I don't know, but my best guess is there are more genlocks and hurlocks because the darkspawn come into contact mostly with dwarves and humans. Dwarves because they live underground and fight the darkspawn constantly. Humans probably because they're the most numerous of the surface races, and so have the sheer numbers for the darkspawn to corrupt.

The Qunari are not as numerous, and mostly live far north and weast. Since they're so few, so far out of the way, and so physically big, tall, and imposing, they're probably considered too much of a hassle to try to fight, capture, and turn for most mindless darkspawn raid parties. During a Blight the darkspawn has the eerily competend Archdemon telling them what to do, so the Archdemon probably tells them "Go capture those giants and taint them so we'll have some muscle in our ranks. Yes, I know they're bigger than you and they pack a wallop. Listen to my strategy: this is how you take them down."

As for elves? I don't know. The Dalish are very adept survivors in the woods, and elves in human societies are mostly servants and laborers who remain in the city alienages, or hang back cleaning the trade caravans, polishing armor in army camps, and warming seats while their human masters do important things. Maybe their line of work doesn't leave them vulnerable to encountering darkspawn, which in turn don't seek them out until an intelligent mind tells them to hunt them down during a Blight.

Very good analysis, makes sense to me.

You guys are ridiculously talented! I love seeing all the art posts.

I don't typically have good recommendations, but happened to take a break from work and read this oneshot fic by Nebulad. It is really sweet.

Speaking of dead languages.

I ended up studying history in College, but when I first started school I was going to study theatre. When I told my advisor I wanted to study Latin as a minor he told me I was out of my mind so I never took it as a serious class. I always regretted that.

Hilariously it turned out opposite, really. A major in history (no specific area) and a minor in film history.

I ended up with a weird education and a job not even remotely connected.

I have a lot of interest, besides film restoration and preservation, in myth, legend, and folklore. Should have just went for that. Lol.

It's never too late to learn Latin! (Says the Classics major) I think anyone interested enough could pick up a copy of Lingua Latina and be reading simple Latin much faster than they expect. :)  And then, if you get through all that and want more, you could try the good ol' 'Purple Vergil', the only edition of the Aeneid designed to enable hungover college students to translate straight from the book in class without suspicious flipping back and forth in a dictionary *shifty eyes*

I've learned a bit on my own and through other classes. I'm studying Irish Gaelic now because I sing a lot of classical Irish songs in traditional Gaelic and I want to be stronger with it. Not just sing the words but know them.

I can count to ten in Latin though! Lol

Latin is life.

Being someone who is dedicating her life to something like "medieval literature" (6 years of grad school fun/you must know at least three other language besides English/and do other stuff/also write articles and teach), I get twitchy when people say things like "Latin is useless." Which was said TO MY FACE recently when I was on a plane. Plane man did not know what I studied, and he couldn't escape, so I got to give him a good talking to about how and why he is wrong. (Also, the fact that people use "utility" to denigrate art and humanities fields makes me angry. And then I think about how state universities are gutting language programs and I die inside).  DIE.

Anyhoo, this seemed apropos:

From Ovid's Metamorphoses--the premier epic on the confrontation of the mortal and the divine.

Met 14.765-81

Haec ubi nequiquam formae deus aptus anili
edidit, in iuvenem rediit et anilia demit
instrumenta sibi talisque apparuit illi,
qualis ubi oppositas nitidissima solis imago
evicit nubes nullaque obstante reluxit,
vimque parat: sed vi non est opus, inque figura
capta dei nymphe est et mutua vulnera sensit.

("When the god in the form of age had thus pleaded his cause in vain, he returned to his youthful form, put off the old woman's trappings, and stood revealed to the maiden as when the sun's most beaming face has conquered the opposing clouds and shines out with nothing to dim his radiance. He was all ready to force her will, but no force was necessary; and the nymph, smitten by the beauty of the god, felt an answering passion.")

Sidenote: What is translated as "passion," "vulnera" can also mean wound. Ovid uses "vulnera" to mean wound in a particularly painful episode dealing with Marsyas and Apollo. It is an interesting nuance that gets lost in translation.

