I was just thinking, you know how the first time we heard of Solas was that leak to a German magazine back in March that was all wrong? I don't know if anyone's mentioned this, but because of that the first thing Bioware told us about him was basically "EVERYTHING YOU KNOW IS WRONG." 

 

That's either wicked foreshadowing or Bioware telling a Meta joke eight months before anyone would get the punchline.

WELCOME TO NUTJOBVILLE!   @w@   Pay no attention to the unnecessarily complicated version, though.  I wrote all that up before realizing the writers had been hitting us over the head with the key the whole time.  The "fade" of the game world and our reality share basic laws that are bent, but never broken.  Realizing that would have made explaining the rest so much simpler.

 

Triad Magic is Nuclear Fission.  

Ta da!  The Wife and Husband are the bonded nucleus.  The Lover is the free neutron.  Like all fission, the split releases a truly absurd amount of power, which produces drastic change.  Potentially catastrophic results and toxic aftermath are the obvious thematic bonus.

 

Creation Magic is Biological Fusion.

 

All life on Thedas, and even the planet itself, comes from Fusion.  The merging of Sun and Earth.  Physical and Fade.  And if you want to get disturbingly literal with the imagery of the Sun "dragon" and the Earth....

Generic Magic is Combustion.

 

The most obvious in-game demonstration of this theory in practice is Mythal, but there's reason to believe it might be the underlying nature of all "everyday" magic with respect to the Stone (Thedas).  Like Creation magic, it's the intersection of Physical and Fade- but like Triad magic, the fade component is consumed by its use.  It is Earth and Sun as Coal and Fire.

 

 

The combination burns, producing power at a cost: a measure of Earth is irrecoverably lost.  Again, I'm still uncertain whether this holds true with generic magic's Fade component, which from a certain perspective would be the Stone's literal "soul".  Need more data.  The inferred environmental / conservationist subtext wouldn't be too out of place- this is Bioware, not Rockstar North.  Also the steady leeching of a finite magic reserve leading toward conditions of modern Earth supports the "worthy struggle" theme.  Mage-style magic is still too easy as a means of Change, just as Eden was too easy. Difficulty is what makes change meaningful, worthwhile, lasting, etc, etc.    

 

This, though, is why Mythal's orb looks like it was crafted from Anthracite Coal, as does the shell of her physical body after transferring the last of her power to Solas.  (The bright blue flame graphic is a telling hint.)  Her immortal OGS remains to be transferred to Morrigan, but the reserve of ancient Fade she carried into this world (the remains of her soul, her power) is completely spent. Once Solas uses that flame, there is no more.

 

Choice Magic is Sustainable Energy.

 

 

Like the others, the intersection of Earth and Sun (Option and Will) grants the wielder a degree of power over the world around her.  It might not be as easy or flashy as "combustion" magic above, but (critically) it's universal and infinite, granting every sentient being the ability to change the world... both in game and out.  (Assuming a critical degree of social balance is maintained to make Choice both possible and meaningful.  Cue Solas.)

 

And of course, all of this ties into the Song at every level.  @w@  Quantum harmonic oscillators at the atomic, DNA at the biological, player Choices as individual notes in the Song of Creation that defines their Thedas in the grand overview...

Totally with you, red lyrium specifically as lymphoma with a twist.   Again, game-as-fade: our reality, our rules, bent but not broken.  Blood cancer infecting the Stone: dwarves as lymphocytes, the ancient thaigs as lymph nodes, deep roads as bone marrow.  Network of lyrium veins simultaneously functioning as the Stone's circulatory and nervous system.  

 

Will try to explain thought process, but completely floored by flu at the moment so going to have to shove everything out of my head without much connective thought.  Have faith you'll understand.  Original disease reacts differently to races of Thedas than the Stone because they are fundamentally different entities: related but not the same.  Blue/red lyrium's effect on physical races is due to its essential nature in terms of radiation: energy waves as Song.  

 

Recall effects of blue lyrium on mortal beings and consider in terms of radiation exposure.  Harmonics and resonance also involved, since the more magically sensitive the entity is, the more profound the reaction.  Mages affected most dramatically (almost instant death by internal hemorrhage, according to WoTv1) so strong link to concept of infrasound + mechanical resonance likely.  All entities affected depending on innate resistance and degree of exposure however: deafness, memory loss, nausea, tinnitus (ringing in ears - a different level, but still connected to hearing the "Song").  All symptoms of radiation exposure, but still points to blue lyrium as being fundamentally harmonic with natural Creation.  Strength of song certainly harmful to health, but does not change the entity into something else.  

