I agree with all the arguments about why an npc should have preferences but as a game mechanic I do like that in DA2 I could romance whom ever I felt suited my character best and if we go back to a human only protag that should come back too. Gating is all well and good when you have a variety of races and backgrounds to choose from but it's annoying when a player's only choice is male or female.
I don't believe Cullen should have been class gated because I don't think it's Amell/Surana's mageness that made him fall for her but imo Solas should have been a bi option for elves.
That's how I feel too. I really didn't like all the bisexual everyone's compatible thing in DA 2 either. I think a balance is best, which to be fair, we do have.
I think it works here now, because as popular as Solas seems to be, he sort of fills a niche, and people have enough choices for males otherwise, but if Cass were actually racially gated... it would be a big problem because all there'd be for everyone else is Josie. If straight anyway.
I personally don't care that Solas is racially gated though I still think it was unnecessary. I just hope that if they do this for guys, they also give us more choices. I always play a human anyway, so I wouldn't be left out for Cass, but others will.
And like I said, she honestly feels like she should be racially blocked anyway, because she doesn't really acknowledge you being a dwarf or a qunari enough to make it feel real.... It's like what people said about the dalish tattoo moment and not having an equally meaningful moment for humans (that we can think of atm). The answer they took with cass was to simply not add the stuff, for time constraints, or what I don't know. But it made it rather unappealing for me.
Basically what I'm saying is this. If they didn't racially gate solas, that wouldn't necessarily mean elves would get less content. It would likely mean that the elves would simply get the most compared to others, and that isn't because there's less to be had in my opinion, but because the devs didn't have time or didn't want to commit the resources to it.
If the only way to have a good romance is by gating, then so be it but I think Cass shows that isn't true. But if the only way to have a good ungated romance is to simply make some feel lacking compared to others, then so be it but I also don't think that is true.
I see this as people settling in other words, when we could have more. If Solas had a romance with a human woman, would that not be a win for everyone since you could see another side of him? It doesn't even have to necessarily go well. The race thing could come up as a problem, like the dalish thing was for Sera. That was realistic for her character and this would be for Solas.
