Is this a cryptic clue patrick

"I had several nonsencial lines this week, but "Okami meets Witch Toucher" is the one that actually broke @BioMaryKirby #nocontext"

> Okami, meaning "great god", "great spirit" or "wolf" - tells the story of how the land was saved from darkness by the Shinto Sun Goddess who took the form of a white wolf.

>Witch Toucher, a game where the player assumes the role of a junior high school student who is asked by an angel to locate a witch that has sneaked into his school. In order to find this witch, he must search the suspect's bodies for a "witch mark".

OVER-ANALYSE ALL THE THINGS

Oh yeah, I saw the tweet and immediately thought of Okami the game. It's been a while since I played it, but I think I can basically sum up the game, which is loosely based on the Shinto tale.

Okami Amaterasu - a Celestial-Brush goddess, who takes the form of a white wolf - lives peacefully in the Celestial Plain (basically a realm of gods and spirits) until such a time Orochi attacks (an eight-headed demon). There is a prophecy that the only person who can actually kill Orochi won't be born until some point in the future, so Amaterasu ends up pulling Orochi out into the mortal realm, as a way to sort of seal him away from her home.

As a result of the battle (I think?), Amaterasu then goes into a 100-year slumber. When she awakes, she sets out on a quest to find the chosen one who will kill Orochi. Along the way there are lots of quests to help local people and she also finds/releases several other Celestial-Brush gods who had been hiding. (They provide help for the main quest, usually in the form of providing a new brush technique).

Eventually Amaterasu finds the chosen one, and they fight the demon together but the cool thing is, this is not actually the end of the game. There is another demon in play, and still a bit of work to purge remaining evil spirits (after-effects of Orochi's influence) from the mortal realm before Okami Amaterasu can return to the Celestial Plain.

So, some more stuff to over-analyse... ;)

[edit: sorry just saw you actually linked the Okami game page on Wikipedia, which probably has a better plot summary. whoops]

I feel these comments are deserving of recognition, and I have not the likes to give them that. Probably should have stayed offline, but I couldn't resist XD

You know, in reference to some Lavellan's being older and not crying her eyes out over him, I don't think it matters how old or mature you are, more like how you are personality-wise and how you as an individual handles heartbreak.  Some of us are still little emotional balls even as we get older and more "mature" :3  I'll probably still be a crybaby in my 90s lol!

*LIKE*

Can we skip the Solas talk and serious gameplay questions for a while? There's some really funny people here at the moment.

Don't make me put you back on list, assman. You're already on thin ice for not recognizing the Princess Bride.

Do you relate to your Lavellan? I mean, do you play your Lavellan as yourself, based on the same ideas, morals, thoughts etc. or do you make up somebody completely unrelated to yourself? In case it's a different character, why do you build her exactly the way you do?

I find that fascinating because mine usually is me. My decisions, my thoughts, my "back story". (Well, I share Avejajed's approach to back stories, actually.)

Man, I played Pac-Man as myself when I was little lol. Pretending I was in the video games was always my thing, I was quick to jump on that in the Dragon Age series. If I could do it with characters like Sly Cooper and Jak from Jak and Daxter, it's only natural I'd do the same in a game where I could atcually make them look and act like me XD

I find that fascinating because mine usually is me. My decisions, my thoughts, my "back story". (Well, I share Avejajed's approach to back stories, actually.)

I actually challenge myself, to discover WHO the character is.  As if, in playing through the story I'm meeting them and getting to know them.  That, despite the fact I'm the one who made them.  I may start with a general notion going into a new RPG and fashioning a new character -- like, "I really want to play someone who's angry at the whole world, who's just plain ticked off because of some event when they were still little" -- but if the story itself progresses in some way that contradicts my original premise, I'm good at going with the new flow.

In DA2, for instance, I loved snarky Hawke.  Fun as heck to play, with loads of laughs and lol's.  But in the end, I just KNEW that my Hawke was more bitter than laughing, more angry than funny, and I was okay "getting to know" aggressive Hawke.  The first time I played that personality all the way through the game, I was absolutely convinced that was really, really HAWKE.