 

Red lyrium different.  Stronger.  Mutative.  Changes individual "Song" at DNA level.  Codex describing effects of red lyrium treatment on templar strongly correlated to acute radiation poisoning: loss of hair and nails, breakdown of skin, headaches, confusion.  And then becoming something else.  No self left.  Original song completely obliterated by new Song.  

 

Anyway!  Red lyrium.  Creation probably not intentional.  Think of Elvhenan at height of Pantheon's power.  Almost every member’s original Duty within Pantheon twisted into promotion of worship among others' followers and developing relative strength and resistance of own.  Massive pressure on Ghil at this point: demands to create physical races with stronger and stronger Will, because stronger Will = better follower, better soldier.  Ghil does her best, but hits a biological roadblock with what she has on hand. Song can only be made so strong, capping out with direct manipulation of dragon blood. Elgar’nan steps in, grants her access to the primeval source of Will in original creation: Old Dragon God blood, courtesy of Sun still being held in the Void.   Result of this tinkering may be kossith, or kossith may have been a product of combining races with a “beast dragon” step before.  Still uncertain.    

 

Problem is that the increasing demands of the Pantheon don’t stop there.  More pressure.  More demand.  Ghil thinks, “Hey, all the name of Science, right?”  Tweaks things a bit too far- hits a critical tipping point in tinkering with the Will in the original blood of the Sun- an amplitude / oscillation powerful enough to actively infect and change the Song of similar entities it comes in contact with. This is sundering of Song.  Blue lyrium turns red.  Blood of the Sun is no longer harmonic with the Song of the original Universe – literally unnatural. The kind of GMO that keeps Republicans up at night.   FrankenSong. 

 

Red lyrium is direct threat to Stone, but is not Blight yet.  Can dramatically affect, but not infect races of Thedas.  Conversion from red lyrium to Blight is almost certainly Magisters' doing.  Would pin on Architect, if pressed.  Tinkering after discovery in physical City creates human variant, virus-style.  Still primarily a bloodborne disease, but now blood of physical races.  Directly infectious.   Darkspawn. 

 

Completely in love with the idea of Warden joining as semi-effective vaccination!  Totally brilliant.  Desperately need to read Last Flight, as I think Caddius has mentioned it describes Fiona being "cured" of Warden taint with result of complete immunity.  Key is definitely in there.  

 

Anyway.  Still catching up with thread- no doubt others have covered much of this more coherently.   Will try to reform thoughts to add to basic wiki idea when not so feverish and preoccupied with disgusting bodily fluids.

Tranquility, the Seekers’ Rite, and the Soul

 

Attempting to understand Tranquility provides some useful insights into the connection between the world of Fade spirits and that of sentient beings' ‘souls’: underscoring that they are, fundamentally, one and the same in the Dragon Age universe.  

 

Though the precise mechanism is not yet fully understood, we know from observation that the application of a lyrium brand during the rite of Tranquility acts to block the connection between an entity’s physical body and her fade-shadow.  (Or “soul”- the two terms are interchangeable.)  This conduit has its physical source in the forehead of sentient beings- a drastically simplified mirror of modern Cognitive Science’s understanding of the forebrain as the biological locus for formation of intent, or Choice.  In the simplified mirror of the DA universe, this is the critical intersection between an individuals “soul” and her physical body.

 

Given what we believe we know about the nature of magic in Dragon Age, the effect of sealing that conduit is a logical extension.  With that conduit blocked, the mage is prevented from to drawing on the Fade, a critical component required for all magic, and thus is rendered a non-threat as a caster.

 

On a deeper ‘meta-magic’ level, we know from observation that while a mage made tranquil is cut off from emotion, their desire for purpose (the original “fire” in their blood) remains.  They retain the capacity to do, to create- but require an external source to direct that impulse.  Indeed, we also know that tranquil mages do not possess the ability to refuse command.  They are literally cut off from the world of Option, and thus can no longer create independent Choice.  

