiding in the closet of his house trying to get the legendary sword of his family wasn't all that important. But the fact that I gave it back to him after I saved Redcliffe, I totally hope that kid shows up as an adult in DA:4 as some badass wielding his family sword, ready to kick ass and save Thedas. The anticipation I have for him to become a party member at some point is so intense I can't even begin to describe it.

The ONLY reason I regret not saving the mages in Redcliffe (screw you Fiona and your terrible decision making skills and/ or strategic planning, you do NOT give Tevinter access to a port. BAD, Fiona, BAD) is because I feel so deep for Conor. He had a helicopter mother from hell, drove Redcliffe into the ground trying to keep his father alive with the best knowledge he had as a child, and is now an adult. Hollowed, haunted, aware. I want him in my future party too.

Cosigned. And Zerlinda's baby, too.

"See, I think we need to make a GIANT glyph and have people live in it."

"Those would have to be pretty small people, Guiseppe."

"I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT A GLYPH FOR ANTS. I'm saying we make a CITY sized gylph. For people."
"Oh. Well that makes sense. But what would we do with it?"
"Make the sewers run with blood of course."
"Why would we do that!?"

"WHY ARE YOU HERE? How did you even pass Villainy 101!? Go back to the science lab, Archy."

CORYFLORA: Arteca, if this goes sideways...

GUISEPPE: We're not going to miss the City's entryway, dammit! I've fine-tuned the jetpacks! (Sorry about rearranging your eye with the prototype, Architect, buddy. Sorrynotsorry.)

CORYFLORA: If this goes poorly, meet me at the bar. I know a great place in the Deep Roads. It has some great burlesque dancing, even. The setting is quite...intimate.

THE ARCHITECT: I-

FERNANDO: That sounds like a great plan! We should all meet up there! Dinner's on me!

CORYFLORA: No! The first date...was supposed to be golden...perfect...

I have been silently lurking in this thread for the past week since finishing my first playthrough of the game. Finally made my way through many of the posts, and I'm really pleased to have found so many thoughtful ideas and theories about Solas (as well as some hilarious and strange distractions! Ha!). So, I hought I would finally poke my head in and say hi. I romanced Solas on my first inquisitor, and let's just say as my first Bioware romance option, um, whoa. Did I just get lucky and pick the best (or perhaps worst, depending on your perspective) one...? Or are they all this engrossing and heartwrenching!? Hahaha. Something tells me no.

I went into this game having not played any of the previous Dragon Age games, and ended up playing quite slowly, reading all codex entries, and looking stuff up on the wikis as I went, because there is a LOT of lore, far more than I could have expected, and a lot that you could easily miss if you just graze the surface of it while playing through. So, I tried to be thorough and pick up as much info as possible.

Based on what I've learned, and understanding that there are likely still several gaps in my knowledge of the history and religions of Thedas, here's what I think and where I hope the writers will go with Solas and Lavellan.

This is not so much theory-driven speculation as character-driven speculation. Here goes.

I think the third act of Inquisition started pushing toward an important future choice for Solas. His tragic flaw is that he takes 100% personal responsibility to fix his own mistakes, and remains too guarded to let anyone in enough to fully trust with the truth of his situation. He holds his cards very, very close. He doesn't know how to let himself trust other people enough to help him make important decisions, no doubt because he has seen so many people (/"gods") make terrible, power-hungry choices that have had awful and far-reaching consequences. More than anyone in the Inquisition, Solas knows that big decisions are not to be made lightly.

Solas is also profoundly uncomfortable with being emotionally vulnerable. He is (and I don't mean this as a slight--in fact I think I also am this) remedially introverted. His inability to open up is what holds him back, what trips him up. Lavellan starts to crack the shell, but Solas clams up and is too shy to let her all the way in. Asking someone else for help, to Solas, is an act of dumping his problems, his baggage, on someone else. Since he cares deeply for Lavellan, he doesn't want to burden her with his problems, or as he puts it, 'distract you from your duties'. Solving his problems by himself is his incredibly ineffective way of demonstrating that he cares. His actions are one part pride, one part selflessness. Solas values the individual, and a person's ability to be independent, because this is what he values in himself.

