I am curious about everyone that did the Solas romance in their very first PT without knowing any spoilers (Solas=Fen'Harel) or that he would leave you. Like what were your thoughts when he broke up with you? Did you think he would come back kinda like Fenris in DA2? How did you feel when he met up with Flemythal at the end?

I romanced him on my second PT so I knew dang well who he was and assumed he would "somehow" leave, but wasn't prepared for that scene.

Solas was my first romance, and I came in knowing next to nothing about the game. Of course I'd played the other two, but as I mentioned earlier I wasn't following the promotions for Inquisition at all. So when I sat down to play, pretty much all I'd looked up is who was romance-able and by whom. Solas caught me with his voice and insight, and soon I was hooked. The break-up completely floored me, but I did expect something like with Fenris, yes. It never occurred to me that there'd be another romance that left you like that, ala Morrigan. In fact, I was a little stunned the main story of the game ended pretty much directly afterwards. It felt like it was just beginning for me, but I hadn't dipped too much time into sidequests. Perhaps I'm a bit naive, but I barely suspected anything at all. The closest to "I wonder," I ever got was that perhaps Solas was a spirit-made-flesh, like Cole.

After seeing Solas with the broken orb + then the stinger.... Wow. That was something. It was awesome to have that be my first experience with the game, but it also hurt a bit.   It still kind of does.

I was confused on why he had to break up with me and felt rather distraught. I kept going back to the rotunda and pestering him on why he did that, even though I knew after multiple attempts that he probably wouldn't tell me. Then after the fight with Corypheus when I saw him upset over the destruction of the orb, I started getting a bit suspicious.

And yes, I sort of thought and hoped that he would come back during the party scene. That didn't happen. Then I thought he'd suddenly appear next to Lavellan at the balcony. Nope.

Then when I saw the epilogue, I was dumbfounded and shocked. I don't remember but I think my mouth was hanging open the entire time during the stinger. Then I sent a Facebook message to my sister (who ended the game a week ahead of me and was waiting for me to end it and to know my reaction) saying, "WHHAAAAAAATT?!!? SOLAS IS FEN'HAREL?! WHAT DID HE DO TO FLEMETH!?" and all that jazz. :P

It was heartbreaking but it was a wonderful first experience for me playing DA:I.

On my first playthrough, I was aiming for Cullen and um... missed... big time.  When the romance with Solas died down a bit, and I was half expecting more cutscenes and smooching and what-have-you, I went to the interwebs to see if there was some kind of romance bug or like, generally what to expect.  I tried to avoid spoilers as much as possible, however, some things can't be unseen.  Fortunately I was able to remain as naive as possible, only knowing that something MAJOR happens.

So there was this awful gut-wrenching ache in the pit of my stomach throughout the rest of my main playthrough.  Every time I spoke to him, I cringed and waited for like, his face to explode with alien bits, or for him to steal my kidney's or something.  After he broke up with me, I literally sat, slack-jawed, eyes brimming with fan-tears... I GOT PISSED YOU GUYS. I was so mad.  I looked over to where my husband was sitting and I went (shouted)...

**** THIS MOTHER-****** GAME!

Then I didn't play for 3 days.  I was LIVID.  It was as if my real-life husband and father of my three awesome-ass kids up and left me in the middle of family night (in this scenario we're playing Apples to Apples and there's a camera panning around my kitchen table, Rosanne-style).  I felt empty and sick and horrible and awful and so so so so mad.

In my manic ravings, I thought "Wait, wait, WAIT a minute!  If Fenris, the broodiest of brooders known to exist comes back (albeit 3 years later), then there's HOPE, right?! RIGHT? /heavy breathing"

So I came back, rushed through the last part of the game only to umm.. yeah, find out he's Fen'Harel.... and there was my Levellan, at the end of kicking Coryphy-turd's ass, ALONE ON THE BALCONY WHERE HE MADE OUT WITH MY MOUTH. UGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH.

I'm not still bent out of shape over this, I swear.

Goes back to trudging it through my Trevelyan playthrough.

I avoided spoilers as best I could and did not know a thing as far as who Solas was or how the romance went, but I had a feeling something like that would happen so wasn't entirely surprised at the breakup. Emotional, oh yes, but not entirely blindsided. And since I had a hunch halfway through the game about Solas, I was smug and pleased with myself that I was more or less correct. :P None of it takes away from the romance itself. Or enhances it. It manages to stand all on its own as one of the best bits of writing for having such little actual content. Add the exceptional VO and cinematic work and there was no way it couldn't be perfect as it was.

Only thing I was really surprised at was no actual goodbye, even if it were just a letter or a dream. A letter goodbye would probably have annoyed me a bit, so in the end I suppose I'm glad it worked out this way and hope there will be a reunion in the future. Of a satisfying or good kind. Because there can be one, right?

I did his romance first, but I half-spoiled it for myself before release.

