Out of curiosity.. you awesome artists out there, do you prefer photoshop or manga studio?
I've got both on the pc but I have never tried manga studio yet ;P I keep telling myself I should but since I am more used to photoshop I never do.
I didn't know this thing about a 3d model tho.. interesting! I shall check that out!
I can draw manga/cartoon styles alright.. but then sometimes I get so depressed when it takes me days to do something and then I see what other people can do in the same amount of time.. xD I wish I was better at doing more realistic shading/colouring T_T
RoyalRel, share your secrets XD :3

I use Sai.
Photoshop is way to complicated for me to understand, but I've heard good things about Manga studio.

I use Photoshop CS5. Always have. And recently bought a Wacom Intuos. Those pressure sensitivity levels really make a difference, as opposed to my older shitty tablet, which was so worn down I actually had the pen taped with scotch to keep it together, lol.
Never tried manga studio, but heard about it. Photoshop remains my favorite though (also got really used to it, so I might be biased
).
Here's a link with some of my favorite brushes and tutorials, they may be of help to you.
My personal way of painting starts actually like oil painting : sketch layer, underpainting layer (darker colors), and the rest of the layers are refining and adding other colors gradually (although I try to find a suitable palette in the underpainting layer).
Yeah.. I find it very complicated too. Keep in mind I can use only like.. dunno.. 10% of the tools and possibilities photoshop offers.
Sometimes I go check people's tutorial to see how to do something.. and they make it sound so easy "lock this, apply this, use X and Y tool, et voila'!" and I'm like "dude, I have no idea what you just said".
Is Sai easier? ![]()
Do you have any picture examples between Photoshop and Manga Studios?
As far as I've always been aware, it's less the tool and more the artist. I've seen amazing things with Photoshop, SAI, and even MS Paint. You just need the practise with the appropriate tool to your skills.

*snip*I hope we get to see him again at some point, because an ancient elf perspective will probably be an interesting one down the line. Especially one who once pledged his life to an elven god, if Solas really does end up awaking the gods again. I don't want him as a companion but it'd be awesome to see Abelas fleshed out more. There are playthroughs where he's dead, though, so I don't expect anything major. Unless BioWare decides they want him to stay around, then they could probably just say it was "special ancient elf magic" that resurrected him.
Oh lord, it'll be Javik all over again. x)
I'm not sure if that's a bad thing though... Probably not. ![]()
Did someone say Abelas to the rescue?

I will have a look ^^
A question I always ask myself is.. there is a base/sketch or however it's called layer, right..? What happens to that one after? you just hide it and paint on another layer over it? Or you repaint those lines with colors? I would like to get rid of the sketch lines so that my stuff could look more real but when I do, for some reason it doesn't seem right xD and even if I colour it.. it still looks a bit flat
I guess I need way more shades and contrast to achieve something nice ![]()

Not sure, Everyone I know who uses Sai vs PS says It is easier, it's more user-friendly for people who draw. But It's draw backs for me have been lack of textures/can't play around too much with brushes/no text tool/editing tools besides contrast/saturation.
Here is a quick Sai tutorial.

More arts is good. More silly arts is even better. Not sure if you've seen Coryflora and Artecta, but those came out of the art chat last weekend.

Oh my god.
I don't even know where to start!
I haven't even used a mod for like four years. I probably wont even remember how to not break my game. lol.
.
@Lizasaurus - Your work is gorgeous by the way. I love your art style - that amazing 60's illustration vibe. It's definitely a favorite style of mine. I don't do tumblr because it's terrifying but I'd reblog and heart all of it if I could.

Ah, I see what you mean. Well, I don't do lineart, for one. And you've seen my sketches, they are very messy, lol. The thing is I think it helps me to keep the movement natural. And I just paint over it on a new layer. Basically, the underpainting is underneath the sketch layer, and the rest of the refining work is on top.
Here, I'll better exemplify with this process for a commission piece I've done.
Sketch layer (as I said, messy rough sketch, lol), getting down composition and basic form

Underpainting layer (this goes beneath the sketch layer) is for figuring out some color palette. I also choose darker colors at this stage and gradually light up the piece. (having trouble finding the colors for Lavellan and Solas, lol)

Refining layer(s) Just as the name implies, adding details and color gradually, painting over the sketch and underpainting layers. Trying to keep in mind a light source and thinking about things in 3D.

The last stage is more refining and details. I zoom in more at this stage (in the first stages try to work zoomed out, so you get a better understanding of shapes and lighting). This stage is also reserved for lighting and final effects and touches, bringing out contrast and colors, etc.
