So, Solas thread, let's talk Solas.

How do you predict he'll get along with companions that weren't specifically talked about in his interview?

I feel like I'll be able to really relate to him because I imagine he'll be that person in the group that is more reserved and quiet. They'll make witty jokes every now and then and they will be kind, but they will prefer to observe and analyze before putting in any two cents in a conversation. And I feel like the group overall will appreciate his presence and personality and maybe even tease him a bit for being the more quiet one, namely Varric perhaps.

So, Solas thread, let's talk Solas.

How do you predict he'll get along with companions that weren't specifically talked about in his interview?

So it talks about Vivienne, Bull, and Cole in the interview

He doesn't seem to get along well with the first two, but gets along swimmingly with Cole.

Then we have...

Cullen - Not really sure if they'll get along. I can't really see it.

Varric - May or may not get along. I can see Varric kinda picking on him, but not in a malicious way, so they'd probably get along fine

Cassandra - They are part of 'Team Mutual Respectful Moral and Theological Debate' or something so I bet them get along pretty well

Dorian - Um....I have no idea. I can see them getting on really well or snarking at each other a lot or both XD

Leliana - I have no idea how he'd get along with her lol

Sera - I feel like they might have a sort of older brother/younger sister relationship, but he'll dislike how she treats Cole

Josie - Can anyone disagree with Josie? (Save Cullen) xD But um...I think he may agree with her?

Blackwall - I don't know if we know enough about him to guess

So um....I think he'll get along really well with Cole and Cassandra and i'm really not sure about anyone else

I think Solas could have a huge impact on Cullen's growth as a character.  Their relationship could start with Cullen distrusting Solas because he views him as a dangerous apostate, but then throughout the game Solas earns Cullen's respect, becomes the shining example of how mages could live without Circle supervision, and helps him see the role of mages and magic in general in a new light.

Solas and Sera... Yeah, an antagonistic brother/sister relationship sounds fun. Hmm....

Solas: Stop that.

Sera: What? I'm not doing anything.

Solas: Stop touching me, Sera.

Sera: I'm not touching you! La la-la la la-la!

Solas: Sera!

Inquisitor: Don't make me come back there!

I'm still really hoping for Solas as an LI to offset some of our other male options...so here are a few musings on why I really would like him as a LI, aside from his  appearance  :

  • Straight females need someone who is less bulky and masculine; all of the other options are stocky male warriors, so I really wouldn't want Blackwall as an LI for variety's sake. Even Varric, while not large and not a warrior, is till stocky and failry solid in his physique. Being a thinner mage (dem thighs and dat Solass) would be a nice counterpart to the other male characters.
  • Solas is the only potential male mage for straight females (and possibly bi women if Viv isn't an option). This would provide us with a LI who is more pro-mage as a nice counterbalance to Cullen and Iron Bull who may be more opposed to the idea of mage freedom. Not sure about Varric though.
  • Solas is also non-human, which is a nice change, rather than having both Cullen and Blackwall available for straight women, and also Dorian for gay and bi men. I still see Iron Bull as a niche romance option, so I feel that there should be another non-human option available to us. This leaves both Varric and Solas. And honestly, I would really like there to be an option for elf inquisitors, after they announced that we would be playing as a Dalish Elf. For role-play purposes, having an elf as a romance option for Dalish inquisitors would be appreciated.
  • Lastly, I really wouldn't want all of the returning characters to be romancable. That would mean that, if Varric is announced as the last male LI, then 2/3 of the LIs for straight female inquisitors would be returning characters  . I would rather explore a new character's romance and story as opposed to Varric's, as I would love for him to resolve the Bianca plotline (and I still can only see him as a best friend/brother, even though he is one of my favourite characters!)
  • Oh, and c'mon! When will we finally get a male LI that is geeky/nerdy and intelligent?! That is something Bioware hasn't done before in a romance that I can remember, and it is so my type that no one else even comes close in the LI line up. Shake it up Bioware :P !

Well, I think that is all I can think of at the moment, but these are all the things that have been going through my head while trying to work out who might be more likely to be announced as the last male LI.

I was thinking, and dangerous things happen when I do that.

But, since Solas is a hedge mage with "tricks up his sleeves," I wonder what kind of unusual magic he might be able to use that no one else can?

Maybe things to do with surviving in the wilderness?

So, Solas thread, let's talk Solas.

How do you predict he'll get along with companions that weren't specifically talked about in his interview?

BLACKWALL - UNKNOWN. Seriously, what do we know about this guy besides he's really into duty?  :( And possibly has a raunchy sense of humor. But, I can't see a Grey Warden being overly judgmental about Solas being a hedgemage, and I think they could have interesting conversations about the morality of magics.