The translation is from the Loeb edition (you can also find it easily via the Perseus website)

And now I need to go commune with Bacchus and some boxed wine.

Weast is totally a direction. Headcanon accepted.

You have some excellent points. I could definitely see an Archdemon being calculating enough to risk darkspawn numbers for heavy muscle, while Darkspawn on their own might not make that call. Totally agree about hurlocks and genlocks being a larger percentage of the Darkspawn population due to their prevalence within the population.

I think what I'm struggling with isn't the percentage/ ratio, but flat out absence of shrieks. I don't know if I buy them not being around because elves are nomads and/ or impoverished city dwellers. That doesn't influence the Broodmothers beneath the surface who've had centuries to... spawn shrieks. Unless someone is going around hunting Broodmothers like Dragons. Which would be the most heroic act I can image, but way less showy. Broodmothers don't have scales or wicked teeth you can string around your neck and brag about to your bros over an ale at a tavern. All Broodmothers leave you with are visits to the psychiatrist and a deep, unquenchable phobia of breasts.

DAO gave me the impression that darkspawn literally burst out of the broodmother killing her in the process.

I love you. Also, the whole reason I wanted to study it (besides duh) is how absolutely beautiful I think Latin is.

Its just so....mysterious and lovely.

Thank you.

I'll admit the elf estimate might not explain it either, but it's the best I can think of. Unless Kieran's comment to the Elf Inquisitor that "your blood is ancient" has something to do with it, but I'm not sure I buy that. Maybe whatever it is that made ancient elven blood unique also makes them particularly difficult to corrupt or turn with the taint? (Though I wouldn't want this to be the case, I'm trying to use in-game lore to explain such a bizarre absence of the fourth species of darkspawn.)

Then again, shrieks seem to be a special class all their own. In fact, has anyone notice the shrieks seem the least like their mirror race? I mean, think about it: genlocks look like corrupted dwarves. Hurlocks look like corrupted humans. Ogres look like taller, thicker, corrupted qunari. Some darkspawn have their own corrupted magic just like how normal mortals sometimes have mages (who access the Fade). Shrieks... have very special abilities that other darkspawn subspeciees don't have (great speed, agility, daggers sticking out of their arms, shrieks that stun opponents, and even special poisons mixed with their blood), and they're also the ones who look the least like their host species.

Maybe the elves' "ancient blood" or whatever it is that makes them "elfy" (immortality, their ancient society so advanced and majestic) affects how easily they can be turned into darkspawn?

I don't know. That's the extent of my guesstimating.

Now I can't get this image out of my head. I don't know what's wrong with me:

The Inquisitor is sitting in the tavern, head in her hand and a tankard in the other, looking at the table forlornly and wondering how she's going to even start looking for Solas.

Suddenly, the door splinters open with a kick from a powerful, gold-plated thigh. The Inquisitor looks up in shock and there's Abelas, standing tall and proud and ancient elfy. And he's like "Yo girl, I heard you wanted to hunt someone down. With my ancient elf senses, I can find anyone!"

And then he scoops you up in his arms and you go off on a fantastic adventure to track down your jerk of a boyfriend.

That's it. I just figured out how the DLC will go. You can all go home.

But...but I'm already home? XD

Did someone say Abelas to the rescue?  :D

I believe the codex says that a single broodmother can give birth to a thousand (or maybe even thousands) of darkspawn in their lifetime.  And yeah codex entries can be taken with a grain of salt but I don't think broodmothers die when they uh .. give birth?  Or we wouldn't have had the Mother.

World of Thedas says Broodmothers can birth thousands of darkspawn in their lifetime, 20-50 at a time.  So I assume giving birth doesn't kill the Broodmother.

For anybody curious. the DA2 redesign for Shrieks seems to have made them more identifiably elfy than in DAO. Also slightly less badass because their arm daggers are attached to bracers and not embedded in their forearms. Apparently the renders are in Legacy DLC, but never implemented.

I'm not doubting either of you but considering Hespith's horrific little poem describing the process of how they get pregnant I'm surprised it can happen again once they're in the broodmother form.

It's not the process of how they get "pregnant". It's the process of how they become broodmothers.
