Well, I'm in my new playthrough, got to crestwood..

And to that.. Horrible horrible place in which heartbreaking commences.

And I noticed a few things.

This is obviously an elven ruin, you can tell by the fact that there is a statue of Falon'Din near the entrance

Spoiler for size

Spoiler

As well as these

Spoiler for size

Spoiler

And.. The trophy from the wyvern?

Spoiler

A staff called Fade-Knocker which casts a veilstrike which is an ability that the rift mage has?... The staff's description is meaningless, but funny "magic exists to serve man, and some are best served with a knock upside the head". I wish the description would've hinted at the origin of the staff.

Anyhow, the fact Solas bothers taking you there, plus the veil being thin in the area (perhaps suggesting it is old or that the place has seen a lot of bloodshade) makes me feel this place is more significant than it first looks.

Did anyone wonder if Solas drew some of these murals? He draws, he is highly artistic and expresses events through drawings.

And this pure speculation but there are two MASSIVE statues of harts in the middle

Spoiler

Another place I've seen it is in the Exalted Plains, at the entrance of the elven graveyard.

Did anyone see these at other places? My current playthrough hasn't advanced enough but I'll keep an eye out, but I speculate these are placed at sacred places.

Lastly, near the entrance to the cave there is a camp with templars/vints with a letter that tells the templars/vints to copy all the text they find in the cave. I think that perhaps Corypheus starts his search for the well of sorrows there, or perhaps learn of it from that cave.

So I conclude:

I suspect this cave is an important elven ruin, perhaps even sacred. It could have a relation to Fen'Harel (Fade-Knocker staff and him taking Lavellan), and I think Solas may have painted these murals, depicting past events or perhaps what led him to do what he did (lock the gods away). There may be more things in the cave, but it's too dark, and perhaps there are more area that are unavailable (otherwise it's weird Corypheus will send his minions there and that they'll have a camp set up).

This reminds me sooo much of Cthulu... lol.

Oh, definitely. The cosmic horror parallels have always been there in Dragon Age. We're just seeing them a bit more blatantly now that this elven gods storyline is starting to get rolling. Unknowable, powerful beings from the abyss? That's got Lovecraft written all over it.

Dorian: You know Varric, I've been to Kirkwall.

Varric: Yeah?

Dorian: Bit of a shithole.

Varric: ...yeah.

Seriously, Kirkwall is like the Silent Hill of Thedas. Bad things happen there. Do not go there. I would not be surprised if we see it again though.

The only way you could get me back to Kirkwall is to have it reduced to fire and brimestone.

I always found that note really curious. Does it appear earlier in the game? Was he always looking for the temple of Mythal, or did the letter exist from when he was originally looking for the orb?

I know what I'm doing when I get home...

I've probably read pretty much everything Cthulhu Mythos myself, but never had it read to me...this is perfect.

Ok, I think I just found something really cool....oh god, that voice!

http://www.amazon.co...s/dp/B004TYR1IM

Edit: Ok, I bought it and it's like having Solas read Lovecraft to you. So hard to focus on the words when you just want to drown in the sound of his voice.

Is it really like Solas voice

Yeeep. Poor Hawke never did have a chance. Kirkwall is a place where everything that can go wrong, will go wrong.

And the narrative of DA2 makes a lot more sense if you think of it as about three seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer put together.  Hawke and co. are the Scoobies. The end of each act is a season finale. And then the show got canceled before the final season could be filmed.

This. I recall a couple conversations about how surprisingly non-vulgar the Inquisitor was.

And yeah, you're right about nobles fetishizing elves. There was this bit of ambient dialogue that pissed me off so much. One noble talking to another about seeing a pretty elven serving girl, and how he had to get himself one of those. Ugh.

Kirkwall and Sunnydale analogies work. That place is just a zoo and needs to fall into the bowels of hell.

Abt the Elves: That was a gross conversation.  They don't view them as people at all.  Solas - smartly - saw how that can be exploited, though.

How?! Once in bed with Anders, Fenris would never look at my Hawke again. How did you do that? The only thing I could do was flirt, have sex with Fenris, have Anders come over but throw him out. I could not actually romance Anders and get back together with Fenris.

Yeah Fenris' romance is like that. Once you sleep with someone else Fenris goes off limits. So if you REALLY wanted to be an easy-rider you would have to romance Fenris > Anders/Merrill > Isabella, theoretically.