So all of my characters are their own selves, rather.  I'm good at challenging myself when it comes to gender, looks, age, etc.  Personality is defined by the course of the story, and I've played plenty of good guys (lots and lots of paladins, mind you), some really sad girls, a couple of true baddies that I trashed once the game was over (like tossed the character sheet in the actual trash, I mean), one really darkside guy in Star Wars who was badly abused growing up, some really, really funny characters, including a pixie rogue, once, who enjoyed playing pranks on everyone else in the adventuring party ... and on and on.  To me, half the fun in a good role-playing game is discovering and shaping the characters, until they really do seem to come to life. Somewhere along the way I usually fall over myself loving them, enough I can sit here and remember my best, my faves, and even the ones I wished I'd never created, hehe.

Inquisition is really awesome, though.  Of all the Dragon Age games, it's the one that seems to encourage me to think outside the normal habit I have of making a "canon".  That is, once I decide on a particular canon, I almost invariably play that particular take on the story and character over and over and over again, until it's nearly impossible for me to go back and change it up.  So my Warden is always a diplomatic Cousland rogue who marries Alistair and my Hawke is always an aggressive mage who falls in love with Fenris.  But I've been comfortable as heck playing different Inquisitors, different genders and romances and even story-specific choices.  It's been a lot of fun.

(my "canon" Qwizzy belongs to Solas, though)

Thought I'd share my Fanfiction that I'm currently working on. It's about Solas' journey to becoming comfortable with the Fade, and the spirits he meets along with way. As much as I love Solas with the Inquisitor, I had peek into the world of his love lying elsewhere. A lot of drama on the way in this Fanfiction, and a lot of love as well! Hope someone gets some enjoyment out of it, and if so (or if you see something you really dislike) please leave a review! :D

I self insert to some extent, but I try to let my characters take on somewhat of a life of their own. Otherwise, I feel like in multiple playthroughs I'd always find myself picking the same choices, rather than having a character with a different perspective than my own that comes to a different conclusion than I personally might have.

Well said :)

I feel like my playstyle is similar to yours. I have a general idea of what type of character perspective I want to try, and then I just go with the flow and discover how that story turns out. I very rarely pre-plan what choices a character will make.

The story about Fen'Harel and the tree's been really bothering me.

"In the story, Fen'Harel was captured by the hunting goddess, Andruil. He had angered her by hunting the halla without her blessing, and she tied him to a tree and declared that he would have to serve in her bed for a year and a day to pay her back. But as she made camp that night, the dark god Anaris found them, and Anaris swore that he would kill Fen'Harel for crimes against the Forgotten Ones. Andruil and Anaris decided that they would duel for the right to claim Fen'Harel.

He called out to Anaris during the fight and told him of a flaw in Andruil's armor just above the hip, and Anaris stabbed Andruil in the side, and she fell. Then Fen'Harel told Anaris that he owed the Dread Wolf for the victory and ought to get his freedom. Anaris was so affronted by Fen'Harel's audacity that he turned and shouted insults at the prisoner, and so he did not see Andruil, injured but alive, rise behind him and attack with her great bow. Anaris fell with a golden arrow in his back, badly injured, and while both gods slumbered to heal their wounds, Fen'Harel chewed through his ropes and escaped."

--Felassan, to Briala

http://dragonage.wik.../wiki/Fen'Harel

This is the only story we have where one of the Forgotten Ones are not only named, but to some extent fleshed out, likely because it's told by an ancient elf. And just like Fen'Harel, Anaris is very different from how the Dalish portray the Forgotten Ones.

In legends they're just these malevolent shadows of the Void fighting against the Creators, because they're evil and the Creators are not. And yet, their roles are switched in Felassan's tale. We have Fen'Harel portrayed as a disobedient wastrel who hunts halla without permission, and Andruil has this rapist vibe going on with her forcing Fen'Harel to serve in her bed as punishment. And then we have Anaris, who's hunting Fen'Harel down for justice. Or maybe vengeance. After DA2 we all know how there's a thin line between the two. But if the Forgotten Ones are nothing but pure evil, then how come Anaris agrees to a duel with Andruil? Granted the duel didn't play out all honorably, with Fen'Harel pointing out weak spots and Anaris making use of it. Still, it's a duel nonetheless, an honorable gesture, when he could have just sliced Fen'Harel's throat and run.

