NJ and Cleveland - two places I used to call home.  Love 'em.  But yes...similar levels of despair.

Here all you are, sharing stories of seedy industrial cities with their smog and their urban decay, and I'm just, "Y'know, Seattle doesn't have as many trees as I would like."

Everett's got some shady areas, I guess. For awhile we had a worse murder rate than LA. (Because they miss out on a lot of the bodies in LA, apparently. )

Ha, I don't live there  I've been to those places before though. Toledo Cleveland and Detroit when I was visiting papa bear up north.

Nope, I'm southern. Clear air, lots of trees, deer n' ****. Though my area is getting developed so you have to drive a bit more out than in the past to get to that. Still, better than the city. :P

YES

Lol I think I missed something  *digging*

Hmm... that's interesting. What does he mean by "make it more affordable"?

What he basically means is animations are expensive, particularly when two 'objects' touch one another. Characters are objects. Any race or gender that is programmed in as a love interest means that kiss animations, touch animations, ect, are going to have to be set per character model.

Weekes, knowing that they were running at the end of their budget, wrote the romance exclusively for female elves to limit the costs it took to make it. It is also worth noting that he wrote the romance before he had approval, so making it affordable probably softened the blow.

[ Just to make things a little bit more coherent if it is still confusing:

Let us say we have a scene. 'Solas touches Player Character's face.'

The scene would need to be redone each time you add in a new character model. So if Solas was bi, then we have two sets of animations. If Solas was open to humans, now we have four animations. Someone has to be paid to sit down and rig the scenes. ]

Pre-Rift-Be-Gone Crestwood/Emerald Graves/Storm Coast. All depending on how the weather is feeling that particular minute.

How does the sun not set you on fire? I've always wondered that.

Ugh. I absolutely hate the summers here. My bf has lived here his whole life and his body still drenches in sweat every time summer comes.

We just got a brand new cooler installed so its not so bad inside the house but we were wetting our shirts and putting them on, before that.

I don't think you can, actually. Solas' romance stays locked in after he breaks up with you. You can ask Cullen to talk alone but he will refuse.

Though I never tried to postpone talking to him that long in order to save the chess game. Still I do not think BW allows you to leave the sinking ship so late in the game. Did anybody try this?

Gonna be honest, I really hope that locking the romance in after Solas breaks up with you means that something more will come. I hope it isn't some weird programming thing that forces a romance to be locked in at some point because it has to be saved in the Keep or whatever. I really really hope that the romance has some significant treatment and/or consequences (hopefully positive).

Another thought, you guys know how Weekes had said on the phone at PAX that he wrote the Solas romance because he wanted to take every chance possible to humanize him so that he wouldn't seem too much like a villain? Do yall think he meant because of the reveal at the end that Solas is Fen'Harel and Fen'Harel has a **** load of stigma behind him or do yall think it is because of what is to come? I kinda want to tweet him about this, but I think that is something that he probably wouldn't answer due to spoilers.

This. I also seem to remember someone mentioning the amount of animation it took for the Briala dance scene, making it match every single race. That's a lot of work! The team don't get enough props. :)

I always thought her calling him hahren ("elder/teacher") was her calling him out. Weren't they talking about the Dalish, and he was looking down on them? So she was being all "you're super smart with all this fade-knowledge, its supposed to be your job to teach them, not act all superior at people who don't know as much as you".

Using it in other contexts weirds me out...

I guess you could say I live in the equivalent of the Hinterlands. Everyone's favourite place!

"How the **** do I get out of here!?"

Although with significantly less wolves.

I never realised that Varric called your Inquisitor, Boss. I thought that was just Bull. I don't remember him saying much the time I brought him through Here Lies The Abyss, and I have been unable to trigger any banter from him. So when he started calling me Boss during Wicked Hearts I was a bit confused. I don't really count myself as his Boss. IB, yes because I hired him as my bodyguard, but Varric? I told him to just be my friend. I guess thats a no

1. Before he breaks up with you - after the Mythal talk - you can say "can i get a good luck kiss and by kiss i mean let's bang".   which is the gist of what Lavellan says

2. Make it more affordable - this romance was put in at the last min. when budgets were increased a bit and they got more time.  Weekes wrote it in one weekend without getting prior approval. He made it specific to female elves - thus the vallaslin.  However he doesn't have the final say so on how content is implemented. Producers and EA do have the final word.  So because of how well the story was on its own and they could justify to the suits making it gated by saying 'we don't have much left in the budget'.

First, I am now super sad I've never picked that option ><

And secondly... I always forget this was a last minute romance. It's really well done so I don't think of it like that. I mean yea it would have been awesome if there was more... but it also really works well as is.

That's how I saw it, I mean, it all makes sense to those of us that either befriended or romanced him.  Those who didn't care to try are calling him the elven satan...

Edit: I mean, after the stinger how would people have felt about him? If we hadn't had that? It's not something I've thought about, but a lot of people freaked out and now only see him as evil incarnate..

Edit again: ToP Solas.

So I've spent the last two days dealing with some intense allergies and accompanying nausea from my messed up sinuses.  I take a nap, and dream about flirting (rather suggestively) with Solas while we're watching stand-up comedy.

Dunno where the stand-up came in, but that's the first time I've ever dreamed of an LI.  Maybe it's just a result of being high as hell on allergy meds, but I will take it!  :D

EDIT about writing Solas in fanfiction: it's a surprisingly difficult thing to do (for me at least), matching the tone of his in-game dialogue without just reusing it word-for-word.  Part of the problem is that we have relatively little dialogue between him and Quizzy that ISN'T lore dumps.  Hence why I feel ten times more comfortable writing Garrus.  I've known Garrus for three games and he has a crapton of dialogue.  As with everything, it's just my opinion.  But there's so little material for Solas in-game that I can understand the urge to flesh it out with your own imagination, even if it results in departures from canon.