 

Now that we’ve established the effect of Tranquility on the physical body, we turn to the disconnected fade-shadow, or Soul.  We know from various sources that (with notable exceptions) this half of a being’s existence has very little inherent Will or self of its own.   Instead, it is largely a reflection of the being to which it is attached.  From the perspective of the fade-shadow, the detachment caused by Tranquility is similar in many ways to that caused by the actual death of the being.   Without a direct conduit, the spirit begins to lose what little sense of “self” that connection granted it, transforming over time into something much closer to what we know of as a pure spirit, its core nature drawn from the being it was first attached to: a spirit of Compassion, of Rage, of Hunger, and so on.  

 

Thus what we see in Cassandra’s account of Tranquility being reversed is exactly what we would expect to see.  The mage, reunited with his fade-shadow or “soul”, is overcome by the intensity of his emotions- the concentrated essence or purity of what his soul became while the conduit was closed.  Reconnected, the Will of the individual can once more infuse the connected soul with a degree of reflected Will, the being’s “self”, but as we learn from Solas’ banter with Cassandra, this is a process that takes time.

 

This basic concept raises a troubling possibility in terms of Solas as Dirthamen/Falon’Din regarding the individual agency of his physical body and fade-shadow and the likelihood that an ancient Elvhen version of Tranquility was part of his punishment for the attempted rebellion that preceeded the fall of Arlathan.  Given Solas’ dual nature, the effect blocking the conduit might have had on his independent spirit is of primary concern: not only in what way it might have changed- but also whether we can reasonably assert that the connection was restored in ages since or whether it continues to be blocked in the modern day. 

 

Flemeth makes a pointed remark in DA2:

 

"Regret is something I know well.  Take care not to cling to it, to hold it so close that it poisons your soul.”

 

Given that Mythal is referred to several times as the "Lady of Regrets" this insight hardly comes as a surprise.  There is a sharp parallel, however, in Solas’ conversation with the Inquisitor warning about the dangers inherent to the creation of social organizations:

 

“You must not let false modesty let you pass your power to someone else. There are few regrets sharper than watching fools squander what you sacrificed to achieve.”

 

That particular type of regret is one that he knows all too well- making the evaluation of this poisoning effect on his “Soul” a critical objective in understanding events believed to be put in motion by Falon’Din in the past, and (potentially) the present.   It is possible that Solas continues to exist as a spiritual Dorian Grey- his outward calm and self-control purchased at terrible cost to his disconnected soul.  

 

While I don’t personally subscribe to this theory (I believe it's more likely that he underwent a “Seeker style” restoration of his connection quite some time ago, possibly by means of the Spirit of Wisdom we meet in his personal quest), we should remain receptive to the possibility as a potential means to understand actions that would otherwise seem contradictory or out of character: past, present, and future.  

 

 

Quotes from World of Thedas V1 on the subject of LYRIUM (I will likely use at some point):

 

"blue-green crystal [...] Once refined - that is, dissolved in a liquid or heated until it crumbles into a fine powder - lyrium is safe for all to use." 

 

"If living beings are exposed to lyrium in its raw form, it will slowly drive them mad. It can also cause physical calamities, such as deafness, memory loss, and nausea."

"In its raw form, lyrium emits a strangely soothing sound that some call the voice of the Maker. The Chantry claims the mineral is a remnant from the birth of the world, when the Maker created the land and skies. This is regarding the whole "why does heating/dissolving lyrium make it safe" question.

 

Short Answer:  I don't know!  

 

Long Answer:  Just speculations-

 

So my initial assumption while reading the quotes is that raw lyrium kind of resembles a substance that is highly radioactive- because increased exposure (not necessarily even contact, but just being in proximity to it) to raw lyrium causes detrimental physical effects.  The problem with it though is that heating a substance or dissolving a substance does not necessarily decrease its radioactivity, at least as far as I know.  Radioactivity is caused by unstable nuclei that emit harmful rays (like gamma rays) as they decay -otherwise known as radioisotopes.  All (naturally occurring) elements have radioisotopes, so if it behaves like a radioactive compound it could technically be any element.  There are some compounds that are naturally more radioactive than others though (uranium for example). But all natural compounds have radioisotopes, for example- hydrogen has a radioisotope: tritium.  It exists in very small amounts anytime hydrogen is present.  The  problem with radioactive compounds is that currently, there are no good ways of decreasing radioisotopes and that's why most radioactive waste is just buried.  Sophisticated, right?  So if it doesn't behave like a highly radioactive compound when burned/dissolved, what could it be?