Aside from that, Dalish legends have always said that Fen'Harel's buddy buddy with the Forgotten Ones. And yet in this story, which is probably much closer to the truth, Fen'Harel's their enemy. What if this is just another instance of Dalish legend being wrong, and Fen'Harel was never friends with the Forgotten Ones? He doesn't have to be friends with them to manipulate them into a position where he can seal them after all.

I don't know if you could say he was their enemy, since both Andruil and Anaris are accusing Fen'Harel of crimes here.  The story just kinda underlines that he plays each side against the other, and always finds a way to wiggle his way out.  We can assume that he didn't have a complete falling out with the Creators despite his dispute with Andruil, and possibly it's the same with Anaris and the Forgotten Ones.  Conflict between the gods, even within the same pantheon was common, from what we've learned so far.

But I agree that the Forgotten Ones are probably a lot more complex than "evil" gods.

So, a weird thing happened to me a few minutes ago. I made a new game and recreated my Lavellan and I'm now running around the Hinterlands doing quests. I don't know if this is normal, but Solas caught fire and managed to stay that way for quite sometime, the fire never going away. (Doesn't it usually go away after a few seconds/minutes?)

And he looks pretty terrifying...

Spoiler

Spoiler

The funny thing is, even though his life is being depleted slowly, he's not crying out in pain like he usually does when this happens. I got a little worried that he would stay that way forever, so I experimented using his Dispel spell to remove it. I was so relieved that it worked.

So there, that's my Solas story for today. *bows* :P

If it was just a feud though, Anaris would have been content with punishing Fen'Harel the way Andruil wants to. Instead, Anaris wants to kill him, and Fen'Harel knows. I don't see how they can be friends with that and Fen'Harel's crimes (they must have been serious to get that reaction) hanging between them.

We don't know what happened before this, and we don't know what happened after this.  We have so little info on the Forgotten Ones.  I imagine Fen'Harel likely had his origins with the Creators side, and gradually gained the trust of the Forgotten Ones.  Some people make Loghain a Grey Warden, things happen.  If it turns out Fen'harel was originally associated with Dirthamen, he may have been something like a spy who eventually became a double agent.  Then ended up betraying both the Creators and the Forgotten Ones.

Yeah, we really can't confirm anything right now . I'm just wondering about the possibilities of Fen'Harel not really being friends with the Forgotten Ones. That would change a lot of my personal theories.

It may have been similar to his relationship with the Creators pantheon.  Maybe he had a few friends among them, while disliking others.  I get the feeling he wasn't entirely buddy buddy either way.  I think it's going to be the usual greys with the two pantheons.  The Creators may use "clean" magic, but had a very controlling society almost similar to the Qunari.  While the Forgotten Ones wanted freedom, but used "dark" magic that was very destructive, like the Blight.  Solas doesn't view power as good or evil, just as a tool.  But maybe he eventually decided they were all going too far, and believed locking them away was the only solution.  Ultimately, Solas' motivations appear to be focused on helping common people, and not so much his loyalties to his fellow gods.  Although I think it's likely Mythal's death contributed to his actions, maybe that was his "Celene burns Halamshiral" moment, when he lost faith in his fellow gods to do what was right.

I have thought before, that if Solas was close to the Forgotten Ones in some way, that probably indicated that there was more to them than simply "evil" gods.  Especially with the hints that the Forgotten Ones were another faction of elves, rather than just some nameless horrors.  Even Archdemon souls can be "cleaned" via the Dark Ritual, which suggests they are not inherently corrupt, if we assume the Old Gods were originally the Forgotten Ones.

It's important not to take this story too much in isolation.  Felassan is Briala's teacher (in fact, the da'len and hahren thing that some fans tend to give Solas and Lavellan is actually from their relationship) and he tells her nothing without reason.  This story is how she comes up with the idea of fighting for elven freedom by using the civil war.
