Well, I'm in my new playthrough, got to crestwood..

And to that.. Horrible horrible place in which heartbreaking commences.

And I noticed a few things.

This is obviously an elven ruin, you can tell by the fact that there is a statue of Falon'Din near the entrance

Spoiler for size

Spoiler

As well as these

Spoiler for size

Spoiler

And.. The trophy from the wyvern?

Spoiler

A staff called Fade-Knocker which casts a veilstrike which is an ability that the rift mage has?... The staff's description is meaningless, but funny "magic exists to serve man, and some are best served with a knock upside the head". I wish the description would've hinted at the origin of the staff.

Anyhow, the fact Solas bothers taking you there, plus the veil being thin in the area (perhaps suggesting it is old or that the place has seen a lot of bloodshade) makes me feel this place is more significant than it first looks.

Did anyone wonder if Solas drew some of these murals? He draws, he is highly artistic and expresses events through drawings.

And this pure speculation but there are two MASSIVE statues of harts in the middle

Spoiler

Another place I've seen it is in the Exalted Plains, at the entrance of the elven graveyard.

Did anyone see these at other places? My current playthrough hasn't advanced enough but I'll keep an eye out, but I speculate these are placed at sacred places.

Lastly, near the entrance to the cave there is a camp with templars/vints with a letter that tells the templars/vints to copy all the text they find in the cave. I think that perhaps Corypheus starts his search for the well of sorrows there, or perhaps learn of it from that cave.

So I conclude:

I suspect this cave is an important elven ruin, perhaps even sacred. It could have a relation to Fen'Harel (Fade-Knocker staff and him taking Lavellan), and I think Solas may have painted these murals, depicting past events or perhaps what led him to do what he did (lock the gods away). There may be more things in the cave, but it's too dark, and perhaps there are more area that are unavailable (otherwise it's weird Corypheus will send his minions there and that they'll have a camp set up).

Nice analysis! I thought those statues outside were Andruil's owls (aren't they her messengers or something?), but I'm not as well-versed in the elvhen mythology and iconography as you guys are (yet - I'm trying!). Has it been proven what those statues stand for? I'd be interested in reading up on them if there's a codex or something like that :)

I'll admit, the main thing that stuck with me when I went back there was the big pile of human skeletons off to the side >.> I assume from the wyvern, but really, Solas? This is where you take Lavellan? Hardly the most reassuring place should he have gone through with his initial plan and told her the truth. The place goes from a pretty little secluded glade to a lair.

Yeah, it occurred to me that dressing the Inquisitor up in elvish finery would be an incredibly cunning move - but not for the reasons I had originally thought. Or for the party I had thought to empower. At first I figured it would be like that sequence when you're elevated to the position of Inquisitor from Herald. You're an elf, Andraste chose you, this is proof of her hand, she descended to the lowest of all, and required the very depths of your faith to not question her choice. Even if you're not Andrastian, embracing that you're an elf and wearing the garb of your people would be flaunting the people's belief in Andraste's approval of you and thereby your race.

But, when I think about the Orlesians and their views of the elves, it would be like letting them play dress-up with you. You, an elf in the finery of your people, are nothing a plaything playing at the Game. Your "elven finery" is nothing but a mockery of your people and... It's a joke. Elven finery? Your people are nothing but slaves, servants, and isolationist nomads. They will never rise again. And so this one dress, this one elvish gown that you might have worn in pride, is the only one that will ever exist. Because not one of your people will ever ascend to power again and you are nothing but a doll for the Inquisition and momentary entertainment of Orlais. They'll not hesistate to undress you at the first chance they get - be it with their eyes or a stripping you proverbially of your power.

I can't like this because I'm out of postivity for the day according to BSN.  I would try to say something intelligent but right now my brain is crying over that Cthulu in Solas voice...If he read to me The Mountains of Madness I think I would die.  The intensity of that story and his voice....

Ok this had aboslutely NOTHING to do with your post.  But yes, dress up - it's no different than when Europeans brought Native Americans or Africans to court.

