I have to admit, every time the bisexual chars of DA2 are referred to as "playersexual" and whatnot, I cringe.  And as much as I love Zev, the idea that his sexual preferences are tied to his promiscuity bothers me on a personal level.  The entire personality=sexuality thing always bothered me deeply.  All these things are why I kinda hate when the subject of gating comes up.  I've accepted it, and I agree with some of the reasons, but all the negativity on the sexuality of the DA2 characters tends to hit home a little too much.

I apologize. What I said was really callous and pretty rude.   That's not actually how I feel.  I won't go into any further just know that I apologize for the foot-in-mouth.

I email myself all the time. Is this not normal?

Ah...if it's normal for you? Go with it. ;-) Though if you start sending yourself sexy emails...you may want to go have a long talk with a professional.

Oh geez, I am absolutely with you. They've been confirmed as bisexual by Gaider; even if they hadn't been, Anders and Isabela at the very least are definitely not straight (or gay, or "Hawkesexual"--hell, Merrill is the only one of them that doesn't express sexual attraction to someone other than Hawke). And I was reaaaaally hoping there wouldn't be another promiscuous, extroverted bisexual/pansexual character in DA:I, because there's been one in every game so far. :/ It's disappointing.

.... :( this so much.

As @Kissiebear has mentioned, it gets a weird amount of hate so I try not to mention it. But +1 for TrevelyanxSolas.
It is a disconnect in logic for me that Solas is primarily concerned with spirits, and intellect, and the nature of things... and yet only be attracted to a certain bag of flesh.
It is not that I dislike gating in general, I sort of debate back and forth with myself about that subject. But for the character of Solas in particular, it makes little sense.
All of my real Life relationships, humorously, follow the same pattern as @the Oracle describes. Friends for years, sharing experiences, building that trust and slow-burn... and then one day, out of the blue, you realise that you wouldn't mind if life carried on that way. That the two of you wouldn't make too bad a couple. And then either of you mentions it, and the other agrees. Which is how I headcannon a relationship with Solas would go, since he is initially so distracted by everything... spending time with the Inquisitor begins to change his outlook.
But, I console myself with devs having limited resources, so that story will remain in my head.

This is very much how I headcanon my current playthrough. Not only is it a surprise to him that he has such strong feelings for her, it's a surprise to her as well. I mean they're in the middle of the inquisition. It's not like either one of them is actively seeking out a relationship. It is something that is born out of mutual respect and mutual circumstances.

I don't think my fantasy vagina is the healing balm of Thedas I should feel morally obligated to share or else NPCs left and right will be barred from character development and growth. That does the NPC a disservice because you're essentially saying they're incapable of reasoning, logic, or feeling beyond that which your thighs allow them. While I am down for romance gating, I don't think it should exclude character development/ growth for an NPC. THAT'S my one beef with the Solas as a character in game. Give that elf another tarot card for being friendshipped that ISN'T the terrifying foreboding of The Tower and let a romanced Lavellan keep the Heirophant card.

While it pleases me we that have similar views about our fantasy vaginas, I am not entirely sure if you quoted me because you think I meant the opposite and that the romance should be the basis on which Solas changes and grows. It shouldn't be. It should be the sum of his experiences with the inquisition and the people he befriended and possibly grew to love. He was in no better place or position to learn what the modern world had to offer when the chips were down and people weren't caught up with everyday life and superstition.

I do wonder how much meaning the tarot cards actually have for the future. I'll feel bad for people who were bros with Solas if it didn't matter in the end and only Lavellan's soothing lip balm made a difference.

I'll rewatch the vids and if I'm wrong, I'm wrong. Totally willing to accept that.

I'd be willing to accept a lot of things if people said that's just not what they were into. If Sera was only into Qunari women, I'd be so down with that. I just don't feel the need to personally affronted by what people are into. That's their thing.

If you need Cullen to be into all classes, WHICH HE IS, that's cool. It's canon. I accept that. What I suggested clearly isn't, nor am I claiming it to be. Like Qunari only Sera. I just find those possibilities interesting. You don't have to. <3

I'm surprised Sera isn't race-gated against elves (maybe humans too?). It'd fit her character. She only seems excited about qunari and finds dwarves cute.

Whoever thought up AP style is stupid.

APA? Which stupid part are you having trouble with? The stupid reference capitalization? The stupid obsession it has with putting periods after everything in the reference? The stupid title page header?...Heh. I tutor English and have gotten so many formatting complaints/questions. Today was a Chicago style day, though. No APA at all...except in the classes I'm taking...yay.

Also, Solas seems like the type who would be that one English Lit. professor who's really picky about everything but also gives really interesting lectures...just trying to stay on topic. LOL

She's race gated against me giving her elven gear that's for sure. GIRL, I MADE THIS EXPENSIVE DALISH ARMOR. WEAR IT DAMMIT!

I agree with all the arguments about why an npc should have preferences but as a game mechanic I do like that in DA2 I could romance whom ever I felt suited my character best and if we go back to a human only protag that should come back too. Gating is all well and good when you have a variety of races and backgrounds to choose from but it's annoying when a player's only choice is male or female.