I would like to see Solas grow one step further... His curse for Vivienne, "may you learn", is advice he himself should heed. While we can only speculate exactly what Solas wanted the orb for, what the Elven artifacts were for, and what the Mythal absorption was for, we can infer Solas has something big planned involving the Fade. Because Lavellan still bears the mark, the two of them are still bound. As long as Lavellan possesses the mark she potentially has a unique ability connecting her to the Fade in a way that could either greatly aid or greatly hinder Solas' future plans. I think they will for sure meet again.

If Solas is forced to choose between what he deems to be the greater good (whatever his mysterious plan is), and saving one person, like Lavellan, I think the more interesting choice from a pure character development standpoint would be for Solas to choose Lavellan. If there is one person he couldn't bear to lose, it's her. We've seen Fen'Harel fall from grace before, and he has clearly suffered the consequences of the choice to 'go it alone' before. Solas has paid for his mistakes already. To see him really grow as a character, we need to see him driven to a point where he chooses what he wants, not what he believes he has to do. For Solas, the ends always justify the means. He's willing to make sacrifices. If we believe that the romance was absolutely genuine on his part, then the only sacrifice he might not be willing to make would involve Lavellan. The very reason he pulls away from her is because he loves her so much it scares him.

The Inquisitor made him doubt himself, and I'd like to see him eventually forced to act on that doubt, to learn what it is to not have to win.

For all his wisdom, Solas' blindspot is himself. He understands so little of what his own personal needs are, because he chooses to ignore them in favor of immersing himself in solving the problems of the world. He is intelligent enough and thoughtful enough to find enough external fascinations that he can distract himself from facing his own squishy emotions. Solas being forced to choose between saving Lavellan and accomplishing his ultimate goal is what I'd most like to see in DLC/future games. Even, and perhaps especially, if choosing Lavellan spells out dire consequences for him, I want to see these two get a chance to change together, if only for a moment. I don't foresee a happy ending, but I think Solas embracing the squishy side and putting the woman he loves ahead of any other agenda is about as positive a move as we can hope for, and that may be asking for a lot because that is the very thing that would be hardest for Solas to do...

While Solas' motivations still aren't completely understood, I still felt like I got what made him tick. Could be wrong in my speculations, and I guess only time will tell, but I certainly have fun puzzling about Solas. Kudos to Patrick Weekes :) What a complex and compelling character.

Also those thighs. Mmm.

Fantastic first post here! Thanks so much for that, welcome and please stay!  Team Optimism needs you!

Morning guys, I've listened to the recording from PAX and all I can say is this...worry not my lovelies, what was said is pretty much what was said in the NA interview. He didn't want Solas to come across as a villain, my guess is because that's not what he is, we already know he's the shades of grey type, nothing has changed.  I mean, look at how he comes across to people who ignore him and never bother to get to know him, he's boring, but how can he be anything else if you don't speak to him? After the stinger he is all villain and nothing else and that's not a true representation of the character.  Even on the friendship path, after the stinger, people could still be prone to wondering if he was lying the whole game.  The romance gives us the perspective needed to understand the character, most of us KNEW without a doubt that he was in love with Lavellan by the end of the game, no doubt at all, so the romance succeeded.

So..get back on your unicorns and carry on! Team Optimism has spoken! <3

I think it's like Cory said, the anchor can't be removed.  I suspect that even if Quizzy died, the power couldn't be salvaged, or Cory would have done so.  Solas likely tried to figure out a way to remove it while he was stabilizing her during those first few days.  In those days before he had any attachment, I think he would have taken it if it was possible, even if it killed her.

That's right I forgot about Cory telling that to the Inquisitor. I also agree with that last bit. I do think Solas capable of having removed the Anchor if he could but I also think he wanted to see how things played out. He's cunning and patient after all.