This is awful, but. I imagine the reason is because the Orlesian nobility wants to think that they have you in 'their' echelons. They can't do anything about the fact that you are an elf. Andraste herself chose you...or at least, the commoners think so. But they can still make you theirs. Nobles tend to fetishize elves. They can dress you up, have them play their games.

Dancing with another elf goes in defiance of that. It doesn't matter if you are both apostates, it shows the court that you aren't yielding.

Yeah...the Orlesians kind of disgust my Lavellan.  Hence why she has no problem destroying them with their own Game and sneaking off from the Ball at the end to f*** Solas in Florianne's old room  :D

My body is so confused.  I'm a huge Lovecraft nerd who's read all of his stuff, a bunch of the Mythos stuff from his inner circle (particularly Clark Ashton Smith)...is it possible to be turned on and experience crippling cosmic horror at the same time?

EDIT:  OK, so after listening to the preview, I can't even.  My brain is exploding.

Which would actually make him more of a sub than a dom... Somebody commented downthread that Solas dom was really popular...

Yeah, I noticed that dom!Solas is really popular. I was so bored in hospital that I read two Solas fanfics (I usually avoid fanfiction like the plague). I was kind of curious I admit. The first one was sweet, the second one took a really disturbing dark turn that I didn't like at all. I get the appeal and I can even see where this idea comes from with his character, but sexual dominance is appalling and scary to me personally. It's not how I want to see Solas. Passionate, yes, but not too rough and possessive. Or even downright wicked like in the fanfic where he binds her to him. That goes against everything he stands for as a character to me. He wants Lavellan free, not make her a slave to his desire.

But that's what fanfiction is for, fantasy. Exploring different interpretations of characters. It's all fine. Just not my thing at all. I don't care for smut in any way. And since fanfiction is 90% smut, I don't read it.

I'm fully on board for dragon age taking the full dive, fighting in futility against the chaos of the cosmos. Just point me to the creepy man mouse's black book and I'll sign my name on the dotted line.

Sandal gives me hope of this turning into more than typical fantasy stuff finally. Outside the lore.

Elder Scrolls has this issue too.

DIDN'T! Clicked that so hard.

Nah, I have exceptional self-control ;P

Some would say way too much...

Can't be distracted today. I need to divert my focus to something completely different now. Write chapter feedback to a friend's novel. Been months. My brain is so preoccupied with DAI, I hope this doesn't turn into a disaster...

How?! Once in bed with Anders, Fenris would never look at my Hawke again. How did you do that? The only thing I could do was flirt, have sex with Fenris, have Anders come over but throw him out. I could not actually romance Anders and get back together with Fenris. Once Anders, always Anders. Or so. Do tell how!

Most of the things I did, too. Except for the bomb. I usually went sarcastic-aggressive, I probably did not pick a single diplomatic line. Still, I was a good person and never felt like messing up. For me, making a decision (e.g., to be a douchebag) is not "messing up". Messing up is rather "doing totally stupid things without actually being aware of that". My Hawke never did that. (Except for ignoring Larius, alright.)

I don't believe I bedded Anders. Just lured him round and sent him away.

Despite that I still got the scene in Act 3 where Anders confronts my Hawke about his relationship with Fenris and is all 'wouldn't you rather be with someone else *cough**hint*myself*cough**hint*. Poor Anders had it bad.

My word did I hate all the romances in that game. Eugh. Awful. My Hawke would be in Heaven with DAI: "look at all these beautiful and mentally sound individuals I can sex up!"

My Inquisitors don't know how lucky they are.

I see making a bad decision as messing up, even if it was unintentional, and my Hawke did a lot of those. Still, like I said before it is why I like the guy. It's not his fault that people are looking to him, a Dog-Lord Apostate, for answers on a situation he knows little about. He doesn't command Grey Warden Respect or have a Magical Rifty Hand. He's just a man that wants to get drunk, get laid, and PARTAY! And as much as I criticise DA2 for it's many, many flaws, and terrible cast of characters, I had a blast playing as someone who wasn't 'THE CHOSEN' one. Hawke, especially sarcastic Hawke, was a good character in a dodgy game, and I cannot deny that given the choice I would have picked to play him again in DAI. Because Hawke with just Varric and none of the other DA2 cast is living the dream for me.

Sorry DA2 cast.

I convinced myself I didn't hate them with multiple playthroughs and then DAI happened and the truth slapped me in the face.