CASSANDRA - Well, I don't think it'll be outright hostile, since they are part of Team Mutually Respectful Moral and Theological Debate. With Nevarran religious views, I could see Cassandra being grateful for having someone willing to listen.

COLE<3  <3  <3

CULLEN - Aggg... Maybe they'll get along. Solas won't go out of his way to needle Cullen. Perhaps, with Cullen's change in attitude, they'll engage in meaningful dialogue that the other mages just will not provide.

DORIAN - I think Solas and Dorian will get along. There's no reason for them not to, really.

JOSEPHINE - Josephine sounds like she'll get along with Solas. She likes to do things politically, which involves listening to people and having a discussion. Sounds like Solas's ideal way of handling things.

LELIANA - She seems to currently have a thing against mages, and here's a mage who basically flouts all the rules her Chantry puts down. I don't think they'll get along. That said, Solas's open-mindedness might appeal to Leliana, since she, too, has been known to go against Chantry dogma.

SERA - Sera seems like all things Fade freak her out. I wouldn't be surprised if she and Solas didn't get along because of how he handles his mage abilities.

THE IRON BULL - Thought police vs Freedom of thought. Oh yeah this will end fine.

VARRIC -  There's no reason for Varric to not get along with Solas. Solas's humor might not be entirely compatible with Varric's, but I think they can be friends.

VIVIENNE - Blood and fire. Blood and fire.

Part 4: Mage

Solas awoke just in time to see Dorian relieving Vivienne of her shift at watch. The two mages fussed over him about getting up and moving around – which the elf found rather interesting considering the two usually ganged up on him in most matters, but not generally with his well-being in mind – but he insisted upon going for a walk by himself; he could handle the rest of the healing well enough on his own.

Cole was ecstatic to see him walk out of the guest room under his own power – well, mostly his own power, if one ignored the hard lean he put on his staff with each step. It took a moment for him to calm the spirit down, and even longer to convince Cole that he needn’t run off to fetch the Inquisitor right away. Solas had a mind to seek her out for himself, preferably without company.

It took longer than he would have preferred given his temporarily slower pace, but the elven mage finally spotted her as he roamed the grounds of Skyhold. She had sequestered herself in her private training grounds behind the Keep, away from prying eyes or any exterior windows. That probably meant she wished to be left alone and if anyone could relate to that, it was Solas, but he felt an overwhelming desire to speak with her, even if only briefly. She’d thrown herself at a dragon’s gnashing mouth to save his life, after all; that deserved some sort of recognition, he thought.

However, Solas found himself rooted to the spot. It felt rude to interrupt the Inquisitor in the middle of her workout and he wasn’t quite sure what to say to break the ice. So, instead, the mage remained in place, leaning on his staff, simply watching her for a while. In the heat of battle, things were generally a flurry of action and passed by in a blur. But here, in the safety of Skyhold, Solas found himself surprisingly mesmerized as Trevelyan swung and parried, forward and back, all graceful pivots and sleek motions. She reminded him of the mountain lions he’d sometimes passed in his journeys, stalking wild pigs and pouncing in such fluid motion, goddesses of the hunt.

His appreciation was short-lived. During one of her maneuvers, the Inquisitor paused for a moment, weight back on her right leg. A white, ethereal light appeared around her and down the length of the wooden blade. Then, she shouted as she stepped forward and swung, and the glow around her exploded outward like a physical force.

The mage gasped in alarm, eyes widened, as the wave hit him and he suddenly lost all connection with the Fade, severed from the feeling of magic all around him and running through him. It was as if he’d been thrown into a deep lake, sinking down under the weight of the water and cut off from the air. Solas collapsed to one knee and tightened his grip on his stave, while his other hand gripped his throat and he coughed harshly, like the silencing spell were an actual choking thing.

Trevelyan turned in surprise, then immediately tossed away the sword and ran towards him. “Solas!” she cried, dropping down to her knees when she reached him. “Maker’s breath, I had no idea you were there or I’d have never…” She placed a hand on his shoulder. “Are you all right?”

Solas shrugged her hand away roughly, an angry and betrayed expression on his face.

The Inquisitor pulled back, looking ashamed. “It’s… it’s only a temporary effect,” she muttered, tone apologetic. “Your magic will come back shortly.”

“A Templar?” he snarled, pinning her with accusing eyes. It was as if everything he knew about her and the Inquisition had been turned on its head. Suddenly, the graceful wildcat he’d been watching had turned into a very real predator, one who could end either his freedom or his life with no warning. “Were you ever going to tell me, or was I simply going to wake up in a cage once I’d outlived my usefulness to the Inquisition?”

Trevelyan jerked back as if suddenly burned. “I’m not a Templar,” she said, then looked back up at him and with strong conviction added, “and I would never do that to you, Solas. Never.”