My body is so confused.  I'm a huge Lovecraft nerd who's read all of his stuff, a bunch of the Mythos stuff from his inner circle (particularly Clark Ashton Smith)...is it possible to be turned on and experience crippling cosmic horror at the same time?

EDIT:  OK, so after listening to the preview, I can't even.  My brain is exploding.

Yes, you understand now... I'm so lost.

It is, though a little deeper at times. Because of the story he's telling and it's parallels to the Old Gods and dreaming in the fade, he even gives the same inflection to most of his words. He sounds like he's a little sad as well.

I always found that note really curious. Does it appear earlier in the game? Was he always looking for the temple of Mythal, or did the letter exist from when he was originally looking for the orb?

It appears in Crestwood, I just got to Skyhold.

The letter describes commands by.. Cory's.. Lieutenant I shall say? Samson or Calpernia and the camp itself is occupied (until you kill them, obviously).

So I think the letter comes after the orb.

Sadly he does not read Mountains of Madness, but he also does Imprisoned With The Pharaohs and other stories and Tales of the Supernatural Vols 1 & 2 though I haven't listened to either of them yet.

Yeah, it is very ironic that he would record a Cthulhu story considering bioware draws so much from the mythos for both DA and ME.

It fits in very nicely with his character. Particularly for people who said their Inquisitor might not be good at reading.

Hahaha! Yeaaahhhh.. I had originally played my Inquisitor through that section with cunning and grace, but oh man.. now I want to replay that sequence with that headcanon in mind. Cause imagine, you could have your Inquisitor be so proud of the gown, feel so ecstatic to show her heritage in pride and it's only when you get to that one courtyard where Florianne reveals herself that she points out to you the joke of what you are and what you're wearing. And then it all comes crashing down on you. The double meaning of what they've done to you and you having not seen it.

Makes me question my decision to have not murdered the **** out of Florianne, but in a way, beating her at the Game might be sweeter vengeance. They might have had their fun with you, but you've learned. You will not make the same mistake again. And they WILL learn to respect and fear you.

Plus, it'd make Solas coming to visit the Inquisitor when it's all over at the balcony more moving. He's asking her if she's alright, alright knowing that they used her people against her, and despite how magnificently she pulled off the game in the end, gathered rumors/ gossip/ and incriminating documents, she was dealt a stunning emotional blow. And, it's true, the gown is beautiful. It is elven finery, but in the way that modern Thedas would interpret it. It's not the only one that ever existed. Solas of all people knows that. And he wishes she was free of this one with it's tainted meaning. Free to wear the one he knows she proved she was worthy of that night. He's deeply proud of her - how she hunted those who thought to make her their prey and how she held her head high despite it all.

His getting her to dance with him is fulfilling BOTH of their fantasies of freedom. For her, that she's more than the toy the Inquisition and Orlais has made her into, but a powerful being who deserves happiness, who chose this dress in pride, and free to choose her dancing partner without scrutiny. For Solas, that he's in another time and place where he was free of his duty, free to be himself, free to be with the woman he loves - a cunning politician elevated above the scars of millenia-old racism and ignorance laid bare on her face.

In that way, it's a turning point for both of them. The Inquisitor will rise to the occassion - she'll be no one's plaything and prove the elves are nothing to be fetishized, overlooked, or bound in ignorance again. Solas in that he wishes her free of those exact same things, to the point that he's willing to reveal all to her in an effort to empower her and free them both.

Imma.. go cry somewhere. WHY. WHY DID I DO THIS TO MYSELF. Now I really need to write that fanfic.

*blows nose*

As long as I can flick something explosive through the palace window as I skip towards an active eluvian with my egg in tow it's all good. This is my Lavellan's version of an Anders.

I want him to read The Left Hand of Darkness.  FOREVER my favorite book.  I think I would weep and then keel over.  I try so hard not to get into the voice actors in these games because you get so invested in their characters since it's an RPG and I feel a little weird seeing them and hearing talk in the voice of my pixelated beloved.  This is just too much.