I was in the Solas thread pretty heavily in the weeks before Inquisition came out. We sort of realized something was wrong when someone watched IGN's preview where they were messing around post-game. When they got to the party select screen and we saw Solas's endgame tarot card with a huge "X" through it we started freaking out pretty badly. I mean...that Tower card looked very scary. And was that a WOLF on it? So someone started a spoiler group and we set out to discover what, exactly, was up with Solas.

Most of us thought at first that the wolf card was the "bad" version of Solas's tarot card, and that IGN guy had managed to ****** him off so much that he'd left. Then there was a rumour going around that Solas betrays the Inquisition late in the game. Then that changed to Solas being the one that caused the breach, after being tricked by Cory into opening it up, and that the Inquisitor had the chance to either kill him or let him make up for it by keeping him in the Inquisition. Everyone was pretty happy with that because we were starting to think that Solas would always die or something, especially after someone datamined Origin's pre-load and noted a disturbing lack of Solas-related endgame files while all of the other LIs had them (probably files for the balcony scene, now that I think about it).

THEN some guy on Neogaf who'd gotten an early copy of the game started posting in Neogaf's big DA thread. When he finally finished, someone sent him a message about Solas, and he basically said, "Oh, Solas always leaves. Also he's the dread wolf and he kills Flemeth after the end credits." And you know what happened after that was shared with the spoiler thread? Nobody believed it!  Hell, I didn't really believe it, and I'd seen a screenshot of the guy's message. At that point I'd gotten Inquisition so I figured I'd just play the damn game myself and see what really happened. I, uh, was not expecting the breakup scene. Really, everything after the temple of mythal was kind of a blur because all I could think was "oh god, he really is the dread wolf, isn't he?" Got to the end credits and...yep. But you know, it worked way better than I was afraid it would. Because my biggest fear with the whole "dread wolf" thing was that it would turn out that Solas was manipulating the Inquisitor the whole time. I was so relieved to see just how...earnest he is. He isn't manipulating the Inquisition. Instead, he genuinely cares about all of them, and especially a romanced Inquisitor. Really, that's all I needed.

Create a rift between your legs & pee into the fade.  I mean, might as well utilize the anchor to its fullest potential.  Maybe you can even aim at dreamers.

Ok hilarious.  But you're still peeing into your armor.  Unless you're creating the rift literally in your crotch which...SO MUCH SYMBOLISM.

Apparently for those with low approval rating, it's his face XD

Ah this thread. I don't even mind having to read through 10+ new pages every morning, always worth it

I'm glad to see I wasn't the only one who got super pissed off at Solas. x)

After the breakup I went back to some of the side levels to finish off requisition quests and the likes, and I remember seeing Solas with a point to spend and I was sitting there going, "Oh you want me to spend that point, do you? Well, let's put it in Ice to match your COLD COLD HEART!" (I know that's not the case of course, but I was miffed at him. Still am. xD)

Little sh*t... But there's no one else I'd run around with until I'm forced to. x)

Here's an interesting thought. You know how Cole will start talking about a memory or a thought from one of your companions? We obviously can't have such an exchange with the PC since everyone's story and background will be different. So... if Cole were to bring up a thought or memory from your character, what would the banter look like?

I kinda wanted to tweet Weekes/Gaider and ask if Cole can't read the Inquisitors mind because of the Anchor. If you ask him what he sees when he reads you he says something like 'You are too bright like counting birds against the sun'.

Not mentioning class, first name, or any backstory (or using the default names).  Basically Lavellan without any identifying markers.  IMO it also inevitably leads to a more "blank slate" version of the character with less characterization, but that's just my preference for a strongly characterized PC.

Ah, now I understand.  I tend to write Lavellan without using a first name, but I make it clear she's mage and use the backstory and personality I've made for her.  A blank slate Lavellan is just a little too dull for me.

How diplomatic, Caddius!

It's okay America, we got our wires crossed. It's cool now, right? xxxxxxxxx

Attempting a perspective from the other side of the pond?:

Spoiler

Diderot and Rousseau....yay romantic poets! Just sayin! They were two very different kinds of poets. Their poetry and writings were working towards the same thing, but one believed in reason and the other feelings and imagination....I always get which is which confused....I think Diderot is reason....He is the one that got arrested for the encyclopedia right?!

Yes, poets are what I pulled from the long informative post.

The only info I had about Solas when I started the game was this interview with Weekes and that he's romancable only by female elves. So I wasn't suspicious at all at first. The only warning bells were that he's an apostate who's very attached to the Fade, but hey I'd come across enough apostates through the series that I didn't think too much about it, just thought it was interesting and left it at that. I didn't think his I-learned-everything-from-the-Fade shtick was weird either. I mean, the Fade is where all of Thedas's memories and emotions are stored, and it's also the source of all things magical. It's a reasonable enough source of knowledge if you're a mage and you know how and where to look.

I think the first time I had the notion that Solas was something more was when I took him to the Fallow Mire with Blackwall, and he revealed that he had apparently seen a lot of wars. And the way he said it, it felt personal, like he actually fought in them instead of just seeing them in the Fade. And where could an elven apostate have fought a war, except for the mage rebellion? Only he was never part of the Circle, and in a banter with Cassandra said he had never encountered a templar before.

