Well, granted, we should probably say disney in the stereotype, since all the disney movies I've seen as a kid actually had some dark elements to it. Hunchback and the Notre dame for one. Hellfire!

Quasimodo was locked in a tower but he wasn't a princess. But I did like the "Hellfire" song.

I thought it was disney personally because it was so.... well, disney Josephine is very very girly, and she even looks like a real life disney princess wih her outfit. She's got a duel over her that doesn't end in bloodshed, and the noble even goes away once he realizes she's in love... Make a qunari inquisitor and you look like beauty and the beast, LOL.

I only watched the Hunchback of Notre Dame once as a kid, because it terrified me. I decided to watch it again around a month ago, with headphones on, and the music was glorious, I was actually tearing up ten minutes into the movie just because of the music. And then the rest of the story happened, and now it's my favorite Disney movie ever.

Josephine's romance is ADORABLE, I loved it. Hers and Cullen's are so full of fluff, I go to them when I need happiness. XD I'm working on Bull's and Dorian's romance now - had a Sera romance but I've stopped playing it to focus on my Solas/Lavellan...it's so hard going into it knowing what's going to happen. A part of me wants to wait until DLC is announced, but idk.

There's those recurring themes of "pride" and "choice" again! 

Shakespeare's "The Rape of Lucrece" is not read as often as it should be. It pairs well with "Venus and Adonis."

 

TW: I talk a bit about violence against women in the Roman/early Christian empire under the spoiler.

You bring up how the poem interrogates "pride" and "choice." 

 

Augustine in The City of God touches on the Rape of Lucretia as a political and moral narrative of state-craft. Augustine was dealing with the very real problem of female bodies being raped through state apparatuses (war, religious divides, etc.). His point was to nullify the accepted narrative of Lucretia's suicide was an act of bravery--her choice was prideful. He also made it clear that women who were raped were absolved from any sin and that such acts (like Lucretia's) were not brave. That the (pagan) Roman state was wrong. He even argues that women maintained their virginity in the face of such savagery. 

 

(He was also dealing with the the fall of the Roman empire, which was still a raw and bleeding wound.) 

 

So it's really interesting how the narrative of her rape is used to both bolster and bring down the origin story of the Republic.

I admit, I would hate that. The races are obviously all connected, much more than anyone realizes probably, but the elves got so little in previous games except to be jokes and sideline color. We finally get some elf-centric content and it turns out to be not really elven? I'd not be happy. That's probably why I don't like that conversation with Solas to begin with, at least when he has it with Trevelyan.

 

Yes, I usually run for the exit when I sense the developers "intend" me to romance someone. Although Alistair was an exception because that damn rose... at first I thought he gave that to every female Warden, I didn't realize it was romance specific. Anyway, Kaidan, Jacob, Thane- all had girl bait written on them, hence they did nothing for me. Garrus did nothing but calibrate for two games and he earned all my lust.

 

I also feel perfectly comfortable judging people who dis Cassandra. I understand if people don't like the Andrastianism- this time there's no choice on that in the female LIs- but Cass is still amazing.

 

That's perfectly understandible. Though I do think people should be ready for that possibility, if it happens to be true. Which I think it is, but don't worry, I'm not going to force the idea on anyone. The fact that he looks "wolfy" could be the devs showing this Solas is the Solas. And the way he talks about the ancient elves as his own could be because they were his people people, not just his people because they took him in culturally and so on.

 

And yes, honestly one doesn't really need to have someone be their type to appreciate a character. I'm not at all sexually attracted to Solas... I don't **** on him. Even though I do joke about his potato head They're not even comparable though because Cass is just pretty. Nothing's really different about her.

 

It's like those people making fun of Adele, calling her fat and **** when she's not at all fat. Some people's perceptions are just fucked from too much porn or movies or something.

And yet the only complaint people had about Morrigan was that she had a nasty personality, not that she was unattractive.

 

Hmm. Maybe it's because Morrigan uses her sexuality? So it's a much more conventionally female form of power, compared to Cassandra's stoicism and swordsmanship.

I liked Morrigan - don't get me wrong.  She's my bff.  Underneath all that anger she was pretty vulnerable and you felt for her.  But that's a trope - hot, damaged girl has problems.  Which you seem to touch on -- it's conventional.  People like that because they can "fix her". 

 

That's why I was much more drawn to Cassandra.  It was her strength of character and convictions. I deeply respected her for that even if I didn't believe in all of them.  I think in another thread Colonel actually voiced why I think a lot of people hate her - she doesn't ride your dick.  It's not her stoicism  they find off putting, it's that she knows who she is and what she believes and if you don't like it then she doesn't care.  That's why I love her. Same goes for Solas.
