The story about Fen'Harel and the tree's been really bothering me.

http://dragonage.wik.../wiki/Fen'Harel

This is the only story we have where one of the Forgotten Ones are not only named, but to some extent fleshed out, likely because it's told by an ancient elf. And just like Fen'Harel, Anaris is very different from how the Dalish portray the Forgotten Ones.

In legends they're just these malevolent shadows of the Void fighting against the Creators, because they're evil and the Creators are not. And yet, their roles are switched in Felassan's tale. We have Fen'Harel portrayed as a disobedient wastrel who hunts halla without permission, and Andruil has this rapist vibe going on with her forcing Fen'Harel to serve in her bed as punishment. And then we have Anaris, who's hunting Fen'Harel down for justice. Or maybe vengeance. After DA2 we all know how there's a thin line between the two. But if the Forgotten Ones are nothing but pure evil, then how come Anaris agrees to a duel with Andruil? Granted the duel didn't play out all honorably, with Fen'Harel pointing out weak spots and Anaris making use of it. Still, it's a duel nonetheless, an honorable gesture, when he could have just sliced Fen'Harel's throat and run.

Aside from that, Dalish legends have always said that Fen'Harel's buddy buddy with the Forgotten Ones. And yet in this story, which is probably much closer to the truth, Fen'Harel's their enemy. What if this is just another instance of Dalish legend being wrong, and Fen'Harel was never friends with the Forgotten Ones? He doesn't have to be friends with them to manipulate them into a position where he can seal them after all.

I'm more disturbed by the "serve her in bed for a year and a day bit..." So Andy has her wicked way with him for at least a while before Ana turns up... Hmmm further inspiration for FF.

Do you relate to your Lavellan? I mean, do you play your Lavellan as yourself, based on the same ideas, morals, thoughts etc. or do you make up somebody completely unrelated to yourself? In case it's a different character, why do you build her exactly the way you do?

I find that fascinating because mine usually is me. My decisions, my thoughts, my "back story". (Well, I share Avejajed's approach to back stories, actually.)

Oh, sorry, I thought it were half past 40cl already. My bad.

I usually always make my characters like me but honestly.. this time when I made lavellan I couldn't make her like ME I mean.. she has my blue eyes and she is behaving as I would and she has hair color that I am going to get myself (in the future) but I didn't want her to LOOK like me.. heh.. as my shepard looked almost exactly like me:

That story is a fable, it's even stated as such. People tend to take it literally for some reason, love of angst maybe.

I've only seen a few photos of you but quite frankly, I think your previous Lavellan looked a lot more like you than your Shepard.

I keep needing to see what others on the thread think about some of the stuff that confuses me....

I was recently replaying DAII and Merrill was talking about ancient elves doing Uthenera on Sundermount, but then she implied that they were all dead. I never really thought much about that before, but playing it now makes me wonder WHY they are all dead. If these are ancient elves who are asleep in the Fade, then why assume they are all dead? Isn't it possible for them to still be alive? If they are dead, how did they die? I thought the elves back then could sleep forever or even just live forever, although the human exposure ruined that. But, being asleep should protect them. I even read something about dead elves doing Uthenera somewhere else, too. (Eww... this makes me realize they sleep in coffins when they do Uthenera. Vampires, much?)

I'm just thinking, what gives? Can't we find any Uthenera elves who are not dead, beside Abelas and crew? Maybe they do exist elsewhere and that was what Solas was referring to when he told Abelas "your people yet linger." He's not talking about normal elves as we know them because Abelas is well aware of them--SHEMS!!

"Get off my lawn, you shems!" Old man Abelas is very territorial, lol.  ^_^

I believe it is said that some slaves killed those in Uthenera, I can't remember the source though. Damnit!

Hey y'all. So I'm thinking about braving the Solasmance on my next playthrough, and I'm wondering what class I should be. I'm thinking either warrior or mage, I've already been an archer Lavellan. Now I'm kind of leaning towards warrior because I like the notion of being this tiny waifish elven woman wielding a huge 2H sword or axe that is almost bigger than she is, but I also wonder if being a mage gives extra interesting Solas stuff, being a Keeper's First and all. I've already been a rift mage and a KE on other characters though, so I know some of what he says about that, but I wonder if there's anything romance or flirt related that might pop up.

