If you and the Colonel are conspiring to ruin ice cream for me, you have failed, as so many before you have.

You have, however, ruined all tongues not in the Fade.

This just makes me want icecream even more tbh.

Oh, ew! Sorry, but I'm allergic to heat. And sweat. :P I'd make a terrible Bedouin.

On the other hand, I'm immune to rain. :D It feels like you can pick out visitors by seeing if they have an umbrella. It was especially funny during school sporting events because our people would be walking and talking in heavy rain and T-shirts without any problem, while the poor Hawaiian and southern California teams were miserable in their coats.

Where are you from? That sounds a lot like me and I've always wondered where "my people" are :)

I was thinking... more or less... if Weekes had not 'humanized' him, we would get to the end and go. "WTF? So we were just a pawn in his elven chess game this whole time? What a douche." But we don't do that because we come to the understanding that Solas really loves, cares about, and cherishes pawns, and only utilizes them because he has the understanding that their percieved 'weakness' gives them greater value.

So this is particularly interesting because of the chess game with Bull (don't click if you don't want to know how it ends):

This actually makes me think that this is what Solas would've sort of looked like if Bioware stuck with the DA2 elf models, big eyes and all. xD

The others though...

Actually, I think that chess game is an incredibly important read of his character and was written that way - Weekes wrote both Bull and Solas.  In a less optimistic view of it - he's willing to sacrafice A LOT to win.  He nearly wiped out his own side in an effort to get the most unassuming piece to the end.

I was just reading some stuff about Proto Indo-European Tribes (because that's how I calm myself into a state fit to sleep, of course. :P ) and found mention of how it's hypothesized that a three caste system was common in the PIE tribes. Priests, peasants, and warriors. These warriors would consist of young, single men who existed somewhat outside of the tribe's normal structure. They frequently identified themselves with wolves or dogs. The Norse berserkers and legends of werewolves are tied to this origin story in this interpretation. Granted, a lot of PIE theories rest on shaky legs, just because of how far back it was. But I just liked how it tied in with the Dread Wolf's military experience and being set apart from the other Creators. :)

Posts like this make me wish I could share some ancient Filipino myths and stories too, but it wouldn't be related to DA's Tolkien base at all. One more reason I sympathize with the Dalish I suppose . "We have our own stories"

LOL just to clarify... I meant bugs, lol. He was talking about bugs XD He grew up on a farm, and pest control wasn't much of a thing back in the 30's and on, so something crawling in your mouth at night was especially a thing back then.

Eurgh. All hail technology.

Spoiler

This plus his preference for the lower classes (even his disguises are as unassuming pawns: apostate hobo; manservant) really make me itch for more of his backstory. He's obviously got a lot of sympathy for the lower classes, but he doesn't mind manipulating them either. So was he born as a noble, and through some event started sympathizing with the slaves, or was he a slave or a commoner who rose up through the ranks into godhood?

The thirst is real.

Grumpy Solas is grumpy.

Is it weird that I either find his angry either a) adorable or b, slightly arousing?

Nope, not in the slightest. Why can't I BREATHE right now? *fans self*

No idea. I guess when you're from the south you have to put ice in your drink, so that's what I was used to. If I asked for ice in my soda, I'd get maybe one cube. Grudgingly.

Sometimes I have to wonder if the Orlesians are an over-the-top French parody, or a reliable portrayal.

Hrm.

Nah. Orlesians still suck more.

I agree. Bioware provided so many insights and hints at Solas' character, this is clearly a very intentionally constructed scene used to demonstrate that every move matters and even a pawn can change everything. *sob*

Who needs tech and pesticides when you can just grow a beard? If any bugs get past, it'll tickle your beard and wake you up!

That's why blackwall can sleep in the barn.

Solas probably leaves mini lightning mines or something. Or just eats 'em. Good protein and apostate hobos don't make a lot of coin after all. Who turns down a free meal?

"Now, how about that fade tongue, hmmm?"

Orlesians suck more, but every once in awhile you get a glimmer of that French Terror. When Kordillus Drakon was leading them, definitely. :D

Please, share your Filipino mythology and background. This is the Solas thread, we're all about learning from different cultures. I'm a big believer in applicability. We will find a way to connect it to Solas. :P

Arlee, your people are from the US state of Washington. Specifically, the side west of the Cascades, where rain and gloom are kind of our thing. :)

Plus there's the fact that no-one who thinks of themselves as important tends to take any notice of the lower classes... Significantly it's Dorry and Viv who criticise his dress because he's lowering the tone, no-one else has a problem...

Ah, Filipino myths and stories. :) One of the reasons why I got attracted to playing the Dalish is that in a way, they reminded me of the Pintados ("painted" or the "painted ones" as the Spaniards called them, for those not in the know). Them tattoos. ;)

EDIT: Not to mention the whole "lost culture" thing and being subjugated by a bigger, foreign power. :(

Oh, I'm not the person to ask because I spoilered myself, I wanted to be prepared, I'm glad that I did, I'm not sure how I would have reacted if I'd gone in blind, I was already shellshocked for a few days so I think I did myself a favour.  I know there are others here who didn't get spoiled though.

Edit: Actually I remember when the big spoiler hit us here, myself and some others were pretty upset about it, not the the fact that it was spoiled, the spoiler itself.

Hahaha, yeah, I remember that. You were in the spoiler thread too iirc.

By the way, the 90-something page thread discussing Solas spoilers is still there (I think you just have to join the group to see it). Re-reading it now, with everything we know, is hilarious. It really gets good around page 20 where the whole "solas is fen'harel" theory first comes up. And people are really not into it.   Oh man, here's a post that I made on page 26.

But yeah, I really didn't think Bioware would go there. >.>

I do think it's a good thing that they're finally addressing the nuts and bolts of their universe. I was annoyed at how vague Origins left things, and ditto for DA2.

Though, uh, your nerdy elf boyfriend being the Dread Wolf wasn't really something I was imagining.

You know, in a way, the Inquisitor is a lot like that pawn. You start out as a nobody, but are moved into a position where you affect the entire world, through the machinations of powerful beings. And Solas is willing to sacrifice more important pieces (Flemeth?) in order to get that pawn to the end.

Oh hey yeah. Though the Pintados's tattoos were marks of valor and nobility, thankfully, instead of signs of adulthood or god forbid slavery.

Still finding absolute gold in this thread (from page 28).

Aaaand then I went to the Solas thread and people are talking about butts.

It seems almost...disrespectful now. Like, that might possibly be a god's butt that you're checking out?

Is thinking that one of your gods has a great ass sacrilege or something?

"If I said you have a great body would you smite me for my insolence?"
