Dorian Pavus is a beautiful, wonderful, amazing man who is actually made of magic. I'm just sayin'

Haha that's why I'm interested.

It's hard to tell.

From a technical and writing standpoint, I watched Blackwall's complete romance on Youtube. Superficially, it's very similar to Solas.

Spoiler

From an emotional standpoint, like you I don't find him particularly grand to look at (I'm repulsed by facial hair, actually) and don't particularly like his character in general. I think the passion, drama, and drive of his romance hinges on the player feeling emotionally invested in Blackwall. The scenes are well-written, well-acted, well-animated; well-paced, well-set up, and pay off very well. They're very dramatic and hinge on raw human emotion (more so than Solas). However, all of that means little if the player is sitting there looking bored like the Inquisitor on the throne. If you don't like or care much about Blackwall, I get the feeling won't feel too invested in his reveal, as my Lavellan who befriended him wasn't. (I mean, she was upset, but not shattered, and I was like, "Oh, that explains the holes in his story. I guess if I let him rot I'll lose the best tank in the game, so I'd better get him back.")

But, then again, we have some players here who've said they don't particularly like Solas and/or elves, but who love his romance because it's just so well-made. So, I don't know.

I'll give him a chance on my Trev then, I've seen clips/small glimpses of his romance as to not spoil it. It looks interesting, but nothing to fangirl over, for lack of a better term. I just wasn't blown away by Cullen and no way my Trev would dig the Bull.

I suggest Dorian or Cass for a romance with a male PC. I personally find those two romances to be the "best" for male PCs and well they are both extremely well-written.

As a reader, I will always appreciate lore accuracy, but I'm pretty tolerant of any liberties as long as the overall story is well-written.  The only thing that does consistently get my goat is egregious OOC (kink meme prompts don't count because...well...kink meme).

I'm way more strict about lore as a writer.  It's why I'm hesitant to write post-campaign stuff for DA:I.

I'm pretty much the same. I'm trying to write a days-of-arlathan set fanfiction, but I find it very difficult since... well, we barely know anything about it. So while I want to stay close to the lore, I feel I need to take my own ideas into the mix.

My friend romanced Blackwall and she did. not. like. She had serious issues with him at the end.

To the point I almost didn't want to romance him. I haven't yet, but I still think I will eventually.

Well, you know, test the waters before going for a swim :D

I say give it a go and see for yourself, it might surprise you...? if not, you can always pursue another romance.

Just do whatever feels comfortable for you I guess.

(Okay, I sound really creepy. Non-intentional, I swear.)

BUT I AM IN LIKE SIN. Blackwall, prepare yourself.

Apologies for veering off topic, but does it seem like the Black Wolves (the ones with the glowing green eyes) only spawn when Solas is in the party? I did All New, Faded for Her earlier, and right after Solas leaves a few Black Wolves show up on the path back to camp.

Agreed, he's actually a great character. As the game progressed, I liked him more and more, and the reveal and scene in the prison were indeed heartbreaking. Love his sense of humor too.

Bah, who am I kidding, I love all the goddamn characters in this game, so well written. <3

I like Blackwall, but he's definitely the character who stands out the least to me.  I like him a lot as a character concept.  I think it's a fantastic idea, this guy who's relatively normal with a seedy past out of a cast of badass Seekers and Ben-Hassrath and freaking elven gods.  But the way the character came off in-game was a little...eh.  It felt incomplete.  At the very least, I would've liked to be able to talk to him more about his past, and his dialogue menu bug really doesn't help.  I feel like I got a sense of who he wanted to be, but not a sense of who he actually is.

It probably didn't help that I'd worked out half his reveal (the not-a-Warden bit) well in advance of getting his quest.  Alarm bells went off when he was talking about the archdemon; there's secretive, and then there's not having a clue what you're talking about.  And when he said he didn't hear the Calling, it all clicked together.  So then my best friend and I started calling him Crazy Steve because we didn't know his real name, but knew he wasn't who he said he was  While funny, that probably took a lot of the impact out of the reveal

Okay, here's a fanfic question for you guys. I'm wrestling with a story concept where Lavellan gets the bright idea to take a walk in the Fade to look for clues to why Solas disappeared. Originally I got the idea because my headcanon Lavellan is a mage, but through various twists and turns I now find myself requiring some way that would work for a non-mage Lavellan. (It's... complicated. All will be revealed, if I can make this thing work.)