 

In one of my crazy theories last week I was just throwing out the possibility that perhaps lyrium is something similar to coral (a living organism that is infected with something).  If this were so, it could explain how being in proximity to lyrium would affect someones health (possible airborne transmission).  By all means I'm not saying theory is correct (it has more holes than swiss cheese), it is simply the theory I am using to build off of (because I need to start somewhere right?).  Now that was regarding red lyrium.  The reason I am thinking it could be something like this is because heating something to a high enough heat will denature enzymes and other proteins, causing them to no longer function.  Enzymes and other proteins can also be denatured in solutions that have an unfavorable pH (too acidic/ too basic), which would explain why "whatever-lyrium-is" also loses its harmful functions when dissolved (in certain solvents, at least).    If the proteins in something like bacteria are denatured (via heat or chemical solutions) and no longer function, the bacterial cells will die.  This is the closest thing I can think of when it comes to "why heating / dissolving lyrium makes it safe".  

 

Blue lyrium however is supposedly not infected with anything, so I'm kind of contradicting myself with the infection thing.  I realize this.  But because lyrium doesn't exist, it won't match any substance- I am simply drawing a few parallels between things that do exist. Perhaps blue lyrium contains a substance that is not harmful to itself, but is harmful to other organisms?  I don't know.  Someone else can try their brain at this, because I'm having scientist's block. 

 

Regarding the rest of your brilliant post, I can't even begin to try and explain the other effects of lyrium.  Usually when people start talking about hearing voices in their head that's my cue to walk away... So I'll leave that part up to someone more imaginative than I.

 

But because you're an awesome person I figured I'd at least try to explain it somehow! It's like probably 99.9% wrong, but a wrong theory is better than no theory at all! Besides, what else do I have to do at 2 AM besides look crazy on a forum?

 

Radiation! I didn't even think about that!  Radiation can cause cell structures to mutate.  Increased mutation can cause cells to turn cancerous.  So the radiation could even possibly contribute to the cancerous effects that I mentioned in my theory. I was also reading a recent study that described how exposure to radiation can sometimes cause latent viruses in the body to activate and become a chronic / malignant condition.  This could be how the radiation "activated" the blight into a contagious type of deal? I can go research this type of occurrence in more detail if this is something that might help tie the theories together.

 

I like the radiation idea because that can fit very well into figuring out how the lyrium managed to become infected with the blight.  Because I assumed the lyrium was similar to stone, but stones can't get infections- So i was trying to figure out how lyrium could be infected with anything.  So since we know lyrium is alive and can be infected, it must be something that only resembles the stone, but is in fact a living organism.  Now I'm just going to throw an idea out here, because it popped into my head: what if lyrium is something like coral? Coral is a living organism, but it has a hard exoskeleton and is easy to mistake for a rock.  Coral is also capable of contracting diseases.  Although I don't know if coral can get cancer?  I just tried to do some minimal research into tumor growth in coral reefs, but I couldn't find any studies about coral developing cancer.  But technically any living multicellular organism should theoretically have the potential for uncontrolled cell proliferation.  I don't know that much about invertebrates though, so I could easily be wrong on that.  But if lyrium is similar to something like coral, and if it can form tumors, that could explain how the red (infected) lyrium grows so quickly and out of control - because the literal definition of cancer is uncontrollable cell reproduction. Uncontrollable growths.

 

For the song (now keep in mind I took physics 5 years ago so my memory of sound waves is super rusty)- does the song affect mages more drastically because they already have a latent song, but when in proximity to the song 'sung' by the lyrium it adds to their latent inherent song?  The songs then have an additive effect, increasing their amplitude, which overwhelms and kills the mages?  I might be misunderstanding that though. My knowledge of wave functions is limited to their use in mathematical equations.  No one ever talks about "why they're important" or "how they're used in real life"- just "solve this to pass the class".  So my knowledge of their applications in life-like situations is not that great.

 

As for the dragon blood- on the wiki it also says that archdemon blood is preferable when preparing the joining & without the blood of an archdemon they have to use magic to alter the darkspawn blood.  So whatever magic they use, it's mimicking the effects of an archdemons blood (I swear if my computer autocorrects archdemon to archdeacon one more time I'm going to throw something).  So is the magic ritual somehow mimicking the song aspect of the blood, or mimicking the biological/immunological effects of the blood?
