Them's are fighting words.
People should be very offended that I ship Libertea, when clearly the OTP of the West is the Angevin Ship. (France/England.)
:P

Libertea is my favorite thing ever, now.

Personally..I like when characters have a romantic preference. It makes them more real.  Solas only likes female elves..  Dorian only likes men. It's like the real world. When a character is romancable to everyone, it makes the romance less special.. to me anyway.

The idea of this is something that would have disturbed me had it been in game. If Solas is going to change his views on modern Thedas and the other races, it should be something he comes to on his own, based not just on a romantic interlude but the friendships and experiences that he had while with the Inquisition. If it were something so basic and cliche as "the lady human's sweet words of love turned me!" I would lose a lot of respect for the character and be really put off by the writing. Big changes like that can be influenced by those around you, but should not be tied to a love story. Solas was attracted to Lavellan and loved her for who she was, and certainly that did open his eyes a bit - but he also had Varric, and Cassandra, and Bull, and even Sera and Blackwall to learn and possibly grow from. No romance required. Nor should it be.

I completely agree with both of you :)
Just like in real world, every character is entitled to have certain preferences.
I liked Dorian, and I was a bit sad that he was gay and I couldn't romance him with my Trev.. but then again, he likes men, there's nothing you can do. Solas likes females, nothing you can do. And he likes female elves only, remember that if you punch him he says he spent little time with humans before now and heard bad things about them, so it makes sense that he would only be attracted to someone who he feels is more similar to him.
Maybe, he could have had a story with a female human, but I feel like they wouldn't have shared the same bond somehow. Their romance is perfect to me just the way it is and I wouldn't want it to be different. It also makes him special, as you need to play as exactly that race if you want to romance him.

I think it would be weird if everyone was pansexual and you could just romance them with a character/race once and another the next time. It wouldn't be so realistic anymore  :P

It's okay, I didn't really want to single you out in particular.  This subject matter just always leaves me feeling blah.

No worries. It was rude and didn't properly reflect my feelings on the matter.  Apologies were due.  I also hate this subject matter just as much as you do. People get cranky and it leaves this otherwise lovely thread feeling icky.

I admit when I first met Solas, we didn't get along. I didn't trust him and felt like I had no choice but to do as he said. As time went on, he and my Inquisitor became really close. Not romantic since she's human, but close. Dorian is my best friend, but Solas was my confident and by the end of the game, I missed him. He told me he will always value my friendship and respected me and I could tell he was sorry for what he'd done. He became one of my fav characters as I got to know him more despite the truth. And I forgave him.

Oh certainly. I didn't mean to imply that only the romance does or should make him change his mind. Hence I wrote "help"... together with other bonds he formed with the other companions. But the romance does have a greater impact on him than a friendship, which I'm fine with. Only in the romance does he come close to revealing his secret if I understood correctly (haven't completed a second PT yet). It's when he has the most doubts about his plans, wants to give it all up even.

I agree that it's annoying when romantic love is painted as the cure to every issue any character ever had. It's certainly not the case with Solas. He rejects love for duty. Lavellan does not magically unburden him. Nor is she the only person who can reason with him. And I like it that way. I simply meant to say that I don't see anything THAT special about Lavellan to Solas that justifies the race gate other than unique content that is more about her than him to me. He is HER mentor, opens HER eyes to how the Dalish got it all wrong. They could have done it in the friendship too of course. But I guess there's gotta be something special about the romance to make it interesting. So they kept most of it restricted to romanced Lavellan.

Yay, I also prefer interspecies romances. I often make them opposite personalities as well.  ^_^

My canon Hawke in DA2 who romanced Fenris was a mage who helped other mages; it was a friendship romance, but still...so opposite. I loved it. My Lavellan actually mostly agreed with Solas and was also a mage, but opposites can definitely be fun, too. :)

At the point where Britain is shocked to realize he has feelings for America, he goes into panic mode and goes to visit France to find her in the middle of 'visitations' with Italy. And Austria. And Spain.  So he runs back to America. He thinks it's a little weird that his chill daughter Canada is best friends with Lady Liberty, but whatever. It's a love story with dropped monocles, guns, fireworks, spilled tea, and arguments about Doctor Who and the War of 1812.  ^_^

(Yes I did just make an orgy joke about the Italian Wars. Popemancing and Gallic pride, that's how I roll.  B) )

Hmmm, it's funny. Again, it's probably just an indication of how I am myself more than anything, but I guess I just see so little real difference between the races in many ways. So the dwarves are shorter and stockier. They are...what? 4ft.5 to 5ft? Meh, my nana was 4ft 8in and kicked ass. Elves slightly skinnier and have pointed ears. Qunari may be more of a stretch, they are far taller and have the whole horns thing. Sexuality is far more inherent imo. But still, I agree with other that gating is good, both race and sexuality. I do like it. And if I wonder over how things could be different, i can fanfic it. Canon, however is canon.

