Maria Theresa was a total badass. All the monarchs in Thedas wish they could be half as awesome as she was. As a side note, it's nice to find other history buffs here
Likewise.
One of my favorite things about at least semi-historical video games is that they make me go out and learn a lot more.
Take Fallout: New Vegas, of all things.
At first I thought the Legion pronouncing Caesar as 'Kaisar' was them taking a jab at how history gets twisted. Then I see mention of the Frumentarii, which aren't exactly a well-known group. (I certainly didn't know about them.) Cue me looking a lot more closely at Roman history, and realizing just how ridiculously meticulous and intelligent the design of Caesar's Legion was, and how the modern-day Caesar in the game set about mirroring Roman history.
Or, more recently, Shogun II: Total War getting me into the Sengoku Jidai and Japanese history.
Or Crusader Kings and feudal politics and the Byzantines and the Turks.
Or Civ V and Songhai at this very moment. (How did they fend off the random barbarians from the forests of Benin? They just don't stop!)
And Dragon Age is a game with, by far, the best original universe. Hell, it's better by far than most fantasy series. And there's tons of stuff for history nerds to give appreciative nods to.
EDIT: Eomie, have you looked into the Mongols? Nomads in general tend to be too practical to have silly things like Medieval Europe style chivalry.
Genghis in particular took the advice of his mother very seriously, and they tended to run the country while they were, ahem, acquiring more country.