“Not a Templar,” he spat. “That neat little trick of yours says otherwise, Inquisitor.”

“I was a Templar, once,” she answered. “A long time ago. But no longer.”

“Yet you still practice their ways.”

“Only to keep from losing the talent,” she said. “It can come in handy when a mage does go rogue.”

The elf seemed unconvinced. “Why have you not shown it before?”

“For exactly this reason!” Trevelyan spat, sounding defensive. “Because I feared facing what’s happening right now, your trust and faith in me shattered from a past I want nothing to do with again.”

“But why hide it?” asked Solas. He started to feel the tickle of magic returning to him once more and it helped put him a little bit at ease again, but he was still hurt. “Why the lie by omission? If you’d just said from the start you were a… a disillusioned Templar…”

“Would you have reacted any differently?” countered the Inquisitor. “Or worse, turned and ran right after you’d joined us?”

The mage was silent for a while. He didn’t have a good answer for that. Instead, his curiosity began to rise. “Why did you leave the Order?”

Trevelyan looked down again. “As you might say, Solas,” she answered, “it’s complicated.”

The elf couldn’t help but smirk at that. “Try me.”

“The Order dictated that I protect my fellow Templars,” she started, “even when there were whispers of abuse against the mages. The Order dictated that I slay any mage suspected of blood magic or demonic possession, even if there was no more evidence than the hearsay of rivals. The Order dictated that I hunt down and either kill or imprison apostates, even if they minded their own business and threatened no one. The Order dictated that I force all mages who came of age to either pass the Harrowing or endure the Rite of Tranquility.”

Trevelyan paused, seeming to gather herself. Then, she gazed at him with tearful eyes. “I was a good little Templar, just following orders. I went to fetch an apprentice one morning for his Harrowing. He’d always been a good lad, obedient, never a bother to anyone.” A pause. A sigh. “I found him dangling from the rafters of the library basement. He’d made a noose from his robes. He chose death over the fear of the Harrowing or the emotional neutering of Tranquility. Looking back on it now, I suppose that as a Circle mage, it was the only part of his life he could truly control – when it ended.”

Solas remained quiet, studying the Inquisitor’s face as she ran a gamut of emotions.

Then, with the forceful power he’d heard from her so often before, she stated, “The Order no longer dictates anything to me.”

“I… am sorry for my outburst earlier, Trevelyan,” the mage said quietly, after a brief pause. “You are right, and I believe you. You would do no such thing, to me or to any other mage.”

“When all of this is over, Solas,” said the Inquisitor, “they’ll not have you. Not while I still stand.”

She reached up, then, surprising him by cupping his cheek with her hand. And before he could react any further than simply freezing in place, she leaned forward and kissed him. A soft, light kiss that seemed to ask permission, to question if he was all right with this.

When she pulled back and looked at him with lidded eyes, Solas let out a shaky sigh and blinked for a moment. He felt a blush creeping into his cheeks and wasn’t quite sure how to react. Then, throwing caution to the wind and taking a deep breath to steady his nerves, he pressed forward and initiated a kiss of his own.

Well we know Blackwall and Solas have "kids these days" talks, so they must get along.

I remember someone asking on Raptr about how Viv, Dorian and Solas get along with each other. I think the answer was that they all had different views? So maybe Dorian and Solas fight a little about something or other. Not sure what, yet. I doubt they'll be as harsh towards each other as it seems like Solas and Vivienne are, though. I can't wait to see his banter with Viv. I imagine he'll just be making offhand comments about her closed-mindedness and trying not to be confrontational but somehow still being just as insulting.

I thought more about how Solas might get along with other companions and I'm actually at my computer now so this should be easier :P

Blackwall and Solas should mesh pretty well.  It seems like Blackwall is all about duty and sacrifice which lines up pretty nicely with Solas voluntarily risking his freedom to help deal with the Breach, plus they're both older and the devs said they have some "kids these days" banter :P

Then there's the "kids these days:" Sera and Dorian, if I had to guess

Solas isn't flashy and has probably lived a minimalistic life traveling around looking for ancient ruins, and then you have Dorian, a well-groomed, arrogant noble who likes to show off his magical strength.  Dorian might look down on Solas because he's a hedgemage who "ruined his talent" (and I won't even start on the fashion!) and Solas might think Dorian is an entitled snob.

I could see Sera thinking Solas is boring and needs to live a little, and she's all about her network of friends/rogues so his introversion might not make sense to her.  She'll probably get some snark from Solas that she won't catch onto until after the moment has passed, or maybe he'll be cold/unfriendly with her because of the way she treats Cole.  While Sera's still naive and untested, I'm sure Solas has seen some things, so I wonder if she'll ever end up looking to him for guidance.

Personally I don't see how anyone could dislike Solas, I already love him