But that wasn't much to go by, and I eventually lost that trail of thought while Inquisiting.

Then What Pride Had Wrought happened, and that's when it entered my mind. Could Solas have been an ancient elf? It wasn't a possibility before, but now that I was seeing actual ancient elves, could Solas be one of them? Things started clicking into place. And then when he revealed what the vallaslin was, I thought, aha! So that's why he was so adamant about refusing the well. He was probably noble born, since he didn't have the slave markings, and going by his convos with Bull he hated slavery, so he didn't want to end up as one by drinking the well.

And then the breakup happened, and my brain went into overdrive trying to make sense of it. But I couldn't. There wasn't enough information.

And then it turned out he was Fen'Harel.

Holy ****** **** I had no ****** clue.

I went from all sad because he'd left, to pacing about the room with my eyes still misty, not thinking about anything in particular, just going holy **** holy **** holy **** in my mind over and over again.

So I'm writing this FF... And the thought occurs to me... There is no indoor plumbing in Skyhold... And yeah, I recall indoor plumbing in DA:O (in DA2, no), and there should at least be a bathhouse... Which itself would be a good FF scenario... Imagine, say Viv, meeting Solas there [this is my idea!], after she's trashed the little elven hobo...

I think Oxie already figured out how the ancient elves at Skyhold did their plumbing.  Maybe the humans who built modern Skyhold after them tried to follow their example, but instead of the Fade, they used the walls?

You know what fact about medieval military life (and armies in general) left out?

Food, water, and waste. On a massive, mind-boggling scale. And all the disgusting diseases that begin to spread when you have a giant gathering of soldiers and camp-followers, all without proper hyigene.

:( As a germaphobe I'd rather face Greek fire than the filth.

(That's a lie no one prefers to face Greek fire.)

I wonder if the Qunari have the Greek fire equivalent... ^_^

Since a discussion of certain prominent butts features has come around, may I ask which of Solas's features you all find most striking? It can be something in his personality or a physical attribute--or both, really.

I've already mentioned like a billion times that the thing I find most beautiful about Solas is his intelligence, but physically (and this is going to sound strange probably) my favorite part of his face is his jawline. Like... Where it connects to his neck. Idk why. For some reason I find it very sexy. Also his shoulders. Just that whole area around his neck, really.

What is gaatlok by the way?

When I took the Tempest spec, Bull commented that Southern Thedas was apparently closer to making gaatlok than we thought. But Tempests use flasks, and I'd always assumed gaatlok was something like gunpowder.

I worked out that he was hiding a lot from the player. I thought he was an ancient elf and knew more about the Conclave than he was letting on, but the Dread Wolf and leaving for good part?  I did not see that coming.  At all.  I thought there would be a scene with Solas and Lavellan at the end of the game so her standing on her own really surprised me.  I did learn about the dumping scene (but avoided all details) so I didn't know it happened at Crestwood.  I thought that scene was leading into the sex scene.  It's why I took the 'you have to be kidding me' option the first time I played because both Lavellan and I were completely shocked by this.  The very end scene just left me staring at my screen and mouthing 'what?'

[PATRICK WEEKES]: He’s pretty straightforward, honestly. Just your average elven apostate who voluntarily joins the Inquisition in the middle of the mage rebellion to lend his expertise with the Fade

Was it ever confirmed to be powder though, or does Southern Thedas just assume it is? The Qunari keep the recipe secret after all.

When I took the Tempest spec, Bull commented that Southern Thedas was apparently closer to making gaatlok than we thought. But Tempests use flasks, and I'd always assumed gaatlok was something like gunpowder.

I'm pretty sure gaatlok is the means of using ingredients Theodosians already use. Namely, the gaatlok is canon, firepower, etcetera. (Theorizing, here.) I haven't played a Tempest yet, but I'm guessing he means that Theodosians are taking up non-magic alchemy, and that's how the Qunari found gaatlok. It's similar to the legends of the Chinese alchemists trying to make potions of immortality or turn lead into gold. They failed, but in their failures, they discovered tons of information.

So gaatlok is either the prepared gunpowder or the canons themselves, I guess. (Though isn't Adaar the name for canon?  Guess I'm just talking out of my ass.)

After all, Anders uses similar ingredients in his bomb, doesn't he?

EDIT:

Potassium nitrate: Also known as sal petrae or Saltpetre. He asks for Sela petrae, and Tevene is faux-Latin.

Sulfur:

Both of these are ingredients in black powder, aren't they? I have a very limited understanding of the mechanics involved.

I can tell you all about pike-and-shot warfare using gunpowder, though. :P

Oh, I'm not the person to ask because I spoilered myself, I wanted to be prepared, I'm glad that I did, I'm not sure how I would have reacted if I'd gone in blind, I was already shellshocked for a few days so I think I did myself a favour.  I know there are others here who didn't get spoiled though.

Edit: Actually I remember when the big spoiler hit us here, myself and some others were pretty upset about it, not the the fact that it was spoiled, the spoiler itself.