I don't think he can take it back. Corypheus tried the same thing during his attack on Haven, but found that he couldn't because the mark had become a part of us, so he decided to settle on killing us instead. Since Solas owns he orb, he probably already knew that from the start.

Since he just needed Corypheus to charge / unlock the orb, and Corypheus did, only for us to wander in at the last second and take all the energy that would have allowed him to open the Fade. t's possible Solas wanted the PC to use the mark on our hand to seal the Breach and the rifts that tore open the sky thanks to Cory. From his many hints throughout the game, Solas seems to have also hoping for the Inquisitor's help regaining the orb, where he probably hoped we would then use the mark on our hand to open charge/unlock it for him, so he could use it for whatever reason he intended before Corypheus stole it. (I say this because the Inquisitor clearly uses the Orb to seal Corypheus' massive Breach at the endfight.)

However, the orb broke after the final fight. Since the mark on our hand can't be removed, and the orb cannot be used by Solas, he has to abandon the whole thing and move onto plan B. (Solas needs power? Flemythal has power. Onto her.)

I'm also thinking this was a possibility for him. If the foci wouldn't have been destroyed, I'm thinking he would have requested our help to unlock the power. So what is plan B? It must be truly drastic if he decides to not tell us and absorbs FleMythal's power instead.

I think Solas says it best as you leave the Chantry in the final section of the Battle of Haven, it's roughly, "I understand the strategy, but usually I try to avoid this much attention."

You, as the Herald/ Inquisitor, draw the attention of the entirety of Thedas. They're so busy looking at you, "your" choices, "your" army, "your alliances," that they're not paying attention to the apostate hedge mage in the background. Who is an ancient Elvhen God of Rebellion in disguise. Helping the inquisition because it furthers his goals and allows him to be in a position of power, with the ability to act out against Corypheus. He hides because it's safe and it protects both his identity and his interests.

He doesn't NEED the power of the orb from you if he can guide your decisions and your goals remain the same (i.e. defeat Corypheus, reclaim the orb). He only needs the power of the orb within the story of Inquisition should you actively thwart his plans (which you're not, even if you make choices that he disapproves of - no matter what, you're after Corypheus and the Orb).

I imagine once it is revealed to Solas that removing the anchor would kill the Inquisitor, the potentiality of having to remove it himself becomes ... distasteful. Dirty. A sloppy solution. As he develops respect for the Inquisitor due to their own actions/ choices, and (should they be a willing Lavellan) falls in love with them, it becomes a deeply dreaded and feared possibility.

When you consider that post-destruction of the orb, when all of it's power that remains is as sealed to your life as your spirit to your body, he turns and kills a dear friend he's had 8,000+ years, and Mythal isn't even surprised that that's the call he makes, it's pretty clear he wants to preserve the life of the Inquisitor.

EDIT: Moreover, the power of the orb itself seems to eclipse the anchor. Solas is looking for the whole dorito bag, not a single chip. Especially one that would crumble to pieces in his hands if it can't be reclaimed even if the Inquisitor is killed.

I guess the only reason I asked was because it seems he needs more power to do whatever it is he needs to do. I had forgotten what Cory tells the Inquisitor about the anchor but I had assumed Solas could still grab some power from the anchor to further his plans if needed. Of course I want to believe he'd rather absorb Mythal's soul/power rather than kill us absorbing the anchor's power, if that's even possible. However, Solas has shown us many faces and I believe there is a ruthlessness to him that can push him to go all or nothing.

Also even though he loves and appreciates a romanced Lavellan, that is not the case with other Inquisitors that he greatly dislikes. Perhaps it is beneath him to take the anchor back, even if he dislikes the Inquisitor but I also think he has other plans for the Inquisition. There might be some other things he might want the Inquisition for. I don't know just a feeling really since we have not a lot to go on in regards to his plans.

I found a fade image buried in my screenshots. My two hour project of silliness is finally done. I don't think I'll ever try animating again hahah

This...this is the one, lol!

Indeed.

The animation is so cuteeee I love itttttttttt

Is he dancing in the fade? It must be the fade. I'm kind of surprised he didn't dance when I took him two time to the fade (in different PTs, but still).