By the way, every time I see this thread title go by in the forum I can't resist from going "aroooo!" out loud... Fortunately I'm usually in the privacy of my own home when this happens. XD

Wow. Remind me never to do Uthenera! Can't really trust you'll ever wake up.  :o

I've never heard of this before. Where, by chance, did you hear about it? In one of the games, perhaps?

Thanks! I've yet to read that book. But, I would hope not ALL of them have been slain in their sleep. Surely, there's more, if the existence of Babelas is anything to go by.  B)

It's really not that different, it changes some lines in early flirts but I think they're all cute. It's up to you, a mage can be interesting to roleplay since your keeper taught you to fear the Dread Wolf and protect your clan form him. But Solas falling for a non-mage Lavellan who shouldn't have any ties with the fade is romantic too: a "god" falling in love with a normal girl :)

I play as a mage because I like the idea of them nerding out on fade stuff, but in the game it doesn't make much of a difference.

It's important not to take this story too much in isolation.  Felassan is Briala's teacher (in fact, the da'len and hahren thing that some fans tend to give Solas and Lavellan is actually from their relationship) and he tells her nothing without reason.  This story is how she comes up with the idea of fighting for elven freedom by using the civil war.

He may have told it to inspire Briala, but that doesn't make the story any less likely true than Dalish legends

I'm more disturbed by the "serve her in bed for a year and a day bit..." So Andy has her wicked way with him for at least a while before Ana turns up... Hmmm further inspiration for FF.

I don't think she's done anything aside from tie him up by the time Anaris arrives. And I've seen a few mentions in fanfic, but it's used mostly as a way to make the reader dislike Andruil instead of turning them on, thankfully.

It doesn't make it any less of an actual Dalish legend, that's true.  But Felassan may have told it in a way that related to Briala.

I'm a fan of non-mage Lavellan, for reasons I can't say because spoilers. But what class you pick doesn't really matter really. One of his flirts changes depending on your class, and a rift mage gets an additional option in his quest, but they don't really change the romance much beyond your personal headcanons. You get the additional options even when you're not romancing him after all.

Edit: And yep, the thread title's awesome

Honestly I kind of hate playing melee classes in this game.  Yes!  Let's go chase down that despair demon, ooh it flitted away, I'll just yank it to me with this handy warrior ability ... ooh it flew away again, let's go chase it down!  And there it goes again ... sod it, everyone else go kill that damn thing, I'm going to harvest this elfroot.

That warrior ability to yank things to you is pretty handy ... except when it doesn't work on wraiths or anything too large or certain boss mobs or another mob runs in front of your target and gets yanked instead or it's on cool down.

So I kind of find mage less frustrating to play.  But then, I'm lazy.

Oh those Despair demons are awful! Really the only way to get them is with ranged characters. Now if only our own ranged party members would do as awesome a job of staying at range....

Ok then . I just like the headcanon that one of the reasons why Solas leaves at the end is because he wants to restore all elves's, particularly Lavellan's, immortality and magic. Not because he would prefer it if Lavellan was a mage, but because she and all elves deserve more.

okay sorry to throw off the thread but something amazing just happened and I have to tell you all (okay amazing is probs not the right word but WHATEVER it's Friday and I'm full of beer)

so I'm watching old Star Trek: TNG, like super old, and of course young(er) Patrick Stewart was rockin' that sexy bald head AS HE IS WONT TO DO and I was thinking of Solas and I'm like, yeah, Sir Patrick looks great, I mean, he's got that kickass jawline, but he's still a tad too old to be Solas BUT THEN I was struck with the memory of Tom Hardy's turn as PICARD'S YOUNG CLONE in Star Trek: Nemesis and I swear you guys birds started singing and BEHOOOOLD my canon Solas:

Spoiler

Spoiler

Spoiler

Spoiler

Spoiler

and yes I absolutely pulled out my copy of the movie and made these screencaps just for you guys, I just couldn't contain my excitement. He's even got the right color eyes and the cleft chin! AND THE LIPS.

Solas reminds me of the Technomage Galen from Crusade. His appearance is not as close but he's good at the whole being mysterious and cryptic thing.

Lore and story wise there's more with a Mage. Not just with solas. I recommend it at least on one playthrough. The romance is the same either way though. For my own personal head canon I prefer a non Mage with solas. Just the way I built my character and her background.