I don't believe Cullen should have been class gated because I don't think it's Amell/Surana's mageness that made him fall for her but imo Solas should have been a bi option for elves.

That's how I feel too. I really didn't like all the bisexual everyone's compatible thing in DA 2 either. I think a balance is best, which to be fair, we do have.

I think it works here now, because as popular as Solas seems to be, he sort of fills a niche, and people have enough choices for males otherwise, but if Cass were actually racially gated... it would be a big problem because all there'd be for everyone else is Josie. If straight anyway.

I personally don't care that Solas is racially gated though I still think it was unnecessary. I just hope that if they do this for guys, they also give us more choices. I always play a human anyway, so I wouldn't be left out for Cass, but others will.

And like I said, she honestly feels like she should be racially blocked anyway, because she doesn't really acknowledge you being a dwarf or a qunari enough to make it feel real.... It's like what people said about the dalish tattoo moment and not having an equally meaningful moment for humans (that we can think of atm). The answer they took with cass was to simply not add the stuff, for time constraints, or what I don't know. But it made it rather unappealing for me.

Basically what I'm saying is this. If they didn't racially gate solas, that wouldn't necessarily mean elves would get less content. It would likely mean that the elves would simply get the most compared to others, and that isn't because there's less to be had in my opinion, but because the devs didn't have time or didn't want to commit the resources to it.

If the only way to have a good romance is by gating, then so be it but I think Cass shows that isn't true. But if the only way to have a good ungated romance is to simply make some feel lacking compared to others, then so be it but I also don't think that is true.

I see this as people settling in other words, when we could have more. If Solas had a romance with a human woman, would that not be a win for everyone since you could see another side of him? It doesn't even have to necessarily go well. The race thing could come up as a problem, like the dalish thing was for Sera. That was realistic for her character and this would be for Solas.

So?

None of the shipping bothers me. Neither do people who wish some romances were gated differently. That doesn't mean they should be, but we play the game because we like it and when we like a character, we wish they were available. These aren't real people. If people want to fantasize about it being different, I say go for it.

The comment was entirely tongue-in-cheek. I don't care who ships who with whoever or writes it for their own enjoyment or to share with others. More power to 'em. :P

Yeah, it's almost like they're falling into that awful idea of bisexual people being "greedy" which is utterly nonsense. I have a bisexual friend and she only came to the realisation after she divorced her husband. One of her close friends took her in and as they lived together, supported each other they found themselves falling completely in love. Neither had been attracted to women before, they just found that they absolutely loved each other. Now they're getting married (thank goodness for Scotland having gay marriage). It was a really beautiful thing to see, gave me lots of hope for the world.

Associated Press style. Part of my job is typing press releases I get for our newspaper and putting them into AP style.

Its needlessly complicated.

I ship Merrill and Fenris.

If anything I would say Fenris and Bethany. But Hawke wants all the pretty boys to herself. Bethany can have Sebastian because he's too weird for my Hawke.

This is the worst question to ask about ANY romance.  People are very very WEIRD about shipping.  Go into any fandom and you have the people saying they hate hate hate how much people do it with every character.  You have people like "IDAF' and just abuse the canon. This is also forgetting you can ignore everything that anyone says and move on with your life.  I

I think the consesus remains that we all respect canon here. We're very pleased with how it was written.  We look forward to more content.  THE END.

THIS. And it's true, the only thing we can do is respect canon. I'd be down with more gating because I happen to enjoy restriction in gaming and being forced to choose different options if I want to experience other things. Totally get that other people feel differently. I just think it mirrors the way I experience the real world, I can't be all things to all people. Not everyone is going to be attracted to me. And I'm not going to be attracted to everyone either. And that's so, so okay. Totally fine if other people feel differently.

Solas can be all about the people but it still doesn't mean he'd like to date another race but his own. Sexual preferences and political views (or however you wanna call it) isn't really the same thing. He can overcome his racism with friendship and understanding, not with sex and banging other races.

I like that Solas is elf female only, if all characters were pansexual, it would just take away the fun in discovering them. The fact that they added Solas as romanceable at the end and still have a big impact was a nice touch and good on Weekes. Even when they were under pressure with time, the character development was still good and acceptable.

Edit: super late to the conversation.

Edit2: and I hope they don't change him. He's perfect just how he is.

Yeah, I loved that the DA2 LIs weren't defined by their sexuality, and didn't even need to have it in your face to exist.  That was something I could relate to more, on a personal level.  I understand the need for variety and representation, and I love that DA:I can tell more specific stories with some of the LIs.  But from my perspective, the DA2 chars were just as valid.

But then why stop at humans? Why not add qunari and dwarves as well? And then why stop at female Inquisitors? Etc., etc. Basically, they have to stop somewhere, and the point they did stop at works well the way it is (IMO). Solas is a good pick for race-gating because he's Fen'Harel/his elf stuff/etc. (IMO, again). Otherwise, you might as well let everyone be romanced by everyone, which means you're probably only getting three or four romances total because that is a ridiculous amount of work for BioWare, with four races and two genders to do work for.