Someone linked a Dido song for the playlist; I'd like to add to it with another one: Quiet Times by Dido. It's a lovely and sad song, and I think it suits the Solavellan relationship quite nicely.

I did that too! My lovely Mage Hawke and Fenris had a sweet friendship that became romantic! Would have been awesome to have that with Solas. I also liked romancing Cullen as a Mage. It made it more interesting if you knew about his past and played a Mage in DAO.

I don't really know why people must argue about this anyway. It so strongly depends on your point of view and how much time you are willing to invest in the game.

I personally have no problem with playing a particular race or even gender to romance a particular person (or miss out). But that game is pretty long. And I really do not want to be forced to put up with mage gameplay for 100+ hours to romance, e.g., Cullen.

If they had placed such a gate it would be nice for the lore and people who like to play mage. But for the others it's pretty mean. Combat-wise DA is not the best game around. Where it shines is the universe and are the character interactions, including romance. So romance is at least one third of my reasons for playing it. Take the romance away because you only leave me two choices I cannot put up with (Blackwall, Iron Bull) would really diminish my gaming joy. BUT I also do not want to play 100+ hours of a class I do not enjoy.

But why is that such an issue? Why should BioWare punish those players who only enjoy playing a warrior in their free time but like Cullen best, who maybe never played a DA before (of will after)? Fans can usually always head-canon if they wish. If needed BioWare should introduce some settings menu where fans can choose whether to play by class restrictions or not. But I see no point in setting up so many boundaries when romance options are so few and so strongly typed already (the brooding warrior, the soft mage, the lone wolf, the tortured liar etc.). That's sacrificing gameplay value for a big audience in favor of a few fans who take issue in some character being open for different races/genders/classes.

I understand that opinion might not be so popular, but despite being a DA fan I can also see it as somebody who simply enjoys gaming.

Lol, a story worth writing!

*glances at Word file*

;)

I think a great DA2 style rivalmance would be Sassy Iran and the Roman Empire.

Rome's had this great mutual hatred and contempt thing going on with Parthia for a few centuries, ever since Parthia broke that poor sweet old man Crassus's heart. (Gods, I keep cracking myself up.) But all of a sudden Parthia's gone, and instead there's this strangely charming but, y'know, intensely ambitious guy named Sasanian. And they keep coming to blows over Mesopotamia and Syria, and they keep falling in love for a few years, but then the fights happen again and it just hurts so good.

The, uh, story doesn't end well once Caliph Jr. shows up.

I also ship Qun/Rivain. I'm pretty much convinced it's canon.

...oh, right, this is the Solas thread.

Associated Press style. Part of my job is typing press releases I get for our newspaper and putting them into AP style.

Its needlessly complicated.

Ahhh, yeah, just looked back at your post to see that it actually says AP style. I mentally added the extra A at the end. Yay for comprehension failure. LOL. I know nothing about how the AP does things, so carry on. LOL. Apparently, I've  been at work too long today.

I think that as long as BW makes games with romances and then provides people with forums to discuss it, this will be an ongoing discussion. Hell, it'll probably come back around in this thread again over the next 500 pages. It's gonna happen because people are people. We come on here to express ourselves and either debate (I say this for the lovely people on this thread) with those who think differently or find other people who agree and enjoy discussing it.

But then why stop at humans? Why not add qunari and dwarves as well? And then why stop at female Inquisitors? Etc., etc. Basically, they have to stop somewhere, and the point they did stop at works well the way it is (IMO). Solas is a good pick for race-gating because he's Fen'Harel/his elf stuff/etc. (IMO, again). Otherwise, you might as well let everyone be romanced by everyone, which means you're probably only getting three or four romances total because that is a ridiculous amount of work for BioWare, with four races and two genders to do work for.

Because in my opinion, a human wouldn't be nearly as hard to work with as a qunari or dwarf would. That would be a very bizarre pairing indeed, and need a lot of work to make... well, work.

Some common sense is needed in this obviously. I don't think Solas needs to be changed, I'm just saying that it wasn't the only way to do this, and racially gating him isn't the reason elven females got what they got.