NoI 'm not really surprised. That's the kind of thing he'll do when nobody's looking.

MUCH, MUCH, MUCH LATER IN THE DEEP ROADS...

FERNANDO: This is all your fault Guiseppe! The power-source of the jetpacks must have corrupted the City. It's because you always cut corners in the planning phases, I mean LOOK AT ARTECTA'S FACE!
THE ARCHITECT: But I like wearing masks...
GUISEPPE: Whatever, I'm not the one who decided to "playfully" bump into the City's red crystal statue of the Old Gods and trigger the defense mechanism.
FERNANDO: Well maybe if you had come up with a better entry plan, we wouldn't be living down here with the zombies we brought back!
GUISEPPE: You know what? I'M DONE. You promised dinner 2,546 years, 6 months, 7 days ago. Originally, I was cool with that, even if it meant destroying Coryflora's dreams with Artecta --
THE ARCHITECT: Wait, what? I had no--
GUISEPPE: -- BUT IT HASN'T HAPPENED. AND I REFUSE TO PUT UP WITH ANOTHER DAY OF YOUR BACKTALK. SO DINNER'S RIGHT NOW. AND YOU'RE PAYING.

Cue Guiseppe eating Fernando. And The Architect suddenly being hit with the biggest realization ever.

It was about ten seconds after I actually did the math to find out what year that was in that I realized I'm slightly obsessed with timelines.

"How can we tie in Guiseppe's frustration over not being taken out to dinner with the Quickening, as it's pretty close?"

Except it hit me.

They've been flirting up the place since before the Neromenians migrated. A love that's spanned the ages (and two continents).

..Erm. I missed the 'Much, much later' part.

I actually have this image of the Architect being the Cole of the group now. Like, he was always that socially awkward, it's not the darkspawn thing.

I took a step into the derided 'Solas Flavor of the Month?' thread to see how bad it was. (I'm morbidly curious.) I got the Colonel cheerfully Coloneling up the place and Oxie making me cough out my drink.

OXCIDANTSHAPPEN:"Solas' flavor of the month" and "Solas' penis" are not necessarily mutually exclusive topics.

I'm just being a nitpicking jackass.  :P

Oh, gods, the arguments between the Seven Magisters about how to do the Ritual must have been glorious.

"Clearly we need more elf blood."

"You're baseless and your hypothesis smells of elderberries! We need to breed some kind of dragon-elf-Communist and use that blood!"

"That doesn't even make sense, Fernando."

"LET ME LIVE THE DREAM, CORN-FACE!"

I ran out of likes but I appreciate the post D:

I think the clearest comparison has to be with Morrigan...

Outlier apostate mage? Check.

Comes over as a know it all? Check.

No one can get the better of them in a convo? Check.

Divisive? Check.

Hidden depths? Check.

Intense, inconclusive and polarising romance? Check.

Hated Morrigan in DA:O, but I knew we would see her again, in my Alistair FF she had even become an adviser to Celene... Oh we'll be seeing Solas again, he will be a contender, no doubt, but I am not at all certain he will be a baddie...

I really hope DA4 has a moment where you spot Solas doing something innocuous, and your PC obviously has no idea who he is and writes him off as a surprisingly handsome janitor with a head that reflects the dingy glory of Minrathous. And later on in that quest, something as dramatic as the Breach occurs.

Just saw the PAX South stuff.

So Weekes wrote the whole Solas romance on his own, then pitched it to the designers.

I... I LOVE HIM.

On a different note:
I was thinking over a lore tidbit while I was waking up and now I can't remember it exactly. Something about the sky. I've been puzzling over the line in the Chant, "When there was no sky, Maker, you were our sky." The Anora sister is saying it every time I walk through the Haven Chantry. Did everyone in Thedas start out underground? Except the elves who eventually brought the sky down?

Or is the sky there actually the Fade? You know how often in the Fade things are hanging upside down. It's like that fresco of the two cities mirroring each other.
