Though Solas...ugh.  I've done trainwreck, and nothing has destroyed my feels as badly as Solas.  I knew he was going to leave.  I knew he was the Dread Wolf, and that breakup still killed me.

I also knew he was the dread wolf (well, "knew", I was still kinda skeptical when I actually started playing the game. I kept telling myself, "pssh, it was probably 4chan trolling us, there's no way Solas is the dread wolf"). And I knew he left at the end. But I had no idea of any of the circumstances. I was convinced for the longest time that he was totally gonna tell lavellan what was up and then leave. I was...very very sad when he didn't. Especially since it seemed like he was going to do just that in the final romance scene! I was all, "ok, here it is. He's gonna tell her." And then...nope.

I might be in the minority opinion here, but I don't really see a difference between Solas the Fade Nerd and Solas the Dread Wolf.  He lied about what he was and where he came from, but not about who he was as a person.  And if you pick the snarky/bitter dialogue option with him post-breakup, I think he's telling the truth when he says that Lavellan saw more of who he was than most.

Whatever name he uses, he's still the same complicated person.  I think that's part of why he's so bitter about the Dalish, that they've simplified the Dread Wolf into this monster.

This.  So much this.  This is actually why I'm Team Solas is Actually Fen'Harel Not Possessed By Fen'Harel (it needs a better team name...) because if there was the possibility that the parts of Solas I love come from two seperate but now merged beings (Solas and Fen'Harel) then he loses what makes him him.  The Solasness.  Or Solassness, if you like.

And instead of being this big scary monster, the Dread Wolf is actually rather cuddly when you get to know him. That's the kind of subversion of an already-established story that I just love. Turns out it wasn't Solas we'd been mistaken about, but fen'harel.

The Dread Wolf loves frilly Orlesian cakes, gets tipsy rather quickly, dominates at Diamondback, reads Varric's trashy serials, kisses like a boss, and has the most adorable laugh in all of Thedas.  Now why wasn't all that in the Dalish legends?

Just curious, who did you romance for DA:O and who was your warden? Just wondering if I should run my choice of prospective LIs by you first to see if they click your tragedy meter next game

LOL, my BFF uses me as her tragedy meter.  She has much better luck picking LIs than I do, though we both initially jumped on the Anders train.  She later changed her mind and went for Fenris.

As for DA:O, I had two complete playthroughs.  Canon one with Amell and Warden!Alistair; I literally stumbled upon the happy-ish ending there, at least until DA:I where Alistair marches off to Weisshaupt.  My second playthrough was with Tabris who sacrificed herself, and Zevran.  And that was all the tears  :crying:

I did ok on ME, though.  Garrus.  Still the best digital boyfriend

Yeah. It was so beautifully foreshadowed that I highly doubt he's just some random elf who's possessed. His experiences have shaped who he is, and pretty much everything he says makes sense in the context of him being fen'harel (though who fen'harel is is way different than we'd thought).

Unrelated question. In Stolen Throne a Dalish mage is introduced with a magical amulet, is he supposed to be the dalish wardenns dad?

I also don't buy into the 'elven gods body hopped all the time' theory, either.  Mythal seems to be a speical case.  Besides, elves were immortal, why would they need to body hop?

And I love the contrast between the Dalish legends and what Fen'Harel is actually like (I couldn't help giggling when Tamlen said he was an 'evil god' when I replayed DAO, or when Merrill says that Fen'Harel hates wisdom and kindness.)

When I actually started playing the game and the evidence of both Solas being the Dread Wolf and Solas being the most goddamn adorable thing ever started piling up, I'd stare at the screen for long moments just thinking, "how is this even possible?" Well played, Bioware.

That's what I assumed.  As Bioware's default is a Dalish warrior it makes sense to have her dad in the book.

@flabbadence - Yes! Weird like system, is weird. And stingy.

nnxaidi.gif?w=622&h=471

(and "yes" on still going for the Solasmance, even when you know the cliff is approaching - THELMA & LOUISE_STYLE! )

Since we were discussing Skyrim a few days ago in the thread, does Solas remind anyone else of Paarthurnax? I get that vibe of "I f***ed up bad before and now I need to atone" from both of them. Though Paarthurnax has his s*** together a lot better than Solas.

@Sable - I totally see this....in a way. But dammit! I had a mod to "fix" that situation (*paarthurnax dilemma ftw*). Here, have a haughty Maggie. Cuz I likes. B)

Thats pretty cool. I was quite disapointed Cousland's dad didn't show up, but I guess he was too young, like Eamon.

Except he isn't.  Solas is made up of his experiences and they shaped the person he is.  If you seperated him and got the evil Dread Wolf of the legends and a fade nerd apostate then he'd stop being the character I love.

Nonononono... I was just getting hopeful again. I don't wanna start on this spiral again because I am pretty sure he would hate himself for doing it but he would totally sacrifice anyone and anything to do whatever it is he thinks is "right".

Agree to some extent, but also can't help remembering his disapproval when my Lavellan responded to the idea of abandoning Haven with "I'll sacrifice myself if it will help you all get away" (paraphrasing).

This would have been so much easier if I could have hated him.

I'm glad they did it that way.  You can see - a little - how the Dread Wolf name possibly came about and I imagine we'll learn a lot more about his past to underscore that, but now he's just thoughtful, scrunchy-nosed Solas.  I'm happy they didn't go all creepy-slutty-Zeus route with him which seems to be the case with Gods befriends/loves mortals stories.  SIDE NOTE: When you put it that way I feel my Lavellan would almost be a bit amused when the initial shock wears off because for her he was never "Dread".

A question by the way, maybe a little pointless but I'm just curious what you guys think:

How do you think Fen'Harel was friends with the Forgotten Ones? According to Andruil's codex, even gods shouldn't stay in the Void for long. So how did Solas manage to strike a friendship with creatures from the Void, since I doubt they were free to wander around Arlathan too?

He told them that he was fed up of the old gods, that they were tyrannical and spoilt and behaved like little children, that they had lost the ambition (if they ever had it to rule) and were weak and he had grown to despise them... It was time they were replaced...

This was all true.

Why would you separate what makes a person them though? Fen'harel's experiences are his. Solas' experiences are his. It's like two rivers conjoining as one. Two timelines connected. They aren't Fen'harel's experiences and Solas'. They become Solas' experiences. If you can't separate the god from the elf, then they are one and the same. Solas is Fen'harel.

He disapproves because you - the only person with the mark - possibly the most important asset to the Inquisition and dealing with Corypheus is - without ANY thought - going to kill themselves.  He disapproves with a hated Inquisitor as well.  You are making a rash decision based on emotions without thinking.  When you ask 'we need to figure out what he wants' he approves because that's correct. If you need to kill yourself AFTER you find out more about him, he would likely approve.

I think his disapproval there was because you were the only who could close the rifts and were likely the only one who would be able to stop Corypheus. So sacrificing yourself just so other people could get away seemed like a bad choice. I think if he had his way he would have sacrificed everyone in Haven if it meant saving the Inquisitor and made it more likely to defeat Cory and recover the orb.