Oh, ew! Sorry, but I'm allergic to heat. And sweat. :P I'd make a terrible Bedouin.

On the other hand, I'm immune to rain. :D It feels like you can pick out visitors by seeing if they have an umbrella. It was especially funny during school sporting events because our people would be walking and talking in heavy rain and T-shirts without any problem, while the poor Hawaiian and southern California teams were miserable in their coats.

It can be both, no? I'd say it's both. I think there's more to come, but he also wants it to be clear that he is not the boogey man of legend, despite any anti hero role he may take. Anti hero, or whatever you'd call a relatable villain.Just a well written villain I guess, lol. That and I don't know if he will go full villain or not, so.

1st Paragraph: I think it's for future content - like DLC.  It has to lock in since you're continuing off that save and the game can register who you romanced for conversation options. BW expressed intrest in fleshing out the romances more - I took that to mean they wanted to do more with them than the typical "hi, smooch, screw" route that goes on in the game.  They wanted to make your relationships MEAN something in the long run  so they have to lock that in.  It's not really necessary for the keep since you can fiddle around with it on the Keep.

2nd. Yes. I think he was concerned Solas would come off like he was using the Inquisition for his own gain.  They were worried would undercut the writing they did to show Solas made friends and had meaningful relationships with them and the Inquisitor and people would hate him.  They don't want you to hate him. They want you to love him, pity him, be mad at him, empathize with him. Probably for the feels that are to come.   You obviously may hate him despite this...but they wanted to avoid that.  The romance showcases how truly happy he was during his time with the Inquisition and how sad it makes him to walk away from that.

Ironically, because it was done on a budget, the animators knew they only had to get it right on one model. I think this is part of the reason why the Solas romance is as nice as it is. You get a lot of intense kisses and hand holding that just wouldn't be possible if they had to program it for every race/gender.

So you see a lot of moments where the animation team is going, 'Freeedoooommm!'

Augh, why do people keep having Solas say "ma vhenan." :( I can't trust a fic's characterization when they make such a basic mistake--Solas literally calls Lavellan "vhenan" at least three times*, plus more if you pester him constantly (when he's in the "hello"/"my heart"/"vhenan" cycle of greetings). He never once calls her "ma vhenan."

* Less depending on certain dialogue choices**, but he still never calls her "ma vhenan."

**

1) "Ar lath ma, vhenan." (second romance scene)

2) "Don't concern yourself, vhenan. She is... apart from herself." (Sera banter, if you choose the angry response to her)

3) "Please, vhenan." (last romance scene, if Lavellan chooses the sad option)

I don't know if there are any other times, but I keep seeing the "ma vhenan" mistake everywhere and I don't know why. @_@

Thanks for the warning... I for one will not make that mistake...

I wonder if he actually intended to leave then, at the end of the battle, or if it was something that suddenly became necessary when the orb was destroyed. If it had not been, how might events have unfolded? Surely he wouldn't have just grabbed the orb and run while everyone was celebrating their win. He looked so broken up about it, and then again when the camera showed him in the background right before he disappeared. He probably would have left sooner rather than later, but right then, with an intact orb? I'm not so sure.

That's the impression I got as well. He told Lavellan that all would become clear if they both survived the final fight with Coryphfish, then Lavellan broke the orb closing the breach. I felt so bad about that, because that means it's really my fault he left when he did.

I can't help but think that recovering his orb at that point would have allowed him to do whatever his original purpose is (I refuse to believe it's evil). But, because it was destroyed, he had to go to plan B(C?D?) and that meant he couldn't stick around.

*sigh* I shouldn't have read that gut wrenching FF a few minutes ago.

So I've got a new bug with the update, but not a bad one. At least in the Hissing Wastes along, all of the loot is being teleported under my feet whenever I kill something. x) It did it every so often before, but it's been every time this time around. Anyone else come across this?

O
I play on the PC and that almost always happened from day one. After killing something I'd always just stand there and wait to see if the loot came to me.

These are some really excellent shots. Flycam stuff.

Flycam is amazing. Buggy as hell, but once you get used to it, it's very rewarding. I didn't even need to use photoshop to edit the screenshots, you can adjust colors/contrast/saturation with flycam alone :)

Oh, my

Don't ask me. I don't experience physical attraction in the normal way. My perception of physical attraction is integrally linked with my perception of intelligence, so though I can tell whether someone is or isn't good looking, it doesn't really 'compute' until they speak. If that makes sense. I have no recollection of what I thought of Solas's physical appearance before he started talking, but I could tell pretty much immediately that he was exceedingly smart based on his phrasing, therefore, to me, attractive. If he had come across as a complete idiot, then I doubt his physical appearance would have elicited the same response.

I am the same, actually. I believe I wouldn't find him to be so good looking if he was a stupid jerk. I mean, he can be a jerk, but at least he's polite and intelligent about it :P

Quality screenshots!

I admit, when I first saw Solas I was like "... Really?" But damn, did he grow on me. x) I don't know what it is, but he's definitely a charming lookin' dude. You're right, especially when he smiles. Not the creepy I'm-not-a-bad-guy-honest-please-don't-suspect-me smiling he was doing when we're first introduced to him, but other smiles definitely. x)

He should definitely smile more!

That's an excellent question. I thought it was the latter, honestly, because it's strongly implied that he's going to do some morally questionable things for what he thinks is the greater good. (I mean, he drains Mythal's essence in the stinger because he feels so desperate.) But now that you mentioned the former? Yeah, it could also be the Fen'Harel stigma.