Any ideas on what would make the most sense with existing lore? It'd probably involve getting someone's help, and we know from DA2 that it's at least possible for non-mages to visit the Fade with a little assistance... but then again, it's also a super secret ancient Dalish ritual, so would anyone else know it? D:

Nope! They will spawn regardless. I assume you mean in the Exalted Plains? They chase the halla there, so you'll find them randomly spawning from time to time. If Solas [or anyone else] is wearing the packmaster amulet, they may also appear as friendly wolves.

I once had a very unfortunate incident where Solas was chased halfway across the map by a pack of angry wolves after the rest of the party had been slaughtered by demons.

Yeah... I like Cullen, and I have a female mage Lavellan in mind who I think would adore him once she got past her prejudice of Andrastian humans and Templars, but his romance is pretty cute, fluffy, and safe. I think you'd have to like him and/or that sort of thing to get into it.

I guess if you want a romance that has more interesting scenes and emotionally gripping moments, Blackwall's a good way to go.

Can't a Inq Lavellan.. just.. open a portal into the fade? probably wouldn't be fun to try to get out though : P always wondered why they can't just OPEN a portal out, and not just in.

Well, I have a theory that the Anchor might connect the Inquisitor to the fade regardless of mageiness. Over the course of the game the mark might grow stronger and perhaps it even gets a boost in power after being in direct contact with the orb? The result; lucid dreaming in the fade.

Maybe?

...I found you know the lyrium scene in Cullen's romance to be pretty emotionally gripping, then the chantry scene with him, and his "gift" quest while fluffy did let us learn more of his character and what values he holds. Now, most of you probably know that I am a part of the Cullen thread so I like the guy and there may be some bias*not gonna delude myself that there isn't*. You want a fluffy, cute romance then Sera or Josie is the romance for that. While Cullen's romance certainly has light moments, there are quite a few intense moments.

"Blackwall"...well I simply despise the guy so I'm not going to comment on his romance, although he nearly made me romance him before I knew who he truly was. Let's just say I am extremely glad that I did not romance him.

I actually thought this as well, It seems like the Inquisitor would eventually be able to enter and leave the fade at will due to the Anchor.

I know! I was all like 'HEY A WARDEN! I KNOW THIS' Then as we quested on, I was more like 'Dam dude, did you go to the Alistair school for dum-dum wardens or what?' .   I might have checked out of his character though because I thought he was kind of dull.  He came on so strong with the hero schtick that I waspretty turned off by him.  I guess BW achieved what they set out to though, because I was SURPRISED by the reveal.

Considering the Inquisitor can use the anchor to throw themselves [and others] physically into the fade, I would say the usual rules probably don't apply to them as far as being a non mage. With some focus, they probably could wander in sleep.

I've actually been a Cullen fan since Origin's fem-mage play-through, It just.. wasn't really what I was expecting, but I had just romanced Solas and I was kinda side-eyeing Cullen with the eye of "meh". He just didn't fit with my human well, they made most of your replies to him very mushy/touchy-feely, which wasn't how my Trev was.

Still like him as a character though, and I enjoy the Lyrium scene regardless if you are romancing him or not. PS I think what people mean by Safe, is there is never a moment you doubt Cullen's intentions for you.

That scene. I replayed it a few times.  I teared up a bit.  Especially if you pick the right options.  For a bit I fell out of my Solavellan hellspiral.  I'm so glad Cullen gets a happy ending.

His beard has limits, at least for me it does. I literally roll my eyes about 1/3 of every time he talks about his "past" or how noble every thing is. I'm sorry...but ugh...he makes Sebastian look like Isabela when you compare the two of them, imo.

I just did the the scene where you first kiss Solas with a Male Lavellan and it felt super awkward, it felt like my character was hitting on him hard. I expected the "sweet talker". Also he does a cute little laugh in that scene too! I don't remember the option to get him to laugh T_T. It just happened and it was magical.

I'm pretty much the opposite, lol.  The beardy manly man is as far from my "type" as it gets.

...I may have modded his beard away.  But he's still not my type because the guy has another f***ing beard UNDER HIS FIRST BEARD.  Seriously, who does that?

The Solavellan hellspiral is a bit like a black hole IMO.  Once you're past the event horizon, you can dream about escape, but you're going nowhere but in   Unless you're the dude from Interstellar who laughs in the face of your silly notions about space and time.

I just headcanon that scene as you thinking your dreaming and you kiss him, And then you find out you weren't just dreaming, and It's awkward.
